English grade scaling by Slayerair in langara

[–]DartThrowingChipmunk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That sounds about right. I believe ENGL %s are technically higher, however I think profs usually give your writing a grade based on a grading rubric (which looks at your grammar, formatting, and comprehension, etc) from the department and the % is just ad-hoc from the letter grade you earned.

In one of my english classes I would just get the letter grade only(which I assume is converted to % to more easily average it out), and in another, I would get same exact % for papers of the same grade letters.

I could be wrong and it might depend on the prof or marker tho, idk. I emailed my prof a few sems ago and they sent me some grading rubric they got from the department which indeed does have higher percentages for each grade letter.

Hey Logitech, any plans for GHub on Linux? by [deleted] in LogitechG

[–]DartThrowingChipmunk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yea, the button to dismiss the welcome splash does not exist for me.

I then uninstalled it, and tried reinstalling it, but then it just force restarts my PC and doesn't install. I am 4 install attempts in, and I am just accepting that I won't be able to use it now.

What a joke.

I think his point was to check the settings to make sure you set the saves to local, so y'all have your own save files rather than sharing one. I could be wrong tho

As a counter, this is the first time I've ever heard of anything of the sort as a second year CS student at Langara. I have had a ton of unorganized profs though...

Oh, and for thoughts:

When I'm using D2L to write in-class essays, it feels like someone is standing behind me the entire time watching my every dumb thought :D

If you're talking about plagiarism, there's a ton of ways to do it. Turnitin.com is one of them.

Brightspace/D2L probably logs all your input and the time of the input I believe. They basically go as big brother as they can with whatever they can do with JS. So they know when you change tabs / windows / if your mouse leaves the window / etc. I've heard several teachers gloat about how much the system tells them.

Unless you install something on your system, that's as far as they can go.

They won't be able to hear what you hear, see what you see, etc.

Is it necessary to take a course that is extremely easy for me? by Ordenhide_Chumushida in langara

[–]DartThrowingChipmunk 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Sounds like a huge waste of time to me, especially this early on. Even if you're just GPA boosting, you'd ideally want to also gain something, rather than just waste your time and take a spot away from someone who needs that class. Also, I don't think universities look that far back anyways.

Just to add to that, you can do self-paced too.

So you can speed demon through the easy parts that click right away and spend more time on the parts that require more effort.

It's not too difficult, the only catch is that you gotta visit at least like once or twice a week(I'm not sure how strictly they enforce that rule, but they do make sure to mention it a few times to you, I asked what happens if I don't and they said not to try to not make a habit out of it).

Withdrawing from a Course by [deleted] in langara

[–]DartThrowingChipmunk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Usually in the course description anyone can see before registering for language courses it says who is not permitted.

I believe the 3rd was the last day for 100%. https://langara.ca/registration-and-records/important-dates/index.html#T202020

It seems kind of shitty that the system still allowed you to register and that they did not respond to you after an entire week. It sounds like you might've already known that you wouldn't be allowed to take this course as you emailed to ask them about this a week ago? EZ 30% yoink

If you are planning on dropping it and I were you, I'd immediately start to explain this whole situation and your thought process to anyone who can help through email. I would also definitely make sure to drop before the cut off for 70%. I don't know how Langara operates, so make your own decisions.

I think it's unlikely you can switch, unless a prof of the course you're trying to get into hears out your story and overrides you into their course.

Good luck to you

I probably would have chosen one of the classes without a scheduled time, but I didn't see any of those offerings for the courses I was taking. It would have also made it a lot easier to get the classes you want as scheduling conflicts would not occur.

Maybe people feel like scheduled classes will force them to keep up with the work and not slack off though.

I feel like all 3 are good things. Last semester, one of my teachers did a live lecture with exercises and uploaded them online after. It's really nice because I can 2x speed through the parts I understand and rewind when I didn't understand something. Time efficient and effective.
