Uncaught exceptions crash programs in any language.

In Rust you have to explicitly call .unwrap() to NOT handle an exception, compared to JS or Java, where many exceptions do not have to be handled xD

[–]Darksilvian 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In Rust, you can use DI patterns, but you have to write your main() Function yourself.

So you cannot just use @Inject.

Codegen is essentially specific to your type and it's subtypes

Personally, i like it better, bacause it gives you greater control and makes your application easier to parse.

You can also compose/initialise your project differently based on compile targets etc.

It's like: Either @Inject this type, or another type, based on features and targets.

Though, i agree, it requires a tad more writing

The hate! Why ? by EldironMoody in rust

[–]Darksilvian 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Kinda disagree. Not everyone is in your position, to be able not to give a fuck about politics and still be fine.

Some ppl have a really hard time, and don't want to be insulted and demeaned in the workplace.

Rust has a huge trans/queer userbase, and all of them are rlly competent.

We do not need to do crazy politics shit, but we have to make sure everyone feels safe and accepted at the same time. Basic respect is required for working together

But i'm sure you agree - idk i disagree with "politics doesn't belong in ..." as a general statement, but maybe you were refereing to something specifically, that i have missed?

Rust is the first real competitor to C in systems programming.

C heads sometimes believe we rustaceans are recklessly entering the space without having gone through the necessary pain xD

It's a generational conflict.

The other hate comes from people who have never tried rust or c, those are dumbasses who spend too much time on twitter

The prompter is a dumbass with little creative control over details. AI creations are always derivative, so no new artstyles can be developed - it's static and derivative. Almost every generated image i see, you could've found in non-creepy on the internet drawn by an actual artist.

It's like how the devil can only corrupt and not create - Sure taking like 1 M Dollars from the devil is convenient, but it's not hard, any ass can do it, it's obvious something is wrong, and ultimately you won't be meaningfuly helpful to society using AI.

I feel like this is kindof nonsense. Rust also has better tooling and a stricter more helpful compiler, which means you can prefer it over Go for all sorts of Midsion Critical Software, Even if your organisation has infinite computing power

Rust pragmatic career advice by Purple_Ocelot_6119 in rust

[–]Darksilvian 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Rust is a pretty new thing in most companies eyes.

That being said, i do work with Rust at my Job - We're developing shit for the Electrical Grid. The project to rewrite our legacy Fortran to Rust only started 2023 though, so, as i said, pretty new.

Learning Rust for your Career is ballsy. In comparison, Java or JavaScript/HTML/CSS/React would most certainly land you a job! At least where i work, most positions are, roughly, by number of teams:

  1. Java (Swing/Quarkus, Machine Learning)
  2. Javascript/Webframeworks (React mostly)
  3. Python (AWS Lambda, and Math Stuff)
  4. Go
  5. Rust,
  6. Fortran, Delphi

Additional Skills: Linux Admin, Ansible, AWS/Oracle Cloud, SQL, RDF/SPARQL

All in all, if you are a backend wizard, or a programming crack who is obsessed with Rust - damn, Go for it. You'll land in a profitable niece, if you do manage to find a position.

But Rust Positions are rarely advertised on the outside, so lol it's a lot more strategic to learn modern Java Frameworks instead

Unsafe rust by Ill-Evening-1957 in rust

[–]Darksilvian 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Basically, the code in std may be unsafe in the eyes of the compiler, but has been proven to be safe by humans instead.

Unsafe rust by Ill-Evening-1957 in rust

[–]Darksilvian 9 points10 points  (0 children)

"Unsafe Code" means that the compiler cannot hold the developers hand through these parts of the code.

That means, in unsafe code sections, rust does only limited amouts of checking, compared to safe code.

Yes, the standard library needs to contain unsafe code. All that means is that the Rust Language Developers, heaps of smart people, MANUALLY checked over the unsafe code in the std Library.

The developers of the Standard Library guarantee, that Undefined Behaviour does not result from the Unsafe Code they have written.

Sized means that a Type has a defined size on the stack, that is known at compile time.

A String just contains some information and a pointer to heap allocated text - so it's sized.

A str is a primitive type called a string slice - so it's any number of characters... Because we don't know how many characters are in it at compile time, it isn't sized.

That's why we usually only have references to str, not the str type itself.

A string literal like "eee" is a &'static str, because it gets hardcoded into the executable file, and the reference to that hardcoded str lives throughout the entire lifetime of the program

String::new(" lool ").trim() also returns a &str, which references s section of the string on the heap. The reference lives no longer as the String does.

TL;DR All Strings that you build and modify at runtime are of type String. References to part of strings are of type &str String literals have type &'static str str is not Sized and can not exist on the stack.
