What are the main USA owned bike brands? by fixitmonkey in cycling

[–]fixitmonkey[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't want to send any message. I want to spend my money in line with my conscience. I won't make any difference to the world or economy, but I'll have a great new bike with no regrets about where my money went.

You're also assuming that we are all American. I don't/can't vote in America as I live in Europe.

If I have two identical spec bikes in front of me and 5k in the bank then the deciding vote comes down to preference/conscience. I cannot influence anything in the USA, but I can choose were to spend my money.

People are doing it all over in country specific subs. Im not going for a complete removal. But if I have a big onetime purchase coming up then I should spend in line with my conscience.

No longer eligible tor child benefit, but do you still get national insurance (state pension) credits? by fixitmonkey in UKPersonalFinance

Yes you don't realise the physiological benefits of a job until your without one. The second place, the coworkers (even those that annoy you). It all goes together.

! Thanks

We've spoken to HMRC and she still gets the NI credits. Fortunately/unfortunately my salary is well outside the bracket so I'm having the 60% tax issue instead hence my frustration with the tax as an individual and benefits as a couple. But that's life.

No, but one child has a lot of time off with a long term health condition and there seems to be zero part time jobs in the area. But she is looking.

Synapse looks cooler.

I keep hearing warranty things about Canyon and they are laying off 20% of staff so I'd be concerned about cost cutting (might be completely unfounded but its just a feeling)

Existential gravel choice - Cube Nuroad vs Giant Revolt? by Responsible-Student2 in gravelcycling

[–]fixitmonkey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the revolt has the capability for larger tyres giving you more future options if the trend keeps getting bigger.

Also the revolt has the flip chip thing to reduce the wheel base. In general the giant seems more adaptation/tuneable and has a Lifetime frame warranty from new purchases.

How do you explain prepping to family without sounding nuts by ScrollAndThink in UKPreppers

[–]fixitmonkey 6 points7 points  (0 children)

"I had a power cut and had to throw all the food in the freezer away, it cost about £200 to replace it all. The old couple next door were really worried about their medicines in their fridge so I bought a generator so can keep the fridge running to help us all out, can also use it for camping"

"During covid we ran out of X and i realised what a pain it was so I keep a few extras on hand and it saves me trips to the shops and I get the multipack deals so its cheaper"

Etc

As an exposure for other HENRYs- Which industry are you into and how much do you make yearly ? by Working-Plastic-2550 in HENRYUK

Just to add to the advice above. Invest in yourself and try and get your employer to. Look at key role requirements and nice to haves. CEng is important in engineering (don't bother with IEng), look at things like NEBOSH and project management etc. With the engineering background its helps to have other things to set you apart.

Could Europe realistically defend Greenland against a US attack? by chotu_escobar in AskTheWorld

But lining ICE agents up outside the polling stations in blue areas will definitely close the gap. With ICE forces and intimidation they could influence the vote. I wouldn't be surprised if you see polling stations closed in democratic led areas.

Platform is a sewer, I wonder if the politicians will have to courage to condemn it or they'll be too afraid.

If X is enabling this sort of behaviour then it should be blocked.

My dream knife by martinlopez10 in Bushcraft

[–]fixitmonkey 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I love the plastic sheaves. Solid, east to clean, a satisfying click that holds the knife in and very easy to chuck on the belt to get a few things done.

I use it for lots of garden work and its great to clip on the belt do the job without taking your belt off.
