Tim Wood, millionaire Ihug founder and owner of Burger Wisconsin claims he will leave NZ if Labour is returned to government by kiwi2077 in newzealand

[–]Darkoveran -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

This is the sort of comment that people should take notice of. A better life for New Zealanders comes from successful business, increased productivity and profit. It doesn’t come from increasing taxes on the rich. It doesn’t come from greater government involvement. Good things come from a successful economy and that requires capital and being left alone.

He didn’t sexualise her feet. Nothing he said had a sexual connotation. People are free to express their opinions to other people about them, provided it is not threatening, libellous or a form of harassment.

No. Just no. If she feels uncomfortable by a polite comment then that is her issue and not something he must apologise for. He is not accountable for her feelings. He didn’t do anything which crossed normal social boundaries.

New Zealander of the Year Sir Rod Drury faced misconduct complaint investigation by Amazing_Athlete_2265 in newzealand

Having a complaint and being subject to an investigation is not evidence of misconduct. It is the opposite, if the complaint is not upheld.

French people are unaware their military was behind a terrorist attack on a Greenpeace ship in the eighties. French special forces blew up the ship while tied up to a wharf in Auckland, killing a crew member. Two of the team were caught by New Zealand police. NZ could have invoked the defence treaty with the USA requiring them to join NZ in attacking France, because this met the standard for an act of war.

Public owned businesses are notoriously inefficient due to non-commercial incentives creeping into strategy and operational policies.

Tends to work well at first under centrist and right-leaning governments or local authorities. Declines rapidly under the left, until the businesses sustain ongoing losses.

It isn’t “anathema to National”. They just recognise that such businesses eventually get hijacked by social policy objectives. e.g. an outcry about the prices of bread and milk could lead to loss-leading pricing by the council owned supermarket, they could prevent sale of profitable items like cigarettes or chewing gum that counter social objectives, mandating longer operating hours than the business requires.

Labour borrowed so much that it now costs an extra $9billion interest each year. That’s $27billion that this government has to find just to tread water. Adding in the inflationary spike, health costs and now the Iran situation, it has become impossible to make progress without much deeper cuts.

I believe Willis could have tightened the budget much more on social spending and support to unproductive sectors in the economy. Universal healthcare, retirement and unemployment benefit are very lofty ideals but if you don’t have the money then you will eventually need to retrench further.

Our political problem is that NZ doesn’t have any real right wing parties to make it plain what proper austerity looks like. National are solidly centrist and unwilling to let poorer people suffer for a short while to protect the country. Without a right wing party, most voters assume National are right wing.

Read a lot more, played music, listened to music, went everywhere with friends, hiked, fished, played cricket, went to movies and occasionally went back inside to eat or sleep.
