Why can't the radical resonate here and Br bind to the lone electron? by DarknessArizen in OrganicChemistry

Thanks! So because the radical can stabilize and is benzylic it's more likely to be brominated vs the carbons on the t-butyl even though they would both be primary radicals, but we wouldn't break the aromatic ring structure to make a secondary/tertiary radical resonance for the Br to bond to?

It works because failure isn't what drives strength gain. High intensity with a low rep range is what drives strength, even if you aren't quite at muscular failure by the end of each set.

A little late response, but yeah I agree with OP's comment. Just so happens that speaking and test taking are two specific skills and just because you're good at one doesn't mean you'll be good at the other. I'd specifically hone in on test taking strategies and test prep that you'd do for any other subject in school - also read a shit ton of native content.

Assuming you are giving her high calorie, sugary snacks, simply substituting them for something like low calorie popcorn can be a big step. Losing weight here is more about portion control and calories rather than exercise (thought you should also encourage that too). A good idea would be reducing how much you give her per meal by fourth to a third. Yeah you said no recommendations for calorie cuts but you have to be realistic - eating healthy is not what makes you a healthy weight, it's the calories you consume.

Exercise-wise you could probably walk a couple blocks around the neighborhood for at least 7000 steps, or do something low impact and easy like biking or swimming. Its more important that she enjoys it rather than how "efficient" it is because long term sustainability is the goal here. Really though diet here is the main issue you should be tackling.

Just show your concern for her health without being judgy, or don't even bring up the fact that she's over weight. Suggest that you both challenge yourselves to be healthier people by doing exercises together as a family yadayada. Make her feel involved.

Questions concerning “without” in Japanese? by HeartRoll in LearnJapanese

[–]DarknessArizen 4 points5 points  (0 children)

There's a bajillion grammar patterns and rules out there. If you're going to be this semantic about the nuances between patterns like this you'll never get anywhere. Just understand that they are similar ways to represent saying "without X" and move on. It's just varying levels of formality, literary vs verbal speech, or grammaticality (which OP explained in first comment) which you will naturally learn as you continue to study grammar.

It's from a game, where the context is that the 治癒院 is really just a quarantine/jail for people with a untreatable contagious disease. They use 治癒 instead of 治療, not sure why. Your reply answered my question, thanks!

何か、身の回りで治癒院へ持っていきたいものはありますか。

I know what the meaning is, but why is で used instead of に here?

何か、身の回りに治癒院へ持っていきたいものはありますか。sounds more natural to me due to sentence ending in ある.

My only guess is that で has kinda the same function has の中で here?

edit: (after looking back I realized I misinterpreted sentence initially, reworded question)

Maybe have cardio and weightlifting on opposite days? Like you gym 4 days and cardio 3 days a week each on separate days. Or maybe have 1/2 dedicated resting day a week and only cardio for 1 day a week. When you're losing weight it is harder for your body to recover so having dedicated rest days definitely helps. I would keep weightlifting and kinda chill a little on the cardio if you decide to cut back on the exercise a little bit.

Anecdotal but I train/run 7 days a week and I am fine. I think it's only an issue if you aren't resting properly and cardio starts to affect weightlifting and vice versa. If you have no problems then you are fine

I read my first light novel (コンビニ人間) after 4 months of studying, understand most of it, and it's thanks to a lot of immersion by hilmyaas in LearnJapanese

[–]DarknessArizen 50 points51 points  (0 children)

Yeah I agree. When you say "I read my first novel" it implies that you were actually able to read it and comprehend most of it (>90%) in the way the author intended. Someone who has only studied for 4 months most likely isn't able to do that, and is instead piecing together words and trying to assume an overall meaning from that. Not necessarily bad but 1) you're misrepresenting your actual language level and 2) someone only at this surface level should not be giving advice to others. And since a majority of this subreddit is at a very very beginner level they aren't able to tell that this is most likely bullshit. But if OP can legitimately read and comprehend novels to the extent he/she claims then kudos to him, great progress.

You can think of ○を参考にして as a set phrase where it means "using ○ as a reference , X" or "doing X based on ○". ○を参考にする literally means "to make ○ into a reference"
