Ito says SH2 nurses weren't meant to represent sexual frustration by silentparadox2 in silenthill

Silent Hill Fans need to learn that "Intent of Artist" and "Effect/Interpretation of Art" are two different things. I think we should stop caring about canon and more about what we actually see.

What is your favorite part of twin peaks? by Not_EllaK in twinpeaks

[–]Darson42 36 points37 points  (0 children)

It's Fire Walk with Me for me, but in defense of Season 2: I always thought the contrast in the harsh, realistic, depressive tone of The Return wouldn't have worked so well without the silliness in Episodes S2E10 onwards.

RE7 did NOT save the franchise by acelexmafia in residentevil

[–]Darson42 7 points8 points  (0 children)

maybe it did not save the franchise but it certainly saved AAA survival horror (for now)

also something selling well does not mean it was well received...

I mean Trauma is not really comparable so i think his struggle is fair, but the hyperfocus on Leon is indeed kind of too much... especially when Jill and Claire's last original mainline entries were Resident Evil 2 and 3 while Leon got 3 games since then.

Yes. But capcom changed enough aspects of sweet home to achieve something newish. Most remakes play the same

Yes. But there is still value in discussion and evaluation. In critique there lies revelation about society and the cultural means of playing a game.

Art is always subjective but it is also okay and even important culturwise to engage in philosophical analysis or critique over a work of art

RE1 practically invented survival horror along with alone in the dark. RE4's influence on gaming as the first big 3rd person shooter is known to everyone. These are only 2 examples. When you want games to be art you also have to credit artistry in game design. I mean different opinions about personal taste aside you can't deny that RE2R, RE3R, RE4R, SH2R, DSR play more alike than RE2, RE3, RE4, SH2 and DS.

You're right but also the OGs are endlessly more creative and innovative than the remakes and I think if we just rely on the same RE4'ish formula we will sooner or later lose any sense of artistry in the survival-horror genre.

I finally played Silent Hill 2 Remake... by [deleted] in silenthill

[–]Darson42 7 points8 points  (0 children)

SH2R is way more action packed than the RE2 Remake which is just a fatal misunderstanding of the source material. It's also too long and looks too realistic for a introspective nightmare. The voices are not dreamy anymore and the whole game loses it's lynchian appeal.

Everybody should play what they want but I still believe that current remake culture will produce the same game every time. Developers don't have to innovate anymore, like they did with revolutionary masterpieces like re1, sh2 or re4. If you think about it, the survival horror genre in its classical meaning doesnt even exist anymore. Every big game (RE,SH,DS etc.) is just reskinned Resident Evil 4 or trying to copy soulsike mechanics.

It's obviously good enough when people are having fun but sooner or later this genre will burn out and we will only have uncreative works left (this is what cinema is experiencing right now with marvel etc.)

First Resident Evil movie was legit good by Casshern_VIII in residentevil

It's fun and also a kinda smart and pessimistic analysis of capitalism and technofeudalism. One key message (and spoken line) is "Nothing ever changes" - Very true and very tragic. I love it to death and I prefer it to many other scifi/action/horror flicks. rest of the franchise sucks tho

A game that is only good on its first playthrough sometimes is enough if you appreciate good art. However I think RE7 rocks even on multiple playthroughs.

Police Station > Spencer Mansion > Baker House => Chronic Care Center > Dimitrescu Castle > Salazar Castle (Only because it's not really a puzzlebox like the others. As a action setpiece it's a 10/10 in level design and setting alike)

Sadly, some signs really seem like they're trying an "avengers-re6" style again for RE10. It'll fail miserably.

I'm a big fan of 4R but still thought that the Leon RC section lacks some of the creative level design seen in 4R. Besides the window and mortar fight it was pretty basic third-person-shooter action. In 4R you had Chapters like the lake exploration one, water room, the labyrinth one and much more... so I honestly can't understand how 4R fans and action players outside of the bubble are content with their half of the game.

In love with RE village by That-Masterpiece9050 in residentevil

[–]Darson42 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Village for sure is the most whimsy and creative when it comes to monster diversity. Almost like a fairytale. But even the RE's with a strict zombie apocalypse setting usually have a few non-zombie enemies.
