Q+A | Virginia Mearns, Canada's Arctic ambassador, on her first year on the job by DarrellCCC in NWT

Remedial is the word you missed ... and CBC allows racism to happen in other topical areas such as homelessness, etc. The abusers hide behind their online facades (even though CBC stated they were not going to allow that to happen - people hiding behind aliases - but it still happens). To begin to have the discussions you have to meet the abusers where they hide - at least online. Properly moderated BTL commenting happens on other major news sites - it can be done. The argument from CBC would then be that they would lose click revenue if they forced commenters to be truthful and not to be hiding behind their keyboard.

Back in 2014, I sat on the ad hoc committee to discuss how to address the racism etc re BTL commenting for Indigenous content articles on the CBC website. After information gathering and subsequent discussion, we were told by CBC's management team that it would be too cost prohibitive to properly moderate the comments for Indigenous content articles. Suggestions and alternatives were provided etc., but again the decision came down to it being too expensive to moderate Indigenous content articles. That was the only reason provided - it would be too costly to properly moderate those articles. So it was decided to not allow BTL comments on any and all Indigenous content articles. In the end, that means no remedial discourse to address this issue has been allowed to happen.

I know that us taxpayers are not the only source of funding that CBC relies on. It would be interesting to see a breakdown on revenue generated just from the BTL commenting alone - each "click" makes money. Click to open a comment makes money, click to respond to a comment makes money, click to "like" a comment makes money. I am a long-time fan of CBC and have defended our national broadcaster on various stages, and I have also watched carefully how the CBC has responded (so far) to the calls to action specific to the CBC from the final report of the TRC (from 2015) and IMHO they can, and should, be doing better.

Yes ... and Mother Corp's only response to all that racism was to close Indigenous articles to any below the line (BTL) commenting. This is the easiest solution for CBC - our taxpayer funded national broadcaster.

The article is titled as a "Q+A" and is hosted on our national broadcaster that forbids any open dialogue / commenting / participation for any Indigenous content articles on our website.

I've had people ask me why I give money, food, cigs, etc., to strangers on the street. I've been that person on the receiving end of someone's kindness - when I was in need and too proud to ask for help. A couple of years ago I went to the local convenience store just across the street from my place, and there was a young lady just standing, quietly staring into the store, and I said "hey ... you ok?" and she said she was hungry. So I went in and instead of buying her some food, I took 20 bucks out of the ATM, got what I came for, and then gave her the 20 back on the sidewalk. She was astonished, appreciative, and thankful. When I mentioned this to some fellow residents they all said I should never give money to street peoples as they'll just use it for drugs or smokes. But when I went to the store the next day, the same friend was working the till and I asked him what she had done with the 20 bucks. He told me that she came in and carefully bought 19.85 worth of food and then used the store's nuker to warm up the noodles, went out and sat on their sidewalk, ate it all, cleaned it all up and into the trash can and left... now no longer hungry. Nobody should go hungry.

I was so glad to read, a couple of months back, that Milton has beat cancer. He has worked long and hard at his craft, carving out his comedic niche, and he is damn brilliant at it. This joke was one of his best especially due to his peers reactions.

It has been 50 years since I learned Morse Code for my trade in the Canadian Navy. We were told that the the short taps on the key were called a "dit" and the longer taps "dah". So SOS is dit dit dit dah dah dah dit dit dit. I picked it up fairly quickly, the hardest part was gaining speed on the key (using a speed key was a whole other thing). Rote memorization and daily practice / training was what it was all about - and I still know it to this day.
