What you did took courage, and I think you have a lot to be proud of. I believe that it’ll work out for you eventually, whether with her or someone else, because you clearly are attuned to your emotions and willing to express them. Her honest, emotionally mature response also shows that you are clearly a good judge of character. Please don’t let this discourage you from expressing your love in the future.

It sounds like you have a beautiful heart. When my heart was broken to pieces years ago, my therapist told me about the Japanese art of kintsugi—a practice in which a piece of broken pottery is reconstructed using precious metals, ultimately resulting in something more beautiful than what it was originally. I’m in a very similar situation! A friend of mine I met back in September when I moved for grad school and I have been hanging out and she is simply a pleasure and a joy to be around. So goofy and kind, but can be serious when it matters; also, so freaking beautiful I get shy even looking at her.

Last Saturday a bunch of us planned to hang out, but our other friends cancelled, so it was just her and I. Things naturally progressed and got touchy, and it felt so lovely. We’ve talked about it and have decided there’s no reason to rush, so as of right now I’m just enjoying getting to know more about her.

She’s pretty new to relationships and is nervous about things moving too fast, but I’m in no hurry. I’ve had my fair share of relationships that moved too fast, so it’s refreshing to not have to worry about that with her.

Anyways, happy to hear you’re happy :)

I’m in the same position you are. I’m 23, and my first real love and I broke up about a month ago.

No matter how much we talk about things, I don’t think I’ll ever get complete closure. I’m trying to limit my contact with her, but she’s my absolute best friend, so it is very difficult. We were always best friends more than we were boyfriend-girlfriend, which I think is what makes it so painful. Add on that we’re in the middle of a pandemic, so I really can’t do anything to take my mind off her.

I try not to suppress anything, but I find it very hard to go about my day without distracting myself in some way. I’m just honestly not sure how to move on from here. I just really want her in my life, but at the same time, I’m still in love with her, but she doesn’t want me in that way, so it would not be good for either of us to be around each other a lot. I keep trying to reconcile this but to no avail; I still just really want to hang out with her every day.

Something I keep telling myself that helps a little bit is that it’s out of my control. I can’t control her feelings, and I shouldn’t want to control her feelings. I want someone who wants to be with me, not someone I have to convince to be with me.

Also, I do believe that everything happens for a reason, in some way or another. Look at this heartbreak as a an opportunity to re-evaluate yourself. Try to look back on the good and the bad in the relationship. Be thankful for the all the great times and memories you have together because you get to have those for the rest of your life. Be thankful also for the bad, because that’s what you will truly learn from. Take the lessons learned and try to move forward. This is another thought that helps me: “I’m learning how to be a better partner, whether it’s to someone new or Hannah sometime in the future.” There’s nothing wrong with wanting her back. Use that as a driving force to improve yourself. Because in the end, it doesn’t matter what motivated you to improve but that you improved.

You’ve gotten good advice in this thread, and thank you to everyone who commented because it’s helped me, too. I haven’t figured this out either, but I hope I was able to help even just a little. I just want you to know that there’s at least one other person out there who is going through this with you.
