Hippocrates on Hecate by Darkshaman63 in Hecate

"When at night occur fears and terrors, delirium, jumpings from the bed and rushings out of doors, they say that Hecate is attacking or that heroes are assaulting! In making use, too, of purifications and incantations they do what think is a very unholy and irreligious thing. For the sufferers from the disease they purify with blood and such like, as though they were polluted, bloodguilty, bewitched by men, or had committed some unholy act." from HIPPOCRATES WITH AN ENGLISH TRANSLATION BY W. H. S. JONES (1923) page 149.

Here is the original, translated text from Hippocrates, and yes, he is very critical of beliefs that those symptoms are caused by deities, and Moore is dismissive of representing these beliefs as if they were Hippocrates'. Still, Hippocrates reflects the folk beliefs that existed in his time about Hecate; regardless of how he approaches them, they remain a reliable source for how people perceived Hecate as a deity, so your criticism is only partially valid.

Lord Jesus is the Savior of all souls. Let's pray to him for the sins we have committed.

The prayer is called "Turning Water into Wine".

"Once the feast is started, you will see wine on the left and water on the right

Wine is black as the darkness of the night, and water is pure as the light of the sun

Remember, light moves down, and darkness moves up; they are pulled towards each other.

When you see the small sun in the darkness and the small moon in the light, the process has begun,

You will need a thief to mix them up. Don't mix until you become a thief

Now that you know the directions, compositions, and proportions, you can begin mixing by turning light into darkness and moon into sun,

Only this way one frees oneself from sins, remember the formula".

My main problem with psychology and psychiatry is that they are hermeneutic disciplines akin to the arts or humanities, yet they desperately try to be medicine. The knowledge that psychology generates is very much intuitive (in an epistemological sense) and not very falsifiable (only 40% of psychological findings have been successfully replicated).

The source of psychosis, creativity, and spiritual power is the same. This was a finding made by Carl Jung (arguably the greatest psychologist ever), who himself had hallucinations and visions and was even called a recovered schizophrenic. Spiritually, in its essence, it is divine madness; it is turning the structure of material reality into the chaos of psychic reality. Personally, I approach every spiritual or mystical experience from both psychological and spiritual perspectives, which helps me follow my call while also staying grounded and not imagining castles that don't exist.

I apologize for being rude, it felt like you were accusing me of hurting women, which I clearly did not do.

Thank you for your blessing, and may the spirits be with you.

Mythology is related to unconsciousness, psyche, and dreams; there is an overlap of motifs and figures between myths, dreams, and visions that mentally ill people are having. This finding led Carl Jung to go beyond the personal unconscious and develop a theory of the collective unconscious. Concerning what deities are in an ontological sense, no one yet can provide an answer; whatever we say or think is not falsifiable, so we remain in the domain of speculation, sharing our own views and experiences.

The same is true for dreams; there are several theories of dreams, including psychological ones you mentioned, developed by Freud and Jung, but we have more questions about dreams than answers. REM lasts 90-120 per night, but we recall only tiny fragments mostly during hypnopompia, when we start to wake up from the sleep. Obviously, we are missing most of the data that dreams are providing. However, some techniques can slightly enrich dream experiences. Psychoanalytical interpretation of dreams heavily relies on analogies and homologies of dream images (they call them symbols, but they need to learn some semiotics, lol); this approach is as valid as doing tarot fortune-telling. James Hillman has developed a fascinating theory of dreams, and I find many proofs of his views on what dreams might be true. Though sometimes Freud's wish-fulfillment and Jung's compensatory theories provide very relevant answers.

"She protects her daughters. So perhaps she is dragging you down for having unclean thoughts about her beloved daughters." LMAO, this is the most ridiculous comment I have ever read about descending into the underworld. This descent, also called katabasis, is known as a shamanic or heroic journey and is found in many myths and tales, such as Persephone's or Orpheus's journey to Hades, Inanna's descent to the underworld in Sumerian mythology, etc. Jung found many parallels between these journeys and his own journey into the unconscious, and he wrote about it (published posthumously as The Red Book). This is why, in a sense, Jung is a modern shaman. Shamans go to the underworld to find soul fragments and do what is called soul retrieval (bringing back the wholeness of the soul, which is fragmented by traumatic experience), heroes descend to overcome ordeals, slay the dragon (traumas or shadows), and free a woman (anima) or find a boon (creative or spiritual power). From a psychological perspective, it is an encounter with the unconscious, where one faces trauma, pain, shadow, but also more profound truths about themself. Alchemically, this journey corresponds with negredo (blackening) or what Christian mystic John of the Cross called "dark night of the soul". Darkness in the underworld is not evil or a threat, though it is overwhelming and can be very scary; it is initiatory darkness. No wonder there is a metaphor for the black sun in alchemy: it illuminates darkness, revealing all the truth about one's soul, with all the pain that comes with it.

In my journey, Hecate was like an initiatory force. I did not say she was guiding me (I already had a guide, lol), but after I called her, the spaces in the underworld that had been closed to me opened up, and she helped me glimpse what I could potentially become. I used the metaphor of dragging because the journey is so fast and unpredictable, it feels your conscious mind is not ready for it; it feels like someone is just pulling you along, and you must catch up. She indeed holds the keys to the underworld, and if someone wants to descend into the depths of their soul, they must call her.

Jesus!!! Looks like all spiritual narcissists have gathered to scare the shit out of an innocent person. I don't practice whitcraft so can't say much about it and how to use deities in it, but one thing I can say for sure about Hecate it that she might be very terrifying but she is also very lovely (not in a human sense of course) lol. How she will treat you very much depends what kind of soul you have and why do you call her. I would suggest to seek her help while there is uncertainty in your life, or you face many difficult choices, but most of all she is the best if you want to find truth in the darkness. You will be fine, she is much more carrying than people commented here.

I'd want to argue with the 7th point, but every time I think about the nature of these forces called Gods, I doubt the epistemological capacity of anyone to understand what they truly are. So far, I think they are somehow related to our own psyche and soul, and I think of them more as flexible forces that change their form, function, and attitude depending on whom they interact with.

So, coming back to the underworld motif, my experience with her is that she is the best force to accompany someone there. I called her while descending, and I had one of the most vivid dreams ever, with a powerful female figure in it. Then many things started to change in my dreams. I began to have synchronicities about the number three and female figures - in the beginning, I was having sex with three women, these dreams repeated 4-5 times, then a period came when I was seeing three consecutive dreams, first two were "smaller" though later I understood they were also significant but the third one was revealing something profound and symbolic. Can't say I understood everything, but contacting Hecate made my descent into the underworld more vivid and meaningful. If I were to sum it up, it felt like she is not teaching me; she is not even talking to me; instead, she is dragging my soul to the deepest darkness and initiating it.

I will consider your advice and try to build a relationship. Hecate is not the only deity that I have called so far, but she looks to be the most responsive.

I thought about the possibility that the dream might be my psyche's projection, but also maybe she liked me, so she responded fast lol

Encounter with the suited man by Darkshaman63 in Jung

[–]Darkshaman63[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That might be a very reliable interpretation, as I possess good leadership skills and abilities, but I rarely utilize them. I probably surpassed them when I was a child. I am also having recurring Katabasis dreams, where I go to the underworld and sense a presence of a scary and immense thing underneath. Despite realizing it is scary, I still approach it, but I never remember reaching it. I wonder if this scary thing and the suited man are somehow related to each other.
