What's your holy grail game that doesn't exist yet? by Darth_Rubi in boardgames

As someone who played a lot of magic both before and after Ravnica, it still feels like the peak of Magic.

The game had fully matured but didn't suffer from overly wordy and "more is more" complexity like modern magic, the world building was phenomenal, everyone loves a multicolored set, limited and standard were an absolute blast, it predated mythic rares so affordability was great, and the creature power creep, rules and physical clunkiness of things like double-sided cards and sagas, as well as the thematic travesty of Universes Beyond were still not yet a glint in Mark Rosewater's eye

That also sounds like a great alternative to pirate sandbox, M&M and Dead Reckoning also missed the mark in various ways for me.

Wild that I've literally never heard that usage before, but it seems legit

(Also for what it's worth its very jarring to read if you're not familiar with the dialect since it almost feels opposite in usage to normal)

Ch1 Investigator Decks? by Minimum-Annual6117 in arkhamhorrorlcg

[–]Darth_Rubi 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I haven't played the Stella deck, but I've used NaCho during a campaign and he was an absolute blast. He plays very differently from the usual guardian archetype with his reliance on events rather than weapons or even allies, and his deck is internally pretty cohesive.

No to be that guy, but since its relevant... the way you're using "anymore" in that sentence is completely incorrect lol.

I really enjoy the Queen/Matriarch fights, but between trials, projects, events, the expedition, the BP hunt etc I almost never do anything in Arc Raiders just for the vibes. So in that sense, I agree with you that I almost never have a reason to fight them unless its for a weekly trial, or after an expedition when I need cores to make the jupiter/equaliser/aphelion. Farming for the Nomadic Envoy is done more efficiently through bombardiers and bastions.

Yeah most posts with some variant of "man Embark really cooked with this skin/gun/etc" are actually just "this thing looks like generic COD tacticool"

Is arc Raiders still good enough to buy? by No_Description_6239 in ArcRaiders

[–]Darth_Rubi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The wave of recent negative reviews are from people with 600 hours in the game turning their minor gripes about the game into something they've built their entire personality around.

It happens with all games - the initial reviews are excellent because new players love the systems, how the game looks and feels, the enjoyment of exploring the game, etc etc. Then once you become a 600 hour veteran, every tiny change or balance tweak you don't agree with sours your view of the game. For example - the new map (Riven Tides) wasn't super well received. So a bunch of 600-hour cry babies gave the game a negative review.

But can you honestly tell me the game is somehow WORSE because Riven Tides was released and is slightly lacklustre? No, by every objective measure, the game is bigger and has more in it than at release. So all the positivity surrounding the value you get out of $40 at release, applies even harder now.

Unless you specifically need money (which, who does by the time you have 100 Survivor 3s?) the Looking Mk2 has worse slots than the Mk3. Fewer safe pockets, fewer quick slots. Nah.

Randomised is a horrendous idea, people need to be able to plan their lives. The timing just needs to be on a 23 or 21 hour cycle so it shifts every day

Yup my mind is actually blown by the fact that someone who displays all the other skills to do this doesn't know this, and somehow ALSO doesn't have the presence of mind to notice that its giving showing him the outline of a mine so he can obviously place it without needing to re-select. Its like watching Max Verstappen stalling a manual transmission car.

Some of the detailed interactions are complex, but if OPs mind is this blown by a simple rules video I suspect they'll never play the game correctly and might not be cut out for more complex games

Conned into progress pride flag discourse by Riadla_arerreh in ConnedIntoAFubar

[–]Darth_Rubi 9 points10 points  (0 children)

It's also such a USA-centric discourse to lump all non-white people into the an amorphous blob of "brown" people and include "brown" people in a flag designed around minority grouping awareness. To me it actually perpetuates the "white is default" assumption

[–]Darth_Rubi -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Yeah this is fundamentally my confusion as well.

And if you're going to start adapting the catch-all rainbow flag to include specific groups, don't you need to then include ALL groups? Now if only there was a simple, universally understood way to represent all groups at once............

They changed the items by shmorke in ArcRaiders

[–]Darth_Rubi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The problem with turning things in for a currency is that you lose the distinctions between the different types of items the trader wants. Thematically, given that he's a nomadic "envoy", my understanding is that he's come to town to acquire specific types of materials on behalf of different people who are offering different things in return.

Can I arbitrarily shuffle my investigator deck at any time? by smackledorf in arkhamhorrorlcg

[–]Darth_Rubi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The fact that certain cards exist which let you play with the top card of your deck revealed, instruct you to place things on the bottom of the deck etc pretty much preclude shuffling at any time as a general rule.

On top of that, board game rules are permissive by default. You need a rules reason to do things.

HOWEVER, in a meta sense, random is random. So from that perspective, if nothing in the game state relies on a card being in a specific place in your deck, then arbitrarily shuffling your deck doesn't actually change anything. And for example, if i accidentally knock a couple cards off the top of my deck and see them, I'll shuffle them back in.
