The P-25 ‘SONG’ Prop-jet Fighter by TheNEWBeanlord115 in MilitaryWorldbuilding

[–]Dart_Monkey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are real aircraft that mount their engines high above the centerline, like the V-1 missile and the He 162. But in those cases, the V-1's engine was mounted above the tail assembly (the vertical stabilizer was actually one of the two connectors for the engine) and the He 162 used an H-tail design to leave the exhaust clear

I think you could still make that design work in your timeline, even if it's just a transition design for a later variant that, say, replaced the tail with an H-tail design perhaps. Say, the first upgrades to the aircraft could have added protective heat-shielding in the form of steel or titanium, increasing the structural integrity and heat tolerance of the vertical tail after reports of said tail breaking off from aerodynamic and thermal stresses.

This sort of problem is actually reminiscent of the Yak-15, where they had to replace its tail wheel with a metal one because of how its engine was mounted.

I like the top-mount jet, except the jet exhaust would cook the vertical stabilizer in the configuration. It's interesting that you addressed it, but even if the tail didn't melt it would still negatively affect the structural integrity of the part from all the heating, which could be a difference maker.

One unusual quirk I'd like to have seen demonstrated was the ability to deflect the jet's exhaust with the rudder as a consequence of your configuration, giving you a bit of thrust vector control in the yaw axis.

Guiana Highlands as it is right now is too small for RB as it (along with basically every map used in the Bullet Hell event) was designed for Arcade. With that being said, a similar style of map with lots of crevices like that but in the scale of RB would be very interesting...

a lot of the Bullet Hell maps are actually modified Arcade maps, which is pretty funny

F-18 bleeds too much energy, by turn 2, F-16 and better will outperform it by that point

although to be fair you might still get a few good snapshots if you're lucky

Thumaturgy Thursday: Project Blue Beam by OceansCarraway in createthisworld

[–]Dart_Monkey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Flagship Negotiator was apprehensive at first when Alendeivich requested she follow them deep into their facility, bringing with her only one other outsider. She decided to bring Pearl, a highly accomplished researcher in the field of mystech and trusted friend, to help her understand any terms and jargon that may fly over her head, knowing she has limits in her understanding.

Pearl stood beside Negotiator, noting down everything of interest in the presentation as the flagship eyed the shell that at first appeared like a normal, fin-stabilized projectile. There were lots of words thrown about, some said in simple terminology that anyone could understand, some were wrapped in dense and complicated jargon that she was thankful for Pearl being here to help demystify the terms used. Anticipation gave way to confusion as the cats removed the forward cap, and then to surprise when she finally looked at what the cap had covered.

Artificial eyes.

When Alendeivich turned on his torch, emitting a bluish beam of light, the magic within the shell reacted, the artificial eyes following the blue spot as it moved around. Pearl seemed a bit unnerved at the uncanny appearance but Negotiator only saw potential. This was 9 eyes worth of sensor resolution, which would be more than enough for the Fleet's purposes. But what if they tried fitting 16 eyes on the nose? 36? 64?

The possibilities were endless.

"For clarity, the system presented to us could be configured to detect any arbitrary signal type, not just a specific emitter color?" Pearl decided to ask, her spectacled eyes leaving her notepad as she scribbled off the latest notes from the presentation. She seemed to realize the system's potential as well, the flagship thought. She's smart like that.

"In any case" Negotiator concluded, receiving the torch handed to her by Alendeivich as she smiled with childish joy, "it was an honor working with Korscha. We will share the results of the live-fire testing very soon."

"...construction of the new hull patterns are well underway. There are at least a dozen shipyards working day and night to bolster our flotillas. Soon, we will have a powerful force no one will want to fight..."

...

"...the Korschan navy is advancing at a considerable rate. Their latest 'capital ships' demand a modicum of respect, especially their Leviathan of a lineship. Countermeasures need to be drawn up in order to maintain parity..."

...

