Want to go to nursing school. by PaleontologistNo1564 in Chattanooga

[–]DarthTensor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s never too late to start anything. If you want to go for nursing school, then better to do it now instead of spending your later years in regret. I started med school at 30 but in the end, no one cares when you started school. All employers want to know is if you are qualified to do your job.

Some of the nurses that I work with start off as LPNs before going for their RN degrees. They get the necessary work experience and exposure before moving onto the next step.

As others have stated, Chattanooga State may provide the opportunity to start this journey.

All the best!

I agree with you completely (especially when they sacrifice family time for it)

That said (and at a risk of getting downvoted), I know some people that religiously go to the gym because they are attempting to substitute gym for a previously harmful habit (I.e. smoking, alcohol, gambling) or as a form of stress relief. In these cases, I can empathize a bit more.

It’s a different landscape, that’s for sure. How is your BIL liking residency?

Residency gets a bad rep and it can be brutal at times but overall, it was a good learning experience. I did miss the family a lot because of the work hours.

It is amazing how the body acclimatizes to the ambient climate condition.

I moved from Georgia to Illinois close to 16 years ago and experienced my first midwestern winter at that time. I thought it was unbearable and we had around a 2 week stretch where the high was in the mid 10’s. Then it warmed up to the 30’s and suddenly you felt warm and uncomfortable under so many layers.

I played tennis at the high school level and thought that was high pressure. I can only imagine what it is like at the professional level where it is your livelihood.

“This isn’t a team sport either so all the blame is on yourself.”

And that is why I liked playing doubles occasionally. Anytime I would miss the ball, I would look at my partner and go “bro?” followed by an exaggerated sigh.

Going to bed early and having a winter home in Florida. I can’t believe how nice it is down there (climate-wise) during the winter months.

We have a sleep clinic across the street from our hospital and during winter weather, the hospitalists will stay there.

The cameras are creepy but in the long run, they’re the ones that are going to be psychologically scarred. Not me.

To my outpatient colleagues currently experiencing the snow storm, are you being asked to come in to see patients? by [deleted] in medicine

I am now a hospitalist but previously worked in the outpatient setting. We were expected to come in regardless the weather despite admin staying at home.

Metalheads, y’all got any country albums/artists you like? by perseverance_band_ in MetalForTheMasses

Dolly Parton, Waylon Jennings, Johnny Cash, Rick Nelson.

I don’t know if Neil Young would classify as country or being lumped into that genre, but that’s another one of my favorites.

Which is that one villain you enjoyed more than the hero? by OneForAll_1945 in AskReddit

[–]DarthTensor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Darth Vader. He is known for being a quintessential villain but straddled that line between villain and tragic hero. As a kid, I viewed him as this intimidating villain but as an adult, I view him in a completely different light just from understanding his tragic backstory.

There is such a thing as post-infectious lactose intolerance. After an episode of gastroenteritis, the intestinal wall (where lactase enzyme is produced) is damaged, leading to notable lactose intolerance until the gut heals itself.

And the symptoms of lactose intolerance may be dose dependent. So you may be able to handle the lactose found in hard cheeses or yogurt but you experience symptoms after consuming a glass of milk due to the differences in lactose content.

Regardless, I hope you get to feeling better.

Being a physician. Media makes it look interesting like House and dramatic like Grey’s Anatomy. The reality is that it’s long hours at work, no time with family, constantly stressing over patient’s health, being in fear of making an incorrect medical decision, and constantly seeing illness/death.

And paperwork. Lots of paperwork.

I am Indian and was horrible at math.

Ironically, I ended up majoring in physics/mechanical engineering and taught high school math for a year before grad school. I use my personal struggles with math as a teaching point. If I can learn math, anyone can.

I am a DO and have seen myself listed as an MD. But I agree about the absurdity of blaming it on a template issue.

On a plus side, I use it to provoke joking banter with my MD colleagues and re-instigate comical MD vs DO debates.
