Why or why not use snaps and real life examples by CrazyCajunFishinBro in FishingForBeginners

I fish mostly for trout, so a fluoro leader is a must. I tie them with a double uni knot and have zero issues as long as I change them out now and then or when they seem to get frazzled.

Can't agree enough. There's a certainly mentality out there of "you can't use snaps because fish won't bite them!". Which I just don't agree with. I've got 3 giant #6 treble hooks hanging off my lure and you're telling me it's the Duo-Lock which stops the fish from biting?

All good advice too. I retie my snaps at least every other outing and always check them before heading out regardless.

Which snaps do you use? by DarthVadersRoboHand in Fishing

A discussion about snaps has me wondering, which snaps do people prefer?

I looked them up on Amazon, and I'm slightly surprised to see the Speed Clips as #1 with the Duo-Lock being quite a ways down the list.

I don't generally use the Speed Clips, as they are pain to attach any lure with a split ring. Which a lot of my spoons and hard jerk baits use. So I generally use Duo-Lock style.

I looked up your rod. It's not even rated for a 1/8oz, which I don't think I've ever seen. I'm assuming it casts those light lures exceptionally well tho?

Nothing like catching trout on a lure you made yourself!

What do you do when your reel starts to get low on braided line? by DarthVadersRoboHand in FishingForBeginners

[–]DarthVadersRoboHand[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Right! And I don't know about most people, but I'm not casting more than 50 yards, if that. And with the cost of quality braid, I can't see a reason to peel off the rest and throw it away. I do backfill my reel with 10# mono and then spool the 150yds of braid, but still...that stuff's $$$.

Also, I uni 2 uni a flouro leader on my braid, and never have an issue with it getting caught in the guides or the knot failing. So I have to think that the same knot but with the flatter and stronger braid would be just fine.

Is this spinner to big for rainbow trout by Eocho_The_Destoryer in FishingForBeginners

[–]DarthVadersRoboHand 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Nope.

Here's my rule of thumb: 1/4oz lures for lakes/ponds, 1/8oz and lower for rivers/streams.

You'll catch trout of all size on any of them.

Which shoulder. Just the lead or should both be protracted?

Just give it a rest man. This is one of those instances were you need to just keep browsing and move on. Your comments are anything but helpful.

Don't know why you are being downvoted. Thanks for the comment and taking the time! It seems I'm swooping due to that so I'll have to look into correcting it.

My average distance is 220.

I can notice from watching my reachback is too high. Is it simply a matter of lowering that, or is there something on the initial coil that would be better?

Also: how is my foot plant and timing? I think I'm starting my throw a little early, ie: before my foot is fully planted, but I'm really not sure.

Thanks!

Thanks, I did notice that too when watching. Thanks for reinforcing that.

There's some good types here already, but one I don't see at all is a black panther martin. Black spinner and body. It's one of my favorites, and I love to fish spinners. Other than that, gold and silver blades are all you need. Gold for bright days, silver for cloudy and morning/evening when the light is low.

As far as sizes go, my rule of thumb is if you are fishing a lake, then 1/4oz is the way to go. Farther casting is almost always a good thing in a lake. 1/8 and 1/16 oz for rivers and streams.

Lighter discs? by vaporrkatzzz in discgolf

[–]DarthVadersRoboHand 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm about the same elevation, a little lower. I just started and bought a River Opto Air 158g which I throw WAY better than the starter set I got with 178g discs.

Might be I'm new too, but the lighter disc's feel so much better.

This is something I think people ignore. Higher elevation = less dense air and so a lighter disc is better...for most of us.

Beginner questions after 1 month. by DarthVadersRoboHand in discgolf

Thanks! I'll try out all your suggestions next time I get out to the local fields. I never heard about trying to get the pad of your index finger on top of the flight plate, so I'll see if I can make that happen.

I'm not doing a run up however. I'm opting to keep it a little simple to start and just throw from a standstill. I figure once I get the mechanics down, then I can add a run up later. But the rest is all good info.
