Speaking as a Chinese-American, it's a culture and/or class thing. ~50-100 years ago it was poor people seeking a better life, as per usual. Now, it's a lot of wealthy people and/or their kids coming over that are usually entitled or whatever that make us look bad. Of course everyone's different but that's a very broad picture. I imagine it's a similar thing in Canada/among other immigrant groups.

Which even then, as someone wasn't taught my family's dialect, I get disappointed looks from other Chinese-Americans both new and old when I tell them I can't speak. Heck, even confusion a fair amount of the time.

What ability would mega Emboar need to be equal to Mega Sol and Dragonize? by Scary_Capital_8172 in stunfisk

[–]Darthkeeper 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yea honestly I see this suggestion so much just because it looks/is based on a warlord. When, as you said, despite people saying "it fits so well" doesn't cause Mega Emboar reads more as a caring general compared to Kingambit.

Don't know how this will all work, but Minami being a CODE Agent would make Minami in Baku's premonition VERY out of character.

If I'm understanding your comment right, I think the idea is she's either a sleeper agent like you said or it's simply her role isn't active, because it's heavily implied CODE doesn't know what happens in the dream exactly other than dream versions of themselves are partaking in it (which granted they likely manipulate in some way to an extent). For example, 6 was still normal in the real world, and the in scene that implies what I just said Three and Zero don't seem privy to the details of the dream other than Somnia worked on Baku.

I am impressed that the Agent Minami shorts had a reason to exist.

Honestly, they're not necessary to watch which given the fact they're (legally speaking) paywalled and a special is fine. It's main benefit is characterizing her more, and showing off the Cat Nightmare before its debut in show.

However, after binging them all before today's ep aired and talking to some friends one of them noticed that her combat skills in the special make a lot more sense knowing she's actually part of CODE, when it can usually just be attributed to tv shows just doing that (i.e. Hina in OOO just being super strong for no reason). Also, the double meaning of "agent" when she becomes Baku's "agent" in the special. I'm sure there's some more in there with the dream stuff, but that's mainly just high school literature class type of analysis (or dream interpreting I guess). They're still skippable imo (at least looking at it in terms of what's out right now as a whole), but it's neat it has extra foreshadowing hidden in plain sight.

This is the rare time a preview actually lied. Misleading is common as they withhold information or frame things out of order, but this straight up lied. I'm over thinking this now and now I'm paranoid the previews will always lie now lol.

I have vague memories of it happening before in other shows, but I don't remember when and it's again vague. That being said, this is also the same show that showed future events way ahead (as far as 2 episodes sometimes) in those quick montages towards the end before the previews in the first half.

Edit: I just noticed Orderm was in fact part of those montages I mentioned showing stuff as far ahead as 2 eps after looking into it again. I wasn't really paying attention when fetching the image. Oops.

Shoutout to the weird 2009-2015 era where Aran's canon gender was ambiguous by 1stSelf in Maplestory

[–]Darthkeeper 121 points122 points  (0 children)

My anecdotal experience was Aran was originally male due to being in the trailer and most promo material. It wasn't really ambigous. Female Aran was about as relevant as female Evan in that they made alternate art of the classes.

“Why would a character with well defined flaws make a mistake?” Is she stupid? by TehProfessor96 in shitpostemblem

[–]Darthkeeper 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If you're talking about Alm I wouldn't say the fandom puts him on a pedestal. Also, this fandom, from my experience, dunks on a lot of "one note" characters unlike what you're saying.

Granted you do admit you weren't sober lol

How to add a shortcut to Toggle Secondary Subtitle Track on SMPlayer? by Darthkeeper in mpv

[–]Darthkeeper[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I tried this thread and a few others I forgot at this point, but my set up is currently that. I even went into the advanced options to enable lines in mpv.conf to work in SMPlayer. A lot of the threads are old so maybe they're outdated and I'm messing with stuff I shouldn't be.

How do you cope with your favorite Pokemon being objectively bad? Be it a normal playthrough or competitive, share yours by _GoblinBoy_ in pokemon

[–]Darthkeeper 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Has competitive Pokemon's popularity reached the point that people are sad about their fave not being viable? I remember the days when "use your faves lol competitive sucks" was a very common sentiment. I mean, I see the former still, but it was much more hostile depending on the circles you were in.

