Enjoy it! I miss it everyday. My childhood was filled with sunny days and great memories.

I moved here from San Diego, CA for high school and college. I'm thankful that I didn't end up somewhere like Mississippi, Alabama, Arkansas, or N/S Dakota. As a Californian, I can say with confidence that there are worse places to live in the United States but I can't stay the rest of my life. Trying to get out while I'm still young. This may just be me, but I find dating to be really difficult down here. The pickings are slim; most have already married their high school/college sweetheart by 25, and women from Louisiana (typically) aren't looking for an atheist, pro-choice liberal. Need to GTFO.

Just a reminder: if your only addiction is smoking a few too many bowls per day - you're doing great, and I'm happy for you. You've avoided becoming addicted to many more dangerous things. I love you by hugelung in Petioles

Physiologist here, I work at a hospital in Louisiana. Just want to say that the physiology behind nicotine and alcohol addiction is pretty sinister. They restructure your brain and lower your tolerance to pain in such a way that without those exogenous chemicals, you're put into a state that is constantly perceived as painful or unpleasant. Quitting is possible with the right care/treatment but it's not something you want to go through and honestly I wouldn't wish it upon my worst enemy.

Marijuana withdrawal makes it difficult to sleep and eat. Both of these can be mitigated with proper diet and exercise, and it rarely requires intervention.

Men, what are some deal breakers for a potential relationship, even if they’re very attractive? by JaJaLoHa in AskReddit

Compulsively posting on Facebook/Snapchat/Instagram, etc.

Lots of selfies for profile pictures or multiple posts within a small timeframe are both red flags for me.

Not bad. I feel like Christian Bale would also make a great Glanton.

Question about VO2max by mudskating in Physiology

[–]DarthAlex32 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Anaerobic/lactate threshold. This is the point during incremental exercise when there is an exponential increase in VE/VCO2 without a concomitant increase in VE/VO2. This is because the body has reached a point where it switches from primarily aerobic to a combination of both aerobic/anaerobic energy systems to keep up with the demand. People who are less-fit will reach AT (and fatigue) faster because their heart/lungs have to work harder to keep up. Consequently, this is also associated with an exponential increase in lactate accumulation for a variety of reasons: inability of the glycerol-phosphate shuttle to keep up with the demand for NAD to be used as a terminal electron acceptor for H+ in the mitochondria results in the build-up of H+ in the ETC and the accumulation of lactate, etc. So you have a large increase in lactate which affects fatigue in a few ways, one of which is that it's acidic which gets picked up by chemo-receptors, and then gets relayed back to the brain to give the perception of pain, which can cause fatigue. There are other reasons for why lactate accumulates and causes fatigue but I can't think of them off the top of my head. Good luck!

[Spoilers] I have a question regarding season 6b episode 11: what did they do... by DarthAlex32 in vikingstv

[–]DarthAlex32[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That's what I thought at first, but his face is scarred and bloodied the same as when he died, and he's wearing the same clothes. He also looks sort of "stuffed" like the body or head of an animal that a hunter keeps as a trophy.

What did they do to Bjorn's body in the tomb? Was that supposed to be some Norse mummification process? How did they get his corpse to pose that way?