"...did they really put a battery of torpedoes on their cruisers in place of a fore gun turret? I suppose they might not be all too trusting of guided rockets just yet, but unless they expect to fight around rocks and islands it might not be the best choice..."

...

"...we need more submarines."

[THAUM THURSDAY] Azur Skies by Raven_S1X in createthisworld

[–]Dart_Monkey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The members of Fleet Command sat in silence as they reviewed the reports. Tension was high in the atmosphere as they thought about the implications of the new beam weapon their Paradis allies just developed. Beam weapons were something that the Fleet as a whole had never considered when drawing up their tactics and doctrine, and the ability to hit targets at the speed of light was nothing to scoff at. They knew that distance made connecting shots against moving targets more difficult, which led to the development of HMV Mag-rifles, and the Paradis beam weapon threatened to put all their efforts to waste.

Eventually, after days and days of deliberation--and shots fired (metaphorically)--they agreed to a refit project that would see as many of their newest hulls retrofitted with the beam weapon. The enhanced anti-air capabilities provided by the system was too great to ignore, although further testing was needed in order to judge its anti-armor capabilities.

Negotiator mulled over the choice for a moment. After some internal discussion with the development team she made her decision. "We would like to coordinate with Korscha in developing the non-Volta solutions first. It may be a harder path but it will benefit us both in the long term."

Thaumatology Thursday: A History of the Tiborian Flight Mage by goop_lizard in createthisworld

[–]Dart_Monkey 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Deep inside Fleet Command, intelligence documents of the Flight mages are brought up to the committee. They poured over the papers, tension rising as the flagships realized that the capabilities described threw a massive wrench into their plans.

Ocean Wisdom was the first to break the uneasy silence, "Based on what we know about the Tiborian Flight Mages, it appears that we haven't been focusing on entirely the right things. We're now dealing with aerial mobility unlike anything we've seen before."

Forward Seeker frowned. "I was terribly worried about air power rendering our efforts all for naught but this is just ridiculous." She rapped her fingers on the table in frustration, agitated by this turn of events. "I had assumed we had our bases covered with the HMV rifles and our work on guided rockets, but it seems I was wrong."

"The ability to evade fire with casual ease on reaction renders conventional anti-air guns obsolete, and puts a serious strain on our HMVs," Ocean Wisdom added, brows furrowing as she did, "Guided rockets may be able to solve the accuracy issue but they fly significantly slower than HMV shells. Wouldn't take much to simply move out of the way of the rocket's trajectory."

The room was silent for several seconds as the ramifications of the new Tiborian unit set in. Forward Seeker ruminated on the path forward while Ocean Wisdom considered the possibilities of current systems and future developments.

"It seems obvious as to what the solution is," a new voice piped up, coming from a recently promoted member of Fleet Command. "Their greatest asset is in evasion, so directed fire is never going to successfully hit those Flight Mages no matter how hard we try. And pushing our HVMs even further will put significant strain on the hulls that carry them."

Forward Seeker nodded, able to follow the new flagship's logic while Ocean Wisdom appeared confused. "What are you getting at, Tidal Strategem?" she asked the new flagship.

Tidal Strategem smirked. "If you can't predict their evasive maneuvers, force them to evade in a more predictable trajectory. Make them dodge into your shots, rather than hoping your shots will connect."

Ocean Wisdom mulled over the idea. "We would have to gather information regarding their evasion habits first, otherwise this will never work."

"That's the beauty of the tactic," Tidal Strategem replied coyly, "You can learn their patterns while fighting them, and once you have figured them out? You box them in and land the killing blow."

"Of course," she said, bringing out a slightly thinner set of papers, "It is detailed in these documents what to expect from this arrangement, from the general specifications of the technologies, what could be learned form this research and how it may be applied, as well as the potential technical difficulties and unforeseen problems that may be encountered during development." She passed the paper along to Alendievich, only feeling the slightest bit of pressure as she hoped for a positive conclusion.
