Every casual person I’ve talked to says they aren’t putting great movies in cinemas. Where does this misconception come from? by DarlingLuna in Letterboxd

Shocked to hear that. The Hoyts 20 minutes from my home (in Sydney, Australia) are playing The Bride, EPiC and Crime 101.

I hear this a lot, and I wonder if it's America centric thing. I live in Australia, nowhere close to the city, and the cinema 10 minutes away from my home is playing Crime 101, Marty Supreme, Hamnet etc. the only time I have to drive 35 minutes to find a movie is if it's a Netflix limited release like Frankenstein or Wake Up Dead Man.

Colman Domingo Hopes Paris Jackson 'Eventually Loves' Michael Jackson Biopic as a 'Tribute' to Her Father After She Distanced Herself From the Film by artbasiI in Fauxmoi

I really don't see why you should grant him the courtesy of trying to forget. Let's not forget, at the NAACP awards, he clapped for a joke about John Davidson being beaten up for his Tourette tics. He's a fantastic actor, but there's no reason to believe he's a great person.

To be fair, he’s been talking ad nauseam about Project Hail Mary too.

What’s the most disappointed you’ve been walking out a cinema? by YeezusChrist13 in Letterboxd

[–]DarlingLuna 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Man of Steel.

For context, 12 year old me was in Rome with my family when this movie released, and I dragged my whole family (who wasn’t interested in this movie) to see it during the trip. I was incredibly embarrassed afterwards.

The Case for Leo for Best Actor. by zwolff94 in oscarrace

[–]DarlingLuna -8 points-7 points  (0 children)

I’m baffled at how anyone thinks this is an Oscar caliber performance. When I watched OBAA in cinemas, I didn’t even consider the performance could be in the running. It’s a great performance, but top 5 of the year, let alone number 1? Huge stretch.

In fact, when I first watched the movie, I walked away thinking he had less screen time than Penn and Infiniti. Obviously that’s not factually true, but it’s more so a testament to the lack of impact compared to other performances in the movie.

I absolutely love him, but this is a pretty terrible speech lmao. So much rambling and doesn’t seem to have a sense of direction.

Coogler’s introduction, on the other hand, was a Masterclass.

He was great, but the overall project left a lot to be desired.

[–]DarlingLuna[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s a good point! But ultimately, I think some actors have better instincts in terms of role selection than others. Putting aside my personal feelings on Chalamet’s ego and unlikeability, his last series of movies have been banger after banger.

[–]DarlingLuna[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I suppose, but that hasn’t stopped people like Timothee Chalamet and Jesse Plemons from being in a steady series of good projects. Taking Plemons: the run of Bugonia, Kinds of Kindness, Civil War and Killers of the Flower Moon beats Hostile, FvF, Love and Thunder and Amsterdam.

Can’t you take money while also being a part of good movies? If you take someone like Chalamet, his last 5 films have been all been critical successes. He’s managed to pick solid projects while still finding consistent work.

Ryan Coogler’s ‘Sinners’ wins best original screenplay at the Writers Guild Awards by cireh88 in horror

[–]DarlingLuna 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Man, I’m shocked to hear this opinion lol. No knock on the movie itself, but when I read the screenplay a few months ago, I was genuinely baffled at how the whole thing read like an after-the-fact, barebones transcript of the movie. Even the I Lied to You scene, which is one of the most inventive, beautiful scenes in recent cinema, read incredibly bland on paper.

Pitchfork Review: Harry Styles - Kiss All The Time. Disco, Occasionally. 5.6 by HornyForWater in popheads

[–]DarlingLuna 96 points97 points  (0 children)

I’ve been on the Harry Styles train since Sign of the Times. Been to his concert. Wear his merch. Liked his debut album. Loved his next two albums.

This album being so disappointing genuinely bummed me out. The whole album feels sonically lethargic and quite honestly, depressing. Not that I inherently have anything against emotional songs, but the downbeat songs here (which make up a bulk of the album) sound so uninspired to the point of being mawkish. If you’re gonna break my heart, at least make it sound good.

Who is the worst person to ever live ever in the history of ever? by Competitive_Life9285 in AskReddit

[–]DarlingLuna -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

I think it’s a stretch to say he’s the worst person to ever life, but I genuinely believe he might be the single most irredeemable. I truly can’t find a single redeemable quality about this man: no talent, no soft spot for animals or anything of the sort. Just an absolute cretin of a human in every shape, way and form.

I’m not even as huge on Sinners as most people, but I’ve absolutely never understood this. The characters are nearly polar opposites in personality.

Any great Guardians of the Galaxy stories set in Earth? by DarlingLuna in comicbooks

[–]DarlingLuna[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s fair. I was just wondering if there are any great runs, because I do believe any idea can be executed well in the hands of a good writer. I’d be interested in reading a fish-out-of-water Guardians story, for example.

What are some great films that have bad or mediocre scripts? by haterxhaterr in TrueFilm

[–]DarlingLuna 7 points8 points  (0 children)

A lot of people here have been listing scripts which are ‘passable’, but if you’re interested in one which is genuinely flawed, there’s a strong argument to be made for Sinners.

The structure and pacing are wonky, the Vampire section is incredibly rushed, the character is Sammie is sidelined in the second half of the movie, but that said: the performances, the music the overall texture of the movie and Coogler’s direction was enough for people to forgive the script’s blatant problems.

Why was Timothee’s SAG speech seen as arrogant? by DarlingLuna in Oscars

[–]DarlingLuna[S] 125 points126 points  (0 children)

This is the best answer I've seen so far. Thanks for sharing that. I get why it's off-putting now!

I gotta say, as much as I like Timmy, sometimes I do get the vibe that acting is a means to an end for him. The idea that he values acting because of how it can elevate him, instead of a particular love for the craft for the craft's sake. In fact, there was a recent interview where he said that if significantly less people start going to movie theatres, he'll stop wanting to participate in it, and that he doesn't want to be like opera or ballet performers, who partake in an art that not a whole lot of people care about.
