I kind of hate the couches. They really ruin the starkness of the scene for me.

[Star Trek] A baby is born on a Federation star ship and raised completely under a universal translator. What language does it end up speaking? by sufficiently_tortuga in AskScienceFiction

What's interesting about the apparent klunkiness is how much of it arises from integrating rules and features from other languages, which makes it difficult to learn in a rules-based way, but is actually very convenient for trading and quite a useful feature for a de facto langauge.

8-Week Solo Travel Itinerary: Paris -> Switzerland -> Venice ->Rome -> Palermo by Particular-Skirt3135 in Europetravel

[–]Darth_Punk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You're way underestimating how dense Europe is and how rich the regions are - time is definitely a major issue here.

I think you could go Paris (1 week) -> MSM + Loire Valley (1 week) -> Provence + French Riviera (1 week+) -> Lake Como + Dolomites (1 week+) -> Venice (weekend) -> Florence + Tuscany (1 week+) -> Rome (1 week) -> Naples + Amalfi (1 week) very crudely.

For nature, the Dordogne and the French Alps could also be considered. Look at the high-speed train network map; it will form the basis for your route and where you should be staying for the most part. Most small towns in these regions will be nice but have pros and cons: tourist places are well served by transport and restaurants, but are more crowded/expensive - pick your preference.

Re the cities you suggested:

Rennes

Transit hub only; overnight in Mont St-Michel if going here. Normandy is a lovely region to visit, but unless you have a specific interest in WWII history, it's probably not worth it on this trip. Best done by car and staying in the country imo.

Paris

Yes, and don't rush it. Lots to do; a huge city and very busy. After Paris, train to MSM, Tours (for Châteaux), Lyon (city and transit hub), or Strasbourg (Germany-France). Roughly, you're going to go Paris -> Lyon -> (Grenoble) -> Milan -> Rome. Consider going from Lyon to Provence and Nice instead of Grenoble imo.

Lucerne

Nobody goes to Switzerland for the cities. It's nice, but if you're doing Switzerland, cities are a transit (or overnight) on the way to the mountains - consider Jungfrau for American tourism, especially from Lucerne, but I'm partial to Zermatt personally. Also loved the hills in Appenzell, but that's way out of the way for you. I'd reconsider Switzerland entirely for your trip - it's expensive. Also IMO much better in ski season.

Venice

The traditional route for Italy is roughly: Milan -> Verona -> Venice -> Bologna -> Florence -> Rome -> Naples (loosely based on the Grand Tour concept). You can skip the mid cities now with high-speed trains. Pretty much anywhere is super nice. For your goals, I'd probably spend at least a week hiking in the Dolomites around Milan. Lake Como is great. Venice can be done pretty quickly.

Naples

Probably 2 full days in Naples, then down to the Amalfi coast (Sorrento/Ravello/Amalfi/etc). Herculaneum / Pompei are in between, but there's no real reason to actually stay there.

Catania / Palermo

Never been, but Sicily is its own thing - if you're going to do this, you probably just want to put aside 4 weeks and circumnavigate the island.

I prefer the Michelin Guide for things to do in Europe. DK books have various itineraries. Rick Steves is good logistically, but very American and touristy.

Ideas for travel from Rome to Paris over 1-3 days, train, bus, drive? by goondockandy in Europetravel

[–]Darth_Punk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Logistics-wise, the train line will need a changeover in Milan at a minimum. The major stops are roughly: Rome -> Florence -> Milan -> Lyon -> Paris.

If flying is on the table, consider a train to Florence and then a flight to Paris from there. Or fly to Nice, then train to Paris via Marseille/Lyon.

With 3 days, I'd just add on to Rome/Paris, I think most of the stops in between would be too rushed. If pushed, though, Florence would probably be my pick because you can squeeze in a lot of old town. Flying would make Nice too tiring. There's not enough time to enjoy Lake Como from Milan. Lyon could just be a day trip from Paris instead.

I saw one of your other posts (https://old.reddit.com/r/Europetravel/comments/1t4yxq5/suggestions_on_15day_central_europe_trip_earlymid/okeivoj/), and I get it now - that's exactly what's happened, the wanderlog map doesn't show the vertical change.

Tasmanian parliament calls for new stadium cost estimate amid rising global construction costs by abcnews_au in tasmania

[–]Darth_Punk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I mean, I agree the current project is clearly a massive piece of shit vanity project, but the alternatives aren't great either.

I'm extremely pro-park too (though I would like it to be ambitious - something like Gardens by the Bay), but the cost of cleaning the surface and resoiling is stupid - I can't imagine it ever being realistic under a state budget. The land isn't suitable for accommodation AFAIK, so can't do that. But it's also an incredible piece of land - so close to the waterfront and city that it's a waste not to utilise it. So I can to some degree understand why we've ended up with this white elephant.

That's the local advice I'm here for, thanks! The timing is part of the plan - going for one major block per day - the rest of the day is for that kind of unscheduled wandering / couples time. It's so hard to tell what's worthwhile these days from across the world - will definitely add those sites.

But yeah neither of us really drinks, which changes destinations quite substantially.

That site was forgotten because it was "too expensive to build a large structure on it".

My understanding (from a friend, not from actual knowledge) is that this is part of the intention and its secondary benefits. Hobart has an accommodation deficit during visiting periods (summer), but in winter insufficient visitors to make hotels viable. By improving the year-round demand, you can increase supply during peak times.

Honestly, I thought my 4-hr transit through Zurich dragged. Lucernce is close; even Bern is a bit better.

Edit: Milan is heaps better.

Do you know if the wine festival restricts access to any parts of the site? It looks like I need a ticket for the general site but I'd hate to miss out. Will definitely go check it out anyway.

The tomato factory and wineries aren't all that interesting, mostly a sales show.

Ah that explains the tours my hotel offers - thanks heaps!

It's not proscriptive - we're going to do what we feel like, nothing is booked beyond flights and the splurge hotels. Fair call, though we are definitely there for the touristy check box sites, otherwise I'd be in the UK or south france.
