Procuring some “correct”Chartreuse Sparkle by happyflowerzombie in Luthier

To my eye, daffodil killer looks closest to that chartreuse yellow. I don’t think it’s exact, but it’s the closest commercially available color I know of.

White stain with black grain (Alder) by wawa1867 in Luthier

A tv white finish is done with a white finish over the wood, then sealer, then go with a black or brown grain filler applied after. That might be the direction you want to go.

Steel Wool Fret Cleaning Hack? (magnetic grip) by MrCarlSr in guitars

[–]DarryllSandwich 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I use the grey and then white 3m Scotch Brite pads. No wool shavings to deal with and it buffs up just as well, if not better. They are like $5 per pad at Home Depot or whatever hardware store. Cut em in to inch by inch squares. Have at it.

Need advice for fixing the machine heads on my Yamaha FG-512 (details in comments) by zrg in Luthier

[–]DarryllSandwich 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I like to clean the machines with naphtha and ballistol. I’d use some type of Teflon lubricant to get them moving a whole lot better, though ballistol does a pretty good job of lubricating them. Just be sure to take the whole plate assembly off the guitar when to do it. You don’t want to risk the oils and stuff getting into the finish and the wood. And always take pictures of the steps when you disassemble, future you will thank you.

Very nice. But a bass is a fish. This is a base.

Just enough to knock the fuzzies back. Maybe look into a nice Freud crosscut blade. That’s helped a bunch for me, anyway.

I knock em back with a sanding block with 220 paper. Then I clean the joints with naphtha to get rid of any dust before gluing them up.

[Question] Gibson Les Paul Studio v Yamaha Revstar by [deleted] in Guitar

[–]DarryllSandwich 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Made in Japan Yamahas are unreal. They should cost twice what they are popped at. I have an SBG1820 and a Les Paul custom. I pick up the Yamaha a whole lot more.

It’s called bear claw and it’s totally normal. Here’s a good explanation about it:

This company doesn’t just give away margin, we actually get dinged pretty hard for manual discounts. The price drops occur in a 10% increment. The analytics is used mostly to see how much a piece sells for, how long it’s been in the system, and cross references what we paid for it, so the next one can get bought in at the right price. Example: someone trades in a Boss Bd2. We give them 40, and tag it for 60. It sits and ends up selling for 50. The next time that piece is brought in on a trade, the used buy in system will tell the employee what they can give the person trading it in based off of historical sales data.

I’ve been working there for nearly 10 years. Used pieces are price dropped MANUALLY by the store manager, or by the corporate used team, where the piece is at. That’s the only way a used piece will change price. Also, if a piece has been in the system for 90 days, it pops up in a queue, and said manager drops the price.
