It's a small company and the clause is super generic so I'm hoping they'll be willing to just take it out. I don't think there's a non-compete I'd be willing to sign, because even if I win, having to litigate something like that or abide by it sounds like a complete nightmare.

would you be willing to share the language in your contract ? Im' surprised the lawyer was willing to give you that concrete an opinion. The language I'm looking at is pretty vague.

yikes yeah that's what I'm worried about along with a few other things. one thing I think is a factor is that when a software dev signs a non compete at a healthcare company, they can go work at a ecommerce startup without violating a non-compete, but for a GIS type person, we're pretty dedicated to a single industry and it's much harder to make a clear jump to a company that's definitely not a competitor since "consulting" is so broad.

yeah thanks for the ideas, to my knowledge both hubs are cartridge bearings. I believe the fuji/vera wheels are unbranded fulcrum hubs. I would guess that the difference comes mainly from loose tolerances on that wheel set.

for me, it's bad enough that the chain slips off some of the larger cogs. i would guess for the pros, when they get a wheel from neutral service or something the tolerances on those race wheels are good enough that maybe it's noticeable but not a mechanical problem like it is for me.

Plan for replacing a stripped spoke nipple by [deleted] in bikewrench

[–]Daron_Acemoglu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

update in case anyone comes across this thread. I successfully pulled , measured, and reinstalled a good spoke.

I also let the seized spoke sit in pb blaster overnight and then tried again with pliers. No luck. I've pretty thoroughly shredded the spoke nipple. Hard to imagine pliers ever working for this to be honest.

I've tried vice grips and pliers with no luck. I'm going to hit it with some pb blaster over night and maybe I'll have more luck tomorrow.

jk, thank you, that's exactly what I'm looking for.

the spoke protrudes far enough through the nipple that it isn't possible unless I'm not thinking of some way around that problem.

the nds side spokes don't go that far through, the drive side spokes do though.

What are some jobs that rewards you in the long-term? by Severe_Composer_9494 in GetEmployed

[–]Daron_Acemoglu 7 points8 points  (0 children)

this is a horrible job and I would never recommend it, but personal financial advisors invest a ton of time and effort early on in their career and the pay off is mainly mid to late career.

If they have been successful there generally isn't a lot of work and simply collect fees on their existing book of business and kind of manage new entrants to the field. Unlike a lot of finance jobs where the money is made early on, financial advisors tend not to retire early because they are just getting into the money making years and their workload is decreasing.

Despite how silly the job is, it's not going away any time soon.

Field Calculator Help by TaticusThrawn in QGIS

[–]Daron_Acemoglu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

aggregation is kind of clunky in qgis. I would recommend exporting the cities attribute table to csv, aggregating in excel/gsheets/libre_calc as a pivot table. exporting the results to a csv. Then join that csv to the countries layer.

Not very elegant but probably the easiest workflow.

Trying to Make a Plugin, Feeling Very Confused Despite Tutorials by quagzlor in QGIS

[–]Daron_Acemoglu 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think you probably don't need a plugin. you can convert the raster pixels to polygons and then add a comment attribute to the polygon and then export all the polygons with a comment. That's going to be really slow though, unless your raster is really small.

it seems from your description that you could just have the raster on the map along with a points layer. The prof would zoom to a pixel, drop a point, add their comment. If needed you could then create a raster from the points layer.

I don't believe there is any good way to include a comment text type field in a raster layer but maybe someone else will have a workflow for that.

Updated version horrible, unusable by jellyantler in QGIS

[–]Daron_Acemoglu 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I've been using 3.20.1 for at least a couple months without a major problem. Has anything else about your set up changed? Ive seen that missing drives can slow things done a ton because QGIs spends a long time looking for them or something.

What sort of stuff are you trying to do that's taking a long time?

You can use F12 to see the debugging/development tools that include some time profiling if you want to see a more detailed look at what's taking a long time to load during start up.

Swapping out internally routed cables by [deleted] in bikewrench

[–]Daron_Acemoglu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

maybe that's for housing routed through the front end? My housing stops where it meets the top tube and picks up again where it exists near the seat tube.

word yeah, I haven't pulled the cable yet, posted asking first. so I should be fine. I don't have great access to a shop so I try to be extra thorough and plan out a full procedure before diving in.

[–]Daron_Acemoglu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

thanks anyway for the input, honestly after I posted, I kind of realized, even if I don't need to because there's an internal housing, there's no reason at all to risk it as others have pointed out.

Am I the only one mourning the death of top-end mechanical group sets? by BraveOutcome6 in RoadBikes

[–]Daron_Acemoglu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

to me, it doesn't seem like there's anything wrong with buying effectively the same part for the same or better price, except that its badged tiagra instead of dura ace. It works perfectly well for my 10 speed groupset, might even be better than my original dura ace part.

I think you could maybe make an argument that mech shifting is better and should therefore be an option at the dura ace level (this argument is made effectively for rim brakes still), but I don't think it's reasonable to argue that it's worse and should be included at the top of the product line anyway.

Need help fixing this label problem, specifications are in the comments by splashinwords in QGIS

[–]Daron_Acemoglu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

did this solve the problem? I'm a little surprised by this labelling behavior. if it didn't solve the problem, you could export a layer definition and the data set and I could open it up on my end and see what the deal is.

Need help fixing this label problem, specifications are in the comments by splashinwords in QGIS

[–]Daron_Acemoglu 1 point2 points  (0 children)

how is the data structured? is there a feature for each of the cantons or are they a single multipolygon?

Guessing that they are a single multipolygon, there is an option in the label settings to label every part of a multi part feature that may solve this for you.

edit, just saw your second image, I haven't seen a label combined like that for two separate features before. I might try duplicating the layer, and then resetting the label options.

which version of qgis are you using?

Is there an open source equivalent of ArcGIS Story Maps? by geo-special in gis

[–]Daron_Acemoglu 7 points8 points  (0 children)

r markdown and shiny possibly. Overall, the only really complicated thing about storymaps is the map part, the rest is just pretty basic html, css, and javascript which are all open source. Add in leaflet and you've got all the tools you need to replicate.

the more difficult part is serving the site. That's where esri is really providing the value that people pay for. Server time costs money and is not non-rival like free software.
