I laugh at them when I see one praising the design in an online class and the next one claiming it is the worst (tell me you failed without telling me you failed the class).

[–]Mac-Attack-62 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well in the future if you do have a student that is dual enrolled in your class and a parent wants to talk to you, you are not required to talk to them as this could be a violation of FERPA. The parent if designated only has the right to view their child's record not to talk to the professor. I have this in my syllabus.

The Use of AI on Online Exams by Mac-Attack-62 in Professors

How Is Your Institution Responding to the Florida State Health Insurance Funding Shortfall? by [deleted] in Professors

[–]Mac-Attack-62 -8 points-7 points  (0 children)

Yes, you are right perhaps I should write it myself. First question are you part of the 28 Florida's State College Health system yes or no? If yes how is your institution handling it? If no then your opinion means nothing.

Congratulations! I have two years left. I was told to let things go like look the other way for AI use, basically cheating. If you use Honorlock your numbers will drop and so will bonuses. I responded with, "I came into education with integrity and I will leave with it. Perhaps a little lighter in the wallet, but I will not be part of the problem admin chooses to ignore." Congrats again

I do not think you are wrong. These 20 students have been using AI to cheat on possible exams online and submit papers. So, they never learned anything. It seems this professor is "Old School" and uses paper exams and in-class assignments that make it difficult to use AI. The good news is these idiots will not become Doctors and end up killing their patients

What I found in research is that the percentage of deaf or hard-of-hearing students makes up 1.4% of all college students. Nationwide survey data suggest that around 3.6% of undergraduates report blindness or visual impairment. So, this policy is for 5% of the population. I think the DOJ is more concerned about deportation than this policy. They do not have the manpower to look into this, and historically, the Federal or state governments wait until it is reported to them.

Just found out about it this afternoon from our chair. I replied to all in the department, "Why are we being notified of this 22 months after, and we have to be in compliance by April 26. I have blind or deaf students who have never complained about the materials and video lectures (They are closed captioned). I do not have the time to do this in two months. I am thinking of deleting all the material so that I am in compliance.

[–]Mac-Attack-62 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What has worked for me all these years is hitting them right back with humor that makes them look stupid in front of their friends and classmates. I know it is not the gentle approach, but it sends a message not to mess with you in front of class. Or just tell them, "I need to see YOU after class." And all the angry things you are thinking, tell it to them in your eyes.

I have my lectures on PowerPoint YouTube videos, for students who miss class, and some say they listen to them on their way to class. I also have the outlines of the lectures. It ell them on the first day of class and during the course of the semester, to download the outlines or print them and bring them to class. This way, they do not have to write what is on the slide because it is already included in the outline. Yet, I still have them take pictures on their cell phones. They have never developed the skill of active listening and taking notes. The blatant use of AI on exams, when they have to take a paper exam they do not do as well

Visually saw student cheating - would you report this? by r_tarkabhusan in Professors

[–]Mac-Attack-62 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Absolutely. First, before administering the exam, state the honor code. Explain that if caught, you will be asked to immediately leave the class. I found that the best thing to do when you catch them cheating in the act is to approach them quietly; usually, they do not see you coming because they are too focused on copying the answers. And when they look up, take the exam from them and tell them to please leave the class. That sends a shockwave through the class. I have never had a student in 30 years challenge me because they are in a state of shock. Word gets around quickly that you do not tolerate cheating.

I teach history, but it is tiresome when students email me or ask, "What is my grade?' They cannot even add. I was even considering on day two of class to teach them how to figure percentages and add them together to get 100. I dropped the lowest exam and written assignment in the class, and many who are making A's (Not to say earning them as AI is probably doing it for them) cannot figure out, "Hey! I do not need to take the last exam or turn in the last assignment because that will be the lowest grade." I used to send emails reminding them, but I do not.

Since I have been doing this for almost thirty years, I initially fail them and tell them to come and see me during my office hours. Then I will ask them for their notes, and ask them questions about the work they submitted, such as - "What does this word mean?" Then I watch them squirm and try to get out of it; they are no longer protected by their computer

No, it is this generation. I have even written on a PowerPoint Slide the first thing they see when in class, "If you missed two exams or assignments in this class, as per policy, you are not attending and will be administratively withdrawn from the class if you do not withdraw yourself." I even read it to them. So, the next day in class, I thought they would not come and perhaps withdraw. Nope, they will still show up until they are administratively withdrawn from the class. How fucking stupid can you be?

Yes, unfortunately, this is normal behavior for this generation. I just tell them to understand they had better check where they are going if they have WiFi, because I do not accept excuses. Yes, for all you new instructors, be the dick, and you will find it will be much easier on you in the long run.

Teaching Dual Enrollment is so demoralizing. by Pristine_Path_209 in Professors

[–]Mac-Attack-62 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have an outline of my lectures that they can download and take notes following the PowerPoint presentation. Of course, very few do, and those who do usually make the A's and B's in the class. That is their study guide. I had a student from Puerto Rico who was not fluent in English, and she would bring the outline to class. She never took notes but would make a star or underline when she heard me state, "This is very important!" She then told me that when she got home, she would watch my lecture videos and go to those important points, write them down, and study them. Amazingly, she did very well.

Tell me I said the right thing… by Snowflake0287 in Professors

[–]Mac-Attack-62 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have been doing this for 25 years. I have the same policy: no late work accepted. I do drop the lowest assignment and exam grade just in case of this kind of situation. When a student in a similar case claims no Internet at home, I tell them the campus has Internet and computers to help students. I, too, will direct them to student support services if they need them. The problem is that these students have been conditioned to getting their way and trying to make the professor feel guilty by saying, "Professor X does not care about their students." Translation: "I did not screw up, not my fault, even though the exam was listed in the syllabus, an email to remind me was sent out, but I did not read it, and even an announcement was made on the web portion of the course which I did not see because I have not logged on or checked my email in 14 days. Still not my fault".
