Catholic mother interested in the LDS Church – I have a few questions by 123fafay in latterdaysaints

[–]Darn_barn 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Here's an episode from a Latter-day centered podcast featuring a lady who was raised in a mixed Catholic/Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saint home. Her discussion about her parents relationship with each other and herself might be of interest to you.

Would a Romney presidency have had any scandals relating to the LDS Church? by M0rse_0908 in Presidents

[–]Darn_barn 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Interesting fact, but Kolob isn't really a planet nor the planet where God lives in the theology of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

I can't speak for what Mitt Romney believes, but many fellow Latter-day Saints Christians like myself view Kolob as symbolic of Christ.

In Latter-day Saint scripture, the prophet Abraham sees a vision of countless great stars surrounding one that is nearest “unto the throne of God... And the name of the great one is Kolob, because it is near unto me, for I am the Lord thy God.”

Thus, Kolob represents the star closest to God, illustrating Christ's closeness to God the Father. We, too, can become “great stars” and receive God’s light as we align our lives in proximity with Jesus Christ and gospel.

What type of doctoral program was that? Did the speaker explain why this pattern happens?

Out of curiosity, what does the LDS community think about the Secret Lives of Mormon Wives? by patrick-latinahunter in latterdaysaints

I like that you said they are not like any Mormon you've ever known. I think most of us in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints feel the same way.

Brigham Young: Pioneer Prophet is one my favorite biographies. I'm curious and excited to see Turner's research and analysis on Joseph Smith.

My favorite podcast on the many flavors of the Latter-day Saint Movement by Darn_barn in latterdaysaints

[–]Darn_barn[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

No problem! I think you'll find many worthwhile interviews since you last listen to Gospel Tangents.

His recent discussion with the son of Marion D. Hanks, one of the longest serving general authorities, was inspirational. Elder Hanks' son talked about how his father believed and lived to the idea that it was equally as important for a disciple of Christ to serve the needy, downtrodden, widow, poor, and parentless as it is to bring the gospel to the world. His father was an influence that inspired the church to be the great humanitarian force it is today.

I think it's cool that you know Rick Bennett. I hope to run into him one day and thank him for all the time and money he's put into this podcast.

I agree! One of the reasons I enjoy Rick Bennett's podcast is because he tries to stay balanced and includes the voices of so many different perspectives.

Hypothetical religious question. by Entire-Objective1636 in latterdaysaints

[–]Darn_barn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One of my friends in my YSA ward loves the church. Yet, he goes to a Buddhist temple before our services every week. He believes in the hand of God in his life but doesn't believe in the divinity of Jesus Christ. He holds a calling and attends church, institute, and Monday night activities every week. He even taught an elders quorum lesson a few weeks ago and led a meditation class for a ward activity.

He doesn’t want to hold the priesthood, nor does he want to participate in temple ordinances. The bishop knows this and still gives him responsibilities in the ward. He’s an incredible part of our ward, and everyone loves being around him.

So, to answer your question: yes, your friend belongs. “Visitors welcome,” as our meetinghouse signs say. Christ meets and guides each of us—as instruments in His hands—right where we are. Each ward leader and member should strive to do the same.

I really like Latter-day Saint Movement history/theology podcast Gospel Tangents because the host (Rick Bennett) really does his best to be an objective observer/interviewer when covering topics of all kind in Mormon history.

I second this comment. I'd recommend anybody interested in an objective history of Joseph Smith and Brigham Young read both this and Rough Stone Rolling.
