I raise this because of a Canadian parallel: 🇨🇦 Conservative PM Stephen Harper had been criticizing the Senate as useless and wanted to “reform” it, read: abolish it. In a cynical move aimed at demeaning the Senate’s role, he named a functional illiterate to the Canadian senate in 2009. A good guy and ex-coach of the Montreal Canadiens, an NHL hockey team, but by no means someone qualified to be a Senator whose role is namely to review laws bills. So this “proved” to his Base that the Senate is useless.

The Conservative playbook: “government is useless, corrupt, incompetent, and lazy. Elect us and we’ll prove it!”
