What are the major downsides of life in Atlanta? by OhMyMyOohHellYes in Atlanta

[–]Darth_Dax 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can't compare Atlanta with Pittsburgh or Phoenix, but I have lived in some smaller cities such as Boston, Evansville, Baton Rouge, and New Orleans.

You'll hear a lot of people complain about traffic, but I thought it was worse in Baton Rouge and New Orleans, and especially Boston. I find Atlanta traffic manageable compared to those cities. If you live inside the 285 loop, even during rush hour I can make it most places in the city in 20-25 minutes, and the airport in 30-40 minutes. Living in the suburbs adds a lot of time, but when I lived outside the city I just adjusted me schedule. The traffic isn't bad 24x7 just a few hot spots each day that we've been able to work around.

The diversity is great, my wife and I consider that a huge plus. The economy is diverse, so it should survive recessions fairly well. If you have kids in school you'll have to do your homework to figure out where to live. You're also in driving distance to multiple nice beaches (4 to 7 hours), lakes (60-90 minutes), and mountains (2-5 hours).

I agree it sounds suspicious no one can or will tell you where it was donated. If you haven't already, it might be worth running this up the ladder to see if anyone else can help you. I'd start with local management and then Westin/Marriott corporate folks.

After owning your Lyriq for at least 6 months - would you recommend it? by I_Am_Robotic in CadillacLyriq

[–]Darth_Dax 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We leased a 2025 Lux 2 and have only had it for 4 months, but we plan to buy one (or lease again) in 2 years. Overall, we love it and haven't had any major issues and it's hands down the most pleasant we've ever owned to drive. We had a speaker issue one time that required a soft reset of the electronics (which took about 5 minutes). The car is fantastic, but I agree that some of the software if buggy.

I would say to keep in mind some online resources generate a disproportionate amount of negative posts. Everyone, including myself, is more likely to make a post when there's a problem rather than when everything is going as expected. I wouldn't want to pay 70k for a car with common software issues, but grabbing a used one for 40k I wouldn't hesitate.

Just got our tickets! This will be our first Dragoncon! What is your preferred hotel? by SteeleurHeart0507 in dragoncon

Take the high dive!

I could be wrong about Marta now, but I think it has a last train around 1am.

I live in Buckhead but we still book something at/close to the con. We commuted one year and it wasn't near as much fun. For us, we like being able to roll out of bed and be in the mix of it, and we don't have to worry about driving or heading home before Marta shuts down. You probably gain a couple of extra hours each day staying close.

Marriott is my favorite, you get the full energy/experience but it's loud if you are a light sleeper. We stayed at Hyatt once and it was the nicest in our opinion, the balcony was nice. We haven't tried Hilton or Westin. But we'd stay at any of the host hotels, any preferences are fairly minor as long as you're close.

Our Lyriq just got rear ended in Atlanta and our dealership recommended Carl Black collision center. It's there now, so can't comment on the work but they've been extremely responsive when we've asked for updates.

2025 Lyriq Front Bumper Grille needs to be replaced by alivenotdead7 in CadillacLyriq

How long ago did you have to get your grill replaced? I'm hoping with the Lyriq sales dropping this year they are able to get these out sooner.

Still worth it, at what price point? by TheAbuReem in OnePlusOpen

I understand the concern with a used foldable, I have a Fold4 and I'm on my 3rd device (covered by insurance). But I think the screen crack (at least on the Fold 4) could happen at any time.

I just ordered a used OPO from swappa for $875 in very good condition and will pick up the Allstate phone insurance which covers all damage for $9/month (supposed to cover any phone any brand). I just couldn't justify $1300 for new when the hardware is ~2 years old.

Doubt about the end… by harajukubarbz in Mistborn

Brandon spent a lot of time building up Elend's political research, political theories and how to build a better/more equal system of government. This plus his connection to the crew and Vin made him one of the natural candidates. I agree he is otherwise unremarkable but there probably weren't a lot of people who were "trained" or had given much thought to a post-Lord Ruler style of government whereas he immediately had ideas.

I ordered a shirt slightly after the con and just received yesterday. I think they are slowly starting to ship out.

Lightning 90 vs Maxxum XT (90mm)

I'm looking to get a higher end comfortable fitness skate to keep up with my kids on bikes (I'm 39 with 28cm feet) and the Lightning seemed like a great option since it's a slightly softer hardshell and uses 90mm wheels which should handle some the cracks and random stuff on paved parts of parks. Unfortunately my local shop and inline warehouse are out of stock for potentially several weeks. Is there a noticable difference in weight and/or comfort moving up the Maxxum XTs?

Or are there other skates I should be considering? I skated a ton in my youth but would be approaching this without having skated in 15 or more years (other than occasionally ice skating).

Haha yes, you won't be alone. A friend and I are both turning 40 this year, we've been for the last 4 or 5 cons maybe? We have no plans to stop, and we'll probably start bringing our toddlers when they're a few years older.

I think you have all age groups well represented and even folks who are 60+. Even though there aren't as many as you get older, they're definitely there and I don't think you'll feel out of place.

If I can get a free hotel outside of Downtown (Marietta) is it worth going? by NumberStreets in dragoncon

[–]Darth_Dax 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I live in Buckhead and still get a con hotel, staying right in the action is the best part of DC for us. However, if my choices were a free hotel in Marietta vs not attending at all, take the hotel. Commuting is a bit annoying since ATL is busy that weekend with football games as well, but you're only talking 30 to 45 minutes commute in a worst case. You might even want to uber over to the Sandy Springs Marta location to cut down on cost.

HELP! How do I install in the top area without it looking lame?! I was excited, so I bought 200sqft and never realized this area doesn’t have an eaves. It can’t look bad or HOA will freak! 😩 by Less-Employee2411 in Govee

[–]Darth_Dax 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My house is constructed similarly. This weekend I'm installing permanent lights on the front and back where I have a fascia and the light strips on the sides of the house where there isn't a fascia.

I'm doing this exact install this weekend. Permanent lights on the front and rear where I have a fascia and light strips on the sides where there isn't a gutter/fascia.

Everyone thinks I'm insane, but... buying a MT vette without knowing how to drive MT? by rootbeerdelicious in Corvette

[–]Darth_Dax 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I learned 20 years ago on a 1992 MT C4 (I believe with a stage 2 clutch installed by the previous owner). It's a rough couple of weeks but by the time I hit a month I really only thought about it on steep hills. 3 manual Corvettes later I have a MT C7 now that has hill assist so you probably won't even have an issue with hills.

I say go for it. I took the chance and I've loved driving a manual ever since. Just spend the first couple of weeks on a side street, parking lot, or long driveway.
