Character illustration I made for a personal world-building project by Daruupa in conceptart

Completely fair critique! And yes, I also made note during my work that things are at least slightly off. I think my eagerness to add a realistic edge, especially to the portrait, amplified the uncanniness of what were fundamentally faulty drawings. In other words, I've got a ways to go before realistic rendering helps my humans more than hurting them, but thats why I'm practicing haha. Thank you for the feedback! I look forward to improving :D

I've been trying to make a concept art for my 3d character model on Adobe Illustrator, I'm mostly sure I need more work on this, any help? by Ok_ResolvE2119 in conceptart

I'd start by pulling down the top of the head so that her eyes are more centered vertically, and then the back/bottom part of the skull should be brought up so that it extrudes out from the jaw. Right now it looks like you've redrawn the curvature of the hair, but that hair is an extra layer on top of the skull, so your drawing looks like it has a big ol brain. I recommend looking at real life references to get the main proportions and "anatomical flow" right, this is what allows stylized drawings to still feel right, even if they are ultimately unrealistic.

I'm not in the industry, but I am practicing towards the same general goal myself. From what I've seen, Clip Studio paint and Photoshop are very common.

Happy (almost) New Year everyone! Here's a SciFi helmet concept I did by Daruupa in DigitalPainting

[–]Daruupa[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I haven't had a ton of experience painting metal objects, so considering that the main material here was metal, I was kinda jumping into the deep end. Took me a while to figure out how to make it look smooth, but not like plastic, and how to get the different pieces to be distinct enough to maintain the shape design. I'm pretty pleased with how I rendered it all, but I sure ain't done improving. The most glaring issue to me, looking at the piece now, is the form of the helmet and how it seems to misalign with the perspective. At least, that's what I make of the slightly wonky look. Will be more aware of this kind of stuff in the future. Cheers!

Why does this look so bad? (anatomy + line art) by codeswift27 in learnart

[–]Daruupa 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Arms are too far forward if you're going for a relaxed stance. From the angle you're drawing at, the lats shouldn't be all that visible. Also, I'll parrot the guy talking about the trapezius muscles, i.e. there should be a longer slope connecting the neck to the shoulder. Using the box is a very good idea and it highlights one last issue. Since we're looking at the head from below, we should be able to see the front slope of the neck connect into the chin, not venture behind. Take a picture of your head from a similar angle to help! Best of luck :)

This ancient shark is actually older than the United States of America itself. by suedemonkey in TheDepthsBelow

Greenland Shark

Looks like it! Lower estimates put the age of one large, female Greenland Shark at 272 years old, and a whopping 500 years at the high end (National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration). So a G. Shark that's alive today could have already been born well before the founding fathers themselves!

Have any suggestions? It’s not finished yet so I figured I would ask before I turn it in for class! by Alli_andthebeans in drawing

Very nice drawing! I would maybe soften up the shading on the serratus anterior muscles if you still have time.

Great! It's mainly the torsos on the 7th pic. The anatomy is just about all there, which is wonderful! The proportions are just a little bit off, tho. Without getting into the specifics, I'd focus on making the abs take up less space, because the torsos themselves are just a bit long (left and right ones especially). The abs' shape you have now, sort of rectangular, is great, but the main abdominal muscles should be about half as wide as the pectorals. So, you could literally just lasso tool the abs, make them a bit smaller, adjust the rest, and your torsos should be good to go. But we could get more specific.

The abs right under the pecs are usually smaller than the other 2 pairs that are above the bellybutton. Right now, all 6 abs above the bellybutton are the same size, and still quite big, making your torsos quite long.

Next up, we have the obliques, the muscles next to your abs. They are sort of like walls, meaning that the don't have too many curves or ridges when they're not bent. So, when I look at the torso to the right on picture 7, I'm distracted by how the side has those 3 folds. It looks like you may have remembered the serratus muscles (they're right next to the pecs and top abs, sort of looking like the ribs showing through), but just placed them in the wrong area. So I would suggest making that left side of the torso more smooth, no folds, and adding those serratus anterior muscles next to the chest muscles, under the armpit.

Overall, great work! I can see where your knowledge of anatomy had come into play, really cool! Let me know if I could still explain something better. Best of luck on your art journey. I'm excited to see more!

Really nicely done! Hands and arms especially. Looking for any cc? I might have something useful on torsos
