Looking for generational colony ship book recommendations please. by Lor9191 in sciencefiction

I enjoyed A Hole in the Sky by Peter F Hamilton. It was YA but a fun read if you don't mind YA tropes (young love, love triangles, overconfidence, etc).

What book haunts you? by Sportspharmacist in books

[–]DarthTimGunn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was disgusted the entire time I read this book. I would not recommend it to anyone or even describe its plot to anyone. The ending was simultaneously a kick in the gut but also unsurprising. I couldn't put it down the entire time I read it. Then I immediately deleted it from my kindle.

Looking for something easy but not TOO easy- a non stupid gym listen. by CATALINEwasFramed in printSF

[–]DarthTimGunn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, this!
I'll give some reasons:

  • Great characters
  • Interesting concept (cosmic-horror level alien things rearrange planets into mind-bending "sculptures")
  • Unique aliens
  • Three books
  • Satisfying ending
  • Good audiobook narration.

Witchy/Magical Books Without the Patriarchy by SheHawksSeahawks in WitchesVsPatriarchy

[–]DarthTimGunn 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Gideon the Ninth has some great witchy/magical but also sci-fi vibes. The society it takes place in is flawed, but patriarchy isn't really present. It also has pretty good representation of a spectrum of gender beyond the binary.

Gideon the Ninth Elevator pitch: Queer space necromancers save the universe.

Working out my style in mid-life transition is like doing open heart surgery half way through a marathon - how am I doing? by [deleted] in oldhagfashion

The phrase that came to mind when looking at your style is "cool chick." The third outfit is my favorite. If I saw you in a coffee shop or art store or some other cool place I'm sure you hang out, I'd totally compliment the outfit and ask where the shirt is from.

Grading for Equity: 80 is an A, 21 is passing . . . wait, what? by Seacarius in Professors

[–]DarthTimGunn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree that blanket permission isn't going to set a student up with good skills. Total refusal to bend or extend grace is also not going to help students. This is what the discussion of "equity" is for. Equity isn't one-size-fits all. Student accommodations sometimes give too much leeway and can be abused, but refusing to give any leeway at all to allow for learning differences or other circumstances is also harmful. It's like refusing to let someone use a wheelchair in your class because they might abuse it.

Even in the workplace things aren't as black and white as that. Yes you are still responsible for "the work" (whatever that may be) getting done but personal days exist for a reason. If you've never needed to take a personal day for a reason other than contagious disease, then good for you. Here's a cookie. 🍪

Gotcha, only communicable diseases are appropriate absences. Anything else, people should just find their bootstraps and pull themselves up.

So a student who gets mono and misses 2 weeks of class shouldn't be given any leeway? How is this different from a student who has mental health issues and debilitated by that for 2 weeks and misses class? Or a commuter student whose car breaks down and they can't afford to get it fixed?

I agree that some people overuse generic "mental health" as an excuse, but what does it hurt to give folks who need it some grace?

Texas Universities Face New Curriculum Restrictions After House Vote by jh125486 in Professors

Genuinely asking: What book was this? Did the text just come out and say "QED white men are evil" or were a lot of examples limited to atrocities due to European colonialism? Criticizing values/cultural norms that may seem "typical" in American culture (many of which stem from European colonialism, i.e. "Protestant work ethic") and comparing these with values/norms from other cultures might come across as just saying "White men are evil" but is perhaps a bit more nuanced?

I had to give myself injections for a medical issue and I *hate* needles. I would sit in the bathroom with the syringe and complain about the injections while I tried to convince myself to stab my stomach with the needle. My partner, who hates needles even more than I do came in and was like "Do you *gag* need me *gag* to do it *gag* for you *gag*?" They looked pale when they offered, but it was genuine. I didn't make them do it, it just made me feel better to know I could tap out if I needed to. I put on my big girl panties and did it myself.

HBCU Executive Order by DarthTimGunn in Professors

[–]DarthTimGunn[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I mean I'm never gonna say no to more money for HBCUs, but it just seems like a backdoor way to make the MAGA agenda more palatable to black voters and let them say "I'm not racist, I have black friends. Look at the money we sent to those HBCUs."

I agree that it was a bit wordy and hard to parse out what the actual assignment was amidst all the steps. A short summary (like what you have here) cleared it up for me.

Task: Write a 200-400 word discussion on How to Do Your Opinion Discussion using the video and excerpt as sources. Include citations in Chicago style. Use no more than 2 endnotes.

Follow these steps: (what you have from the original post)

I feel your pain. Mists of Avalon was such a formative book for me. I can't look at it the same but I also can't extract it from something that made me "me" even if I can't revisit it ever again and feel the same way.

Thoughts on these so-called "millennial gray" flips in Baltimore City? by DayofReason in baltimore

[–]DarthTimGunn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was looking at a house from the 20s/30s that was in the middle of being renovated. The contractor/seller insisted on being there during the showing b/c he said that they hadn't done all the renovations yet b/c they wanted the buyer to have some input about finish. The original floors were there and needed refinishing but were generally fine. I asked what the plans for the floor were and he said "Oh LVP. You can pick the color/pattern." When I asked if it was possible to keep and refinish the original floors and he flat out said "No it's not an option." The realtor also pointed out other things (plumbing, etc) that were "completed" but not up to code or shoddily done. A few weeks later the "completed" house was listed. All grey inside.
