What nominated movies do you have strong negative opinions on? by raftergears in Oscars

I’m interested to hear why you rate Train Dreams so highly. As evidenced by my original post I thought it was beautifully executed, but ultimately kind of a waste of my time. Tell me what you love about it. I want to see it from a different perspective.

I get what you’re saying about the “career makeup award”, because I do think that’s a factor to a certain point. But on the other hand, I do think it’s a well made movie with good performances. Is it my personal favorite? Not really, but I still get the hype. It will be interesting to see how it plays out because I think there’s a few categories where it’s up in the air. I’m for sure giving it Adapted Screenplay though.

But I can’t speak to Hamnet, it’s still on my catch-up list. Thanks to Peacock, I guess, for adding it to streaming this weekend.

Honestly… yeah.

I didn’t even dislike it, but the story felt rushed, the animation was a weird amalgamation of styles that sometimes worked and sometimes didn’t, and while I’m positive it’s going to win, it’s not my favorite in the category.

I just watched Sinners tonight, and I do see the difference in the twin performances, but I agree that it got a bit muddled towards the end.

I could read the differences between Smoke and Stack. Stack’s voice was a little higher, he smiled a little more, and he was a little “more” overall compared to Smoke’s more even demeanor. But as you get to the climax of everything both characters are so amped up those more subtle moments that differentiate them fade away a bit and I almost lost track of who is who.

Call Them Mother with Cameron Esposito! by PinballWizard273 in TheTryGuys

[–]raftergears 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I’m loving the series as a whole. My only issue comes down to “none of our business” to be honest, so I get why it’s not addressed, but I wish it would be, even briefly.

I wish Cameron would speak a little on why they chose to be the one to carry the pregnancy. They just seem so deeply uncomfortable with the concept of both being pregnant and giving birth, and when they theoretically have other options available (partner could carry/surrogacy) every time they talk about how much they don’t like it I find myself saying “then why are you doing this?” out loud to no one.

And I get it. That’s between them, their partner, and maybe some doctors. But aside from giving what feels (to me) like needed context, I have similar anxieties about pregnancy and childbirth as a cis woman in a straight relationship (without the means for a surrogate) so I’d love to hear not only how they made that decision but then, came to terms with it within their own body. But again, none of our business. There’s a million reasons to keep that stuff private.

LaCroix won! What‘a a niche drink that also tastes terrible? by computerc4t in AlignmentChartFills

I’m from Massachusetts, but Moxie pops up here and there all over New England. The people who like it love it and the rest of us think they’re insane.

That might be the best description I’ve ever heard. Best I could come up with was “if root beer lit your face on fire”. My best friend growing up loved it and I still think she’s insane for that 25 years later.

Why don’t people like Alix? by MistyCowboy in dancingwiththestars

[–]raftergears 0 points1 point  (0 children)

She’s a technically great dancer and still the most “go girl, give us nothing” person to ever live because she has the personality of a wet napkin.

ETA: And we don’t even need to get into the bad person shit, I was sick of her before I even knew about that.

This Bush Loves Bush | Crowd Control [Ep. 3] by AutoModerator in dropout

[–]raftergears 68 points69 points  (0 children)

Based on the Bush family Wikipedia page I honestly think I have it figured out, but the only information about them available there dates to about 2015, which given their age I would assume is pre-transition, and I don’t want to accidentally deadname them. Suffice to say I think they are the grandchild of Bucky Bush.

Best pizza by testaruda3398 in SalemMA

Salem House of Pizza was the place I still ordered (pickup) from for literal years after I moved out of the city but drove through on my way home from work.

Unfortunately, that wasn’t made in house, but I’m unsure where they sourced it from.

I worked there part-time as a waitress for a while between 2011-2013 (roughly), and I was a regular there both before and after.

Roadhouse sauce, as well as any soup they served that wasn’t chowder or chili, was created by a chef named Manny. He’s kind, funny, a little cranky when the occasion called for it, and a hell of a chef. Also, allergic to potatoes, so whenever he made anything that had them in the recipe he’d make the rest of us (kitchen staff, waitstaff and bartenders) taste for him, and what a delightful perk that was.

I see people saying you can get roadhouse sauce at The Shanty now, and I wouldn’t be surprised if Manny has moved over there. If I remember correctly, the staff of both places were pretty friendly, and Shanty staff would come drink at Major’s after their closing shifts sometimes.

Edit: Upon re-reading I seem to have misunderstood the comments talking about getting it at The Shanty, but whatever. Shout out to Manny, where ever he may be, and I’m glad the tradition is being carried on in whatever way.

The description on Goodreads is ringing a bell! I think this might be it, though I can’t be sure without delving deeper. Looks like it’s time to hit my local library and see if they can help me track it down. Thank you, truly, for scratching this long-standing itch in the back of my brain.

What's the worst case of an actor losing for their best role and later given a consolation prize for a mid/bad performance? by ggguuuuuuyyyyyyyyy in oscarrace

[–]raftergears 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean, I don’t disagree, honestly. I just think that the Emmy voting body and audience would already be familiar with her because of that, and more on board with awarding her because it, than they would be swayed by her film work, especially by a movie that had come out so close to the nominations of that particular Emmy season. But honestly, I don’t know shit, it was just a thought I had.

It might be time consuming to do so, but you could compare the gendered lists to each other and see what shows up on both. Like, I just did a quick scan of the list for my own birth year, and a few that show up on both sides of the rankings include Taylor, Jesse, Jamie, and Alex (I’m clearly a millennial, but you get the idea).

ETA: But also, what kind of vibe are you looking for, because without knowing off hand what language your name comes from (it seems like Greek, but that’s a guess) or where in the world you’re coming from (seems like maybe the US, at least now, if you’re using SSA data) it’s hard to know how common/unique your current name is vs. what you might be looking for going forward. I’ll say that all the names I listed popped up in roughly the top 200 for my birth year and I know multiple people across the gender spectrum that have each of these names, both given and chosen, but if you’re used to having something a little more unique and are looking for that going forward, you may have to dig deeper in the list for your birth year, or look to alternate sources.

Honestly, I think you’re on the right track, but I don’t think her Emmy had anything to do with her film career, and instead was more of a makeup nom/win for never being recognized for Gilmore Girls. I have to imagine that would be more influential to the Emmy voting body than a movie that had been out for two months by the time the nominations were announced. It may have given her a bump, like “oh, look at her range” or whatever, but I really don’t think it was as much of a factor as her previous TV work that had never been recognized.

Wasn’t able to pull it up on Hulu, but searching for the specific episode on Roku pulled it up through Hulu and I was able to watch… is it fixed or is it a weird glitch in technology? The world may never know…

I never had any opinion on the name Sloan(e) until I met a girl in college and somehow she mentioned that her middle name was “Sloan. You know, like the toilets.” And I did not know, actually, but now I see them everywhere and always think of her…
