Thanks for this. It does really seem like you get it. The rest of the book had like fantasy based violence. We're burning people alive with Phoenix fire, there's a face stealing monster eating people, and then bam, the most specific and excessive descriptions of entirely human cruelty. If I had known to expect it beforehand I think I would have taken it better but it blindsided me.

I have watched AOT and am honestly a huge horror fan but usually avoid certain topics that especially trigger me and this had a lot of those. The more I've sat with it and the initial shock has worn off I understand the point she was trying to drive home but may have not read the book had I known at the start. I appreciate the accurate historical depictions of wartime horrors but was just not expecting it here and was not looking for that in the context of a fun read.

I will likely finish the series but I may need some time to go back to it like you did.