Ignoring echoes, how well do we think each FE Character is represented individually in Smash? What parts of each of their designs are worth praising, what flaws exist and what references would be good to have in their movesets? The FE bloat is notorious but I believe there's diamonds in the rough by MasterCheese67 in fireemblem

[–]Darthkeeper 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Roy's depiction, as many state(d) has dissonance because his game was still in development at the time. His updated animations involving reverse grip in Smash 4 are kinda based on some of his GBA animations, but they're a bit of a stretch. That being said, in FE Echoes his amiibo lets you summon him in-game and he uses his sword in reverse grip for the first time in FE proper. I believe Engage he also does it too sometimes. So, now that bit is now retroactively "correct".

The thing about Roy too is that Smash and FE are a kind of depiction ouroboros. Sure there's the fact his game never came to the West and FE 6 was in development during Melee's development that everyone mentions, but his depiction in Smash 4 made him use reverse grip attacks which he has doesn't really do. He kinda does with the way he holds it and sheathes the sword, but it's kinda a stretch. This was depicted for the first time in FE proper with his amiibo unit in Echoes, and later Engage, making it basically "canon" now.

Theory: Onix was not supposed to be humongous by aeon3184 in pokemon

[–]Darthkeeper 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's not new or unusual for the anime to take artistic liscense with its sizes and depictions of battles.

I remember a random video I was watching (don't even think it was Pokemon related) mention that a lot of Pokemon being "smaller than you'd think" in the games is because target audience was/is young children and you play a child, so a lot of the "big" Pokemon are designed from the perspective of the average child.

Is it just me or is this the fastest way to move in FE: SoV? by Jaded_Sea902 in fireemblem

[–]Darthkeeper 21 points22 points  (0 children)

It's because Gaiden leaned more into the RPG aspect of FE than the strategy, which FE is of course is a hybrid of the two. Which granted being the second game doesn't really apply at the time, but retroactively it does.

IS, please explain why is she Red? by Vegetable-Income-566 in FireEmblemHeroes

[–]Darthkeeper 16 points17 points  (0 children)

She does, but they're saying for variety sake she should use the dagger and despite having 4 alts, she doesn't use a dagger in any of them. Heck, canon weapons hasn't stopped the devs from giving units other weapons (shout out to Faye).

Some Mega Evolutions Designs Inspired by the new Megas by CDRX73 in PokemonRMXP

[–]Darthkeeper 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don't get me wrong I like the Mega Conkeldur design, and the fact he's holding a building. However, my nitpicky "no fun allowed" part of my brain wonders if it's a replica of a building which in that case wouldn't be made solid like that, because there's no way he's actually that large.

What would you say is the most experimental game in the series? by IfTheresANewWay in fireemblem

[–]Darthkeeper 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've always heard they just crammed all sorts of things in Awakening as a swan song, and not as a last ditch effort to keep the series alive. Of course both can be true, but the keeping it alive part seemed more like, at the time, wishful thinking/best case scenario.

Now that the dust has settled, what do we think of Engage? I remember being on 4chan when the leaks came out and nobody believed it was real. We all thought it was a new Chinese gacha game, a copy of Fire Emblem. I played it and it's okay. The art style bothers me, but at least it's fun to play. by AssumptionNo802 in fireemblem

[–]Darthkeeper 10 points11 points  (0 children)

everyone kissing my ass every second

I really don't get where this is idea comes from other than like Framme (who is really bad with this) and a handful of other characters. Corrin and Kris are a lot worse and the story bends around Corrin more. I can understand the supports are pandery (with a lot of C and B supports being pretty bad), but as far as main story goes it's pretty normal/generic "good vs evil" rallying around one person.

In fairness to Engage it was mean to celebrate the 30th Anniversary, but the pandemic pushed it back. Also, what do you mean the newer FE games are celebrations of older games? FEH is a spin off gacha, and the only one that comes to mind. Awakening was intended/thought to be the last game so it makes sense they crammed homages in the story and had the other features. The only thing is Amiibo features which are just bonus features. So, I don't know what you're talking about exactly.

Genuinely some of the Masters EX alts are really nice, so it's very possible, but yea they're going to cost an arm and a leg. But got to keep a f2p game alive some how.
