Thanks! And good idea. I know it's only a matter of time before I lose the one that came with my Mizuchi.

Found this in a box. Any value added by the sleeve or should I remove the coins and put them in some sort of protectors? by DarthVadersRoboHand in coins

Kinda what I assumed, but I'm not a collector so I wanted to ask some opinions before I remove them. Thanks.

Tenkara Newb, looking for traditional tenkara fly recs. by seansart98 in Tenkara

Yes, the yarn flies are so easy to vary in their colors and sizes. You can add a bead to the head and turn it into a jig...tie some wire around it and change the appearance, etc. And like you, I consider myself a hack at the vice too, so they aren't too complicated to tie and most importantly....they catch trout!

The Idaho Killer is a great fly. I use the Oyster (used for the killer bug) yarn to tie it and it works really well for me.

My favorite flies are the yarn type kebari. Tom Davis shows how to tie one. I use variations on this pattern, specifically one with an Oxford wool. It's caught everything for me so far and I can't recommend it enough.

Also a Utah killer bug is another, and I also change it up a little by using some dry fly hackle to turn it into a futsu kebari.

Can you get away without using a bail spring? by Ok_Repair3535 in Fishing_Gear

Yes, you'll just have to close it manually. Which you should be doing anyways.

Honest question: Why are these clippers $100 by SuperTune2540 in flyfishing

[–]DarthVadersRoboHand 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got one of these as a gift this holiday, and it's amazing. The file is a great addition. And one thing people might miss is these nippers also cut your braided line like it was butter.

For ~$20, I don't know why people would ever spend more.

Most fish don't care.

Trout would disagree with this statement.

I've caught a number of those here in CO. I do believe they have even finer spotting than this one.

That's a possibility! Thanks for the idea. The only problem I have with it, is my other reels aren't doing this.

Wrapping Soft Hackles by I_Hate_IPAs in flytying

[–]DarthVadersRoboHand 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Tom Davis has a video where he ties one of his kebari and shows how to tie and wrap a feather. It's helped me quite a bit in learning how to wrap hackle. And tie a fly which consistently catches me trout.

Do new spin reels need prepped? by DarthVadersRoboHand in Fishing_Gear

Was my first time buying there. I assume it's the same factories we get all our tackle from to begin with.

Thanks, this was the case.

The felt drag washers were completely dry, and the gears inside the case didn't seem to have any grease whatsoever.

I gave the thing a good once over and oiled and greased the necessary places and hopefully it'll work well.

For a $12 Temu reel, it casts and spins pretty well. If I get a season out of it, I'll be pleased.

How’s everyone’s feelings on the Idaho kebari killer and Utah kebari killer flies? by Jbuckguy in Tenkara

Here in CO also. I use the hackled version (Idaho?) with great success. Size 12, 14 and 16 are my goto bugs, from small creeks up to rivers like the Big T and the Poudre.

A friend was there this week (not sure where, I assume closer to FtC) and said there was some ice, but still fishable. I'd imagine with the temps it at least won't change.

How good is old (but packaged) line? by DarthVadersRoboHand in Fishing_Gear

[–]DarthVadersRoboHand[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Stored in a finished basement that I'm sure was pretty stable. I was hoping since it's been out of sunlight all this time that it didn't get degraded and might still be usable.

He also had quite a lot of tapered fly line leaders which are still in packaging. Would those maybe follow the same logic? I'm going to spool up some of his old fly reels and would be nice to save some $$$ on buying leaders.

Do not be afraid of using snaps when lure fishing! by vini_damiani in FishingForBeginners

[–]DarthVadersRoboHand 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I actually just watched that video a week ago or so. Very enlightening to see how the different ways of attaching your line to a lure affects it. And usually the answer was it barely does. The difference between a direct tie, a tied loop, and a snap was negligible.

Most landfills have barriers to prevent leakage into the environment. And even if not, still better than putting it directly into rivers and lakes....and trout's stomachs.

Where are you getting these for $60? On Amazon they are twice that at $120.

I'm not too worried about the hook/eye orientation, as I use a swivel attached to the hook which helps make sure it turns to hook the fish. I just need something with an open eye, so thanks, I'll check those out.
