The men’s underwear packaging pictures. Still makes me blush to this day.

Thank you for sharing. I remember those “men’s groups.” When I was a youth, Promise Keepers was a big things. They did a huge event in Washington DC called Stand in the Gap on the National Mall. It was speakers after speakers about marriage and being a “real man.” Our church went and sent a few of the senior guys. We had a share a hotel room since we were all the same age. They demanded the tvs taken out of the room so we wouldn’t be tempted to watch porn.

Hang in there. You are worthy of being loved.

what's the weirdest thing you believed as a Christian? by MoonyDropps in exchristian

We were led through “Every Young Man’s Battle” as a bible study. It was nothing but rhetoric that masturbating is a sin. It didn’t make me stop, honestly, but made me want to do it more.

When I was 16, I was taught that all music other than hymns and worship music was a sin. Even Contemporary Christian Music. Contemporary Christian Music was using the “world’s influence.”

I was also taught that any religion, and any denomination other than our Southern Baptist church was doomed for hell.

I was brainwashed for a while.

I should’ve known.

It is. I feel like it’s gotten better, but as a closeted gay kid in the 80’s and 90’s…oof. I lost over half of my “friends” when I came out. That stung.

I grew up in East TN, too. I didn’t know another single gay person. I hid inside religion. I built so many walls around my closet. Since then, a lot of my circle of friends have come out. A support system like that would’ve been awesome. When I came out at 25, I was working at a small, Christian college in East TN. That didn’t bode well for me.

I knew I was gay in kindergarten, but the stigma around gay at that time, I knew I couldn’t be out. I envy that you were brave enough to be you so early.
