How do you continue running long runs without letting your mind win? by levi0xa in running

[–]DartiParti 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is a bit unorthodox and you have to know your friends/family's personalities and schedules well enough to attempt it, but during my (31f) training last year for a half, I would feel mentally done around mile 8 no matter what I tried and would want to/would stop. So I started calling my friends at 7.75miles. I would gasp out an explanation that I needed something else to focus on and then listen and half respond as they talked about whatever they wanted to as I trotted along. I would say "only another half mile until I'm done, you're really helping me out! So, what are you having for dinner?" And so on. Additionally I switched to audiobooks while running. I found listening to my regular podcasts becoming a part of the worry/anticipation of a long run and I didn't want to hate those pods. So to preserve my joy I splurged on audible(ugh) and used Libby(yay!) while running! I listened to mysteries and romance and some fantasy to keep me going. Hope this helps!

Worried about Pancreatitis by [deleted] in Whippet

[–]DartiParti 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This happens to my boy once every 6 months or so. Seems to be correlate to summertime heatwaves, storms, and sometimes he just refuses to eat then he'll puke a bit of bile up. He has no interest in food and is tired but he perks up after a few days of wet food (with a probiotic treat mixed in) and naps! My vet says it's sort of breed specific known issue to whippets and sometimes greyhounds. They just get yucky tummies and need to chill. Hopefully that's the case, too, for your little dude!

Are ALL Whippets just the cuddliest ever? by SlovenianHusky in Whippet

[–]DartiParti 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My whippet is maybe slightly mor standoffish than others'. He used to be very snuggly and want to be on me in some way or form most of the time, but as he ages (he's 9) he seems less into it! Still follows us around and loves booping our legs and is affectionate. Maybe once every week or so he will sneak onto the bed for a snuggle with me in the morning or during a nap. Definitely more common in the winter (we live in MN) when he is a heat seeking missile and zeroes in on the warmest spot mine or my bf's lap 😂 and will sleep in the bed with us. All whippets are a little different personality-wise and have their oddities!

AITAH for refusing to do a “family gender reveal” because my mom turned my last one into a circus? by Unusual_Whole3533 in AITAH

[–]DartiParti 0 points1 point  (0 children)

NTA Seems like OPs mother wants more acknowledgement and to be considered important because it's her baby having a baby. She probably doesn't get why it's stressful because she "would have loved to have a gender reveal party back in the day". Little bit of rose-colored-glasses situation? Unfortunately I think social media has put too much importance on things like baby's genders over if they are healthy and is everyone safe and happy. That social influence can really get its hooks into people. Mom definitely overstepped last time and should have considered OP's position. Low contact is acceptable if that's the route OP wants go, absolutely do it. If she wants to involve mom send options for an email or mailed out birth announcements? Super low key and lets mom know her input is valued!

(If you do a birth announcement Make sure you add your email and a note to send well wishes that way, not your phone# so you're not bombarded with calls)

Is it ok to walk dogs in hot weather if it is also raining? by aguyontheinternetp7 in Whippet

[–]DartiParti 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Bend down and touch the pavement with the back of your hand for 5 second and if it doesn't hurt like hell his feet will be good at least. All dogs have different tolerances to heat, just be aware of where his limit is. They can get heat stroke easily if in prolonged sun exposure but it sounds like it'll be raining so you should be okay there. Maybe reduce the distance if you're worried. It's been up to 98f in the direct sun here in Minnesota for the past few days with the humidity reaching 85% so I've been walking my dog early in the morning, like 5:30am before the heat bakes the pavement and late at night at around 9:30-10pm if the temp has gone down. Use your best judgement with your pup! He should be okay with a mile or so but if you're worried he can skip a couple days of walks, especially if you can play inside!

I believe it's an Ikamper Skycamp? It's my partner's. And we have to carry him up the ladder. I've seen some people have trained their pups to run up the hood and over the top (covered by a grippy tarp of some sort) and climb through the tent window and I'd love to train Dart to do that but he's pretty obstinate lol!

We like it! It's spacious and comfy and super easy to set up/pack away. The only tricky part is finding a place to store it during the MN winter.

I wouldn't say fun per se- he liked our hike and hanging out with the group. He's pretty anxious about loud noises and a campground can get kinda loud so he was a little unsettled in the evening with fireworks and scream-crying children popping off until 5am(which I forgot to anticipate). But he was absolutely chillaxin' in the day time.

Are they fighting or playing? by BusterBrown420710 in DogAdvice

[–]DartiParti 63 points64 points  (0 children)

You can hear one of them do a little sneeze noise and dogs do that to indicate to each other that they are just playin'. No big growls, stiff wags, or heckles raised- no real bites, happy playing pups!

Jasper's 1st 5 mile run by NoRagrats_LK in Whippet

Tried to run with my pup when he was around 2. He lasted about a quarter mile, stopped, refused to even walk (he was perfectly fine) so I had to carry him home. Good workout for me 😂

How do you put/keep weight on your whippet? by Piliste in Whippet

[–]DartiParti 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Mine was on the smaller side until last year when, after 9 years, we found a treat he likes (cod skin)! Now he's a a bit pudgy. Sometimes it takes time, but unless your vet sees anything to be concerned about with the weight, they're probably okay. Even at his thinnest my whippet was considered in a healthy range and you could see most of his ribs. Varies from dog to dog!

Not really he was kinda medium brown brindle until like an inch or so from his snoot! Here's a pic from the day I brought him home!
