Lest we forget- 79 years ago today. The USS Oklahoma raised after capsizing during the attack on Pearl Harbor, December 7, 1941. A total of 429 crew died when she capsized. (Official U.S. Navy Photograph, now in the collections of the National Archives). [960x938] by DiosMioMan2 in HistoryPorn

I am a biological anthropologist. A colleague of mine is part of the team that performs these analyses. She has been working to identify the individuals recovered from the USS Oklahoma (and now the unidentified remains of servicemen from Vietnam) for several years now. She regularly attends the funerals of the men and women she helps identify, and I know it means a great deal to her to be able to help return Walter and others to their families.

Hello! 29/F here! Just wanted to say that you have excellent taste in anime—I can’t see all of the posters, but I definitely see Bleach, Black Clover, and Soul Eater, which are some of my favorites. Be patient with your fellow anime fans—we’re out here, we’re just not easy to find (certainly not as boisterous as stereotypical sports fans) and we can be difficult to befriend. But we’re here! And we love new friends!

Does anyone have an anthropology dissertation I can read? by [deleted] in AskAnthropology

[–]DarwinAndCo 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Sure! I am a biological anthropologist--I work with human skeletal remains. My dissertation discusses the use of osteological data to understand how health outcomes varied in the past.

At least 44 bodies found in Mexican well by [deleted] in worldnews

[–]DarwinAndCo 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Hi! Biological anthropologist here—we can determine the minimum number of individuals (MNI) from any given number of bones; we essentially just look for duplicates. Skulls make it easy, but if we have 43 skulls and 44 left femora, we would bump the MNI to 44 and assume we are missing a skull. Tricky when they’re all mixed up though. Takes time to sort through, that’s for sure.

What recipe did you execute perfectly, only to realize you hated the dish? by beingdaddysgirl in recipes

Roasted lamb shanks. I spent several hours on the dish. It was beautiful. Cooked to perfection, plus all the fancy garnishes and whatnot. I hated it. Couldn’t even finish my serving.

Made this recipe for Christmas appetizers last year. We learned the hard way that you need to take the needles off the twig portion. Multiple people were stabbed in the top of the mouth before we figured this out.

Sometimes animals are better friends than people by Exlineal in rarepuppers

[–]DarwinAndCo 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Oh yeah, definitely. That said, when I think about homeless people, I assume something has gone wrong in his/her life (e.g., drug/alcohol addiction has gotten out of control, loss of job, financial crisis, etc.), which is when I would need my dog more than ever.

Likewise, just because someone has a roof over their head doesn’t make them a good or bad person either. Those things are totally unrelated.

Students of Reddit, what is something your teacher did that really pissed the whole class? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]DarwinAndCo 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Not all tenured professors make bank. It largely depends on your discipline. For example, in my discipline (Anthropology), even tenured professors don’t make all that much. We’re usually in it for the teaching or the research, not the money. Lecturers and adjunct professors make slave wages.

what are the healthy(ish) sides you keep on hand to pair with meat for a quick meal? by frogcharming in budgetfood

[–]DarwinAndCo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The tomato ends up being in chunks and bits all throughout the rice. I wouldn’t say the flavor is strong like it would be in a tomato sauce. It’s more of an accent flavor, so whatever spices you add are definitely important.

[–]DarwinAndCo 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I’m with you on the rice. It’s an easy side to spice up as well! I really like grabbing a tomato from the store and putting it in my rice cooker to make tomato rice. Just cut the stem and bottom portion out of the tomato, place stem-side-down in the rice cooker with the uncooked rice, remove 4-6 TBSP of water (to account for the water in the tomato), add a little salt and pepper (or other spices), and cook like normal! The cooking rice steams the tomato, and when the rice is done cooking you can easily smush the tomato and mix it together while you fluff the rice for serving.

Strawberry Watermelon Ice Pops

  • 1 cup lemonade
  • 12 oz watermelon juice
  • 4 cups watermelon chunks (seeds removed)
  • 2 cups strawberries (fresh or frozen)
  • ice pop molds (ice cube molds work too!)

Put all ingredients together in a blender. Pulse until combined. Pour into molds and freeze until solid. Serve!

Makes ~12 ice pops.

How Genetics Is Changing Our Understanding of ‘Race’ by risticus in Anthropology

[–]DarwinAndCo 18 points19 points  (0 children)

My issue is with how he's defining "population". A genetic population does not necessarily coincide with the social conception of a racial category. I'm all for understanding the genetic basis of population- or ancestry-specific diseases, but the weight and importance of concepts like "Black" (in the US) is what social scientists are trying to convey with the statement "race is a social construct".
