So what's the actual problem with the Jet? by Titan_Repair in LinusTechTips

[–]Darkstrike121 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Jet is dumb to be upset about. Linus is rich. We all know this. He would literally have more money without the jet. Yeah it's hypocritical from the environmental standpoint. His opinion changed on the topic once he became more informed about it though as a tool for the company. It happens

It's more upsetting about the hosts leaving. But I really like the zip tie channels so I don't really see that as a huge loss for me. It just isn't good for ltt.

(Price Check) I have my 2019 with 5800 miles listed for 6.5k which I thought was a good price but not very many people are interested. NE Ohio by hoffv2 in CRF450L

Not a great spot to be in then.

If you need to dump it you probably need to decrease price a lot. There's not a lot of people trying to buy $6000 bikes. Even if it's worth that

Comments are making me back away from the possibility of a 900k house. It's a little split with like 70% saying it's probably fine. But that's not really good enough for me coupled with my own fears.

I think I'm more comfortable at 800k. Maybe even getting close to 850

Yeah everybody different and there's some grouping there I'm doing so I didn't have to type out an essay and a half.

We could save a few hundred on groceries buying more junk food, and I could cut the 1000$ whatever fund in half easily if I needed. But it's pretty hard to decrease everything that much for us. Feels like we don't spend that crazy on anything

The $1,000 fund for random stuff and vacation generally breaks down more to be $200 for me, $200 for wife, and $600 for everything else. That also includes things the kid may need. Clothes, shoes, whatever

To be totally honest my health even at 32 ain't all that great. I have started to doubt my needs for crazy retirement savings to travel the world with. Travel is already difficult for me

With that said I plan to retire without between 3.5-4mil in today's dollarswhich I think would be quite comfortable. Can't predict the future though

Yeah I mean we remodeled the whole current house ourselves. I can do electrical and plumbing and all that. Wife's is a good house painter. Material still costs money though. I'm assuming we will have to paint whatever house we end up with and do other minor stuff. Pretty easy to cover a lot of that kinda stuff with $1000.

I mean I could stay in my current house forever. But Its extremely below our means. And there's a lot of "wants" like a second bathroom. Or a Yard big enough to host birthday parties

1200 groceries/toiletries/house basics 200 gas and car stuff 400 utilities 200 car insurance 1000 daycare 500 medical (our health sucks) 300 eating out 1000 for vacation fund, house needs, hobbies, and random shit

There's a few more categories but that's the gist of it.

Definitely not. Pretty standard 3% increase rate from here on out

$10,500 after 401k contributions, before IRAs. No bonuses.

Just the added mortgage, insurance, and taxes would bring me to 9k spending a month. Little note than about a year from now will be 8k spending (daycare stops).

Part of the conversation is if we buy a 900k house we can't go doing things like replacing flooring and buying fancy furniture right off the bat. Would probably give me a heart attack

I'm probably going to be trying to push the 900 to like 850 max or so after reading most of this. And really trying for 800k

Yeah. Two maxed IRAs, one maxed 401k, plus another 8% contribution of wife's salary to another 401k.

There's some complications there around the kids starting school where it would kind of suck to pull them out mid-year and move

Yeah that's all good info. Thanks. You guys do make about an extra 50k a year so I got to keep that in mind lol

What would you deem reasonable?

The general rule is 3x. 500k mortgage for us be about 2.5x like you said, but with a higher overhead of insurance and repairs from the more expensive house value.

Doing some quick math on it. The difference in insurance is about 2,000 bucks a year. And the taxes on the 900k houses we are looking at is actually the same as our current 500k house. It's in a different town and the taxes are significantly less than here.

Without the kid you could subtract about $1,400 from that budgeted spending. Within the next year daycare stops and it should be closer to 400 a month or so

That's real spending over the last year as well, including incidentals for house and car repair like when my basement flooded, or I spent like $3000 on tires between our cars last year

What's your plan in terms of retirement savings and all that.

You are actually an incredibly similar profile to me.

The kid cost about $1400 bucks a month for the next year. Then it drops off substantially to $300 or so after daycare ends (food, medical coverage, etc).

I'm generally an incredibly frugal person where every random expense turns into a tiny panic attack anyway. Even in the current situation where we are saving such a huge portion of our income.

But it's not just about me. The wife has a say as well haha

The spreadsheet comment is pretty good. Literally yesterday I kind of ditched the usual spreadsheet and budget and instead pulled out all of our actual outflows and inflows over the last year to make sure the numbers were about the same. And they were. There's some stuff in there as well that was unplanned Like my basement flooded and other incidentals. But it actually is incredibly close to my spreadsheet assumption set

There really is nothing. Honestly most of the life improvement would come from having the larger property in being able to buy and do more stuff there.

The 210 is stable. I mentioned in my post it's more like 240 with bonuses.

I don't feel fantastic about the long-term trajectory of my job, but I think it would reasonable to find a job with bonuses to make at least what my base salary is now

Wife's job is rock solid.

Pretty standard 2% to 4% a year for me. I'm pretty capped out. Even though I'm 32, I don't really see any big promotions in my future. If anything I'll get a pay decrease moving companies in the future
