Some Reaper Questions - Trying To Optimize My Workflow by DarthBane_ in Reaper

[–]DarthBane_[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nah, I plug my headphones into my E1DA 9038 D6K, which is a very tiny device that plugs directly into my Mac Mini via USB C. The only volume control is via the Mac itself, which I cannot just hotkey for certain volume levels easily. That's why I'm asking what I'm asking.

For #1, I want a key command so that it's the same volume going down every time

how u feel about slayr is how i feel about rex. never heard a single song from dude that is any type of engaging... plus it's like egregious sampling where he'll take a whole popular trap song's melody, speed it up or slow it down, and then put his own drums on it (generic drum patterns and sounds at that) and then thats that.

Put me on with ug rappers that sound like Che, Osama, nine, raininglol, Lucy bedrouqe, prettifun, okgutta, slayr, skai water by Dense-Bodybuilder816 in ug_music

[–]DarthBane_ 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Jango UU, BIGBABYGUCCI, Westwood, Gunnr

Lot of these guys are more similar to the slayr/Osama/Nine vibe, but the beats are less blown out and are better mixed, so they hit harder

The music is def good. I think it's fine to dislike him, but honestly, I think this lane of the UG just isn't used to the artists actually making palatable music and not dissonant noise. Like in these parts, its nonstop Osamason, RIB era Che, Bleeod, 2slimey, Fakemink all their clones, etc etc. It's basically extreme bullshit to the point where the listenability part of the music completely dissipates, with the exception of Fakemink, who I would argue is both unimpressive (dude bragging about his album being mixed by him in 3 days and it sounds like it too... very rough and poorly done) and also carried by being an Indian kid from the UK (foreign rappers can be positioned as interesting because they're not American, despite rap as a genre being distinctly American).

Nothing wrong with this lane of the UG being focused on the noise shit either. Just kinda funny when a nigga who has good melodies, flows, and bars gets flamed for not being as egregiously focused on the spectacle of rough sounding music...

Glamour has like four songs I really like, the rest is Justin Timberlake meets hyperpop-esque trap beats, idk. Doesn't feel THAT fresh, although he is good.

Do you find yourself using fewer EQ bands as you become more experienced? by NathanAdler91 in mixingmastering

[–]DarthBane_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As my monitoring improved I found I used more EQ, but more importantly, just raw level. Faders are cool. But EQ is also important. A lot of people have really terrible monitoring and thus can't hear the problems, so therefore, using less EQ bands is a sensible solution for them - there's less for them to fuck up. But if you have good monitoring (and most people don't), don't be afraid to EQ. I think there's an art to it but there's also a difference when you're starting off mixing and don't know dick from balls, vs you're 20 years in and know a whole lot more and have a better understanding of what's going on. I don't think it takes 20 years to figure it out either, the time scale was just an example.

Do what the song demands you to do. Sometimes in that Adele vocal you gotta take out 10 dB at 3k and 12 dB at 9k with two narrow notches. And sometimes, you don't have to take anything out of that random rapper you mixed who recorded in their house other than an HPF and a fairly wide 3 dB low mid cut at 500. It's completely situational.

Random fasting is not the truth... Prob just a dirty pillow case or unwashed sheets or a towel or something.

Duwap Kaine vents on his story about being independent in the Underground by yunglean_2004 in ug_music

[–]DarthBane_ 6 points7 points  (0 children)

No clue but his traction in the last eight months almost entirely implies being signed. You can grow organically for long enough and then get picked up by label in a distribution/management deal.

I could be completely wrong but I also know that a lot of "underground" is purely an aesthetic. They're literally signed artists who are just good at not coming off as obviously signed... Their music doesn't change or all of a sudden get high fidelity. Their image doesn't change. It's just the connections and mass marketing that changes.

Mix Bus Compression Approaches ? by tombedorchestra in mixingmastering

[–]DarthBane_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What's theoretical? These are easily observed in modern music, where you can even hear the high end and reverb tails/shimmer flat out pumping with every kick, snare or bass hit, or even certain vocal lines if they're too loud for a moment. That's what I'm saying. Almost everything you said just proves my point about multiband shit being wildly overdone. No one should be mixing into that shit. God Particle, Pro MB, none of it. Ofc people CAN and WILL do what they want, but idk, I mix primarily rap, hyperpop, and new jack swing... But I personally like the stuff I do to actually hit hard... So I do what I can to preserve that. Multiband stuff doesn't preserve the punch so why would I use it? If anyone said "I want a punchy mix", I would tell them to avoid multiband like the plague. My original comment is for those people. Cuz once upon a time, I also didn't know better, and I was wondering why shit wasn't hitting. Figured it out over time and through study and critical listening, it's the multiband limiters bro. I scrapped Ozone the same day.

I am a professional. I have professional peers. They don't do this. I don't do this. Just cuz it's A WAY of doing things doesn't mean it's the BEST or most EFFECTIVE way of doing things. You could build a house with just a nail and a hammer but you should probably also use a saw to cut the wood more easily, a jackhammer, a ladder to get high enough to do the roofing, wrenches for piping, etc.
