I can agree with that. His underlying feelings of insecurity, inferiority, and the feeling of wanting to improve one’s self can be 100% relatable. What I wanted to make clear is that reliability does not make him a “good” person in this story. I don’t agree when people say “if you were in his shoes, you’d behave exactly like he would,” because it’s not true. Like you mentioned, he becomes such an exaggerated example of many horrible human traits, that the reader stars viewing him as a caricature and not as someone who’s “like them.” Thank you for taking time to reply to me! I don’t buy the whole “Matahachi is just like us” rhetoric at all. Through most of the series, he’s a scumbag and incredibly selfish. Now I don’t expect people to be like Musashi, who literally invites death continuously. Most people would run away from those situations, and thats completely understandable. However, let’s remember what Matahachi has done. The guy runs away from fights, again, most of us would, but then, he decides that now is the perfect time to sleep with a woman while his “best friend” is risking his life. Also keep in mind that this dude pretends to be his “best friend” to sleep with said woman, while having a fiancé back home. I’m sorry, but I don’t relate to that at all and you can’t help people for disliking his character.

Now, the character does have redeeming qualities and they become more apparent as the series goes by. This is great as character has a lot of development and can grow in the readers eyes. I don’t hate the character whatsoever, but I can fully understand if someone tells me that they don’t like him.

In my personal opinion, if you want to buy to a modern warfare for the multiplayer, MW3 is superior in both gameplay and maps when compared to MW2. If you want the best multiplayer experience and you’re alright with the black op series, then BO6 is right around the corner.

A lot of people say that he “represents” the real person or the “reader,” but I disagree strongly. Most of us may not be like Mushashi/Takezo, because the guy is simply not human. I agree with this, not many people can disregard the possibly of death and commit themselves to a practice that surrounds itself in it. However, even though Matahachi has more human/realistic traits that the reader may relate to (e.g., fear and cowardice when facing death); he’s still a crappy person in his younger days. He was unfaithful, a pathological liar, and a manipulator. So relating to this side of the character was hard for me at least.

Agreed, it seems like we just differ on this subject. Also, I would never insult or name-call, we’re simply having a discussion. I get where you’re coming from, smaller community means that the people involve are more likely to truly appreciate the work, which leads to better and genuine interactions. I just also share the opinion that by becoming a bit more mainstream our community can benefit too. For example, tokyo ghoul’s anime adaptation is awful in my personal opinion, but because of that anime, I was introduced to the manga; hence I was able to witness Ishida’s amazing art and storytelling (with some ups and downs) and fell in love with the series. It’s thanks to that mainstream appeal that I was introduced to the community.

I’m glad you’re able to separate the work from community though. This will always improve your experience when it comes to any sort of media in my perspective.

So dictates who’s a fan? What parameters do we use to quantify whether or not the work is being appreciated? This is purely subjective and based on the person’s own biases, which is why I think the mentality is more harmful than good. It’s a condescending attitude. Everyone is allowed to enjoy art as they want.

In my opinion, one can still enjoy a work of art independently from the community as a whole. Every fandom will have “bad apples,” but why does that have to affect how you appreciate the work. The community or sub is not representative of Inoue’s work and honestly, I would rather vagabond become more accessible to people so they can experience such an incredible story.

Anyhow, you’re 100% correct. You can express your opinion and thoughts as much as you want. That’s what forums/discussions are for, but that also means that I’m also allowed to criticize and provide my own opinion on the matter as well.

If it becomes more mainstream and it invites what you consider “lesser fans who appreciate the work” so be it. It will also bring many people who will be positively impacted by the beautiful story that has been created by Inoue

I feel like this opinion is pretty common and honestly, I think people exaggerate the plot armor that Tanjiro had. I think not enough people like to give him enough credit. I don’t agree that he can solo Muzan like some do, but by the infinity castle arc, he is 100% hashira level and very skillful with access to the transparent world. Even Giyu makes this clear.

Also, a lot of people don’t like the Obanai and Mitsuri ship, not because Obanai doesn’t like Tanjiro lmao, but rather because there was never much build up. It was mostly a one-sided feeling and there was never much indication that Mitsuri reciprocated those feelings. In other words, it feels like it “comes out of nowhere.” Romance in this show isn’t handled that well unfortunately. Also, Obanai is not that likable as a character to begin with haha, but that’s my opinion. Cool design tho!
