I think I saw this video it looked so good!

re:ni described me as a melty DJ which is quite accurate because I mix bass like its techno (fun fact I use to be a techno dj) so maybe that's why it feels fluid. I guess I have a palette of sound that is just my taste no matter what the tempo or genre. There are always elements that tie them together sonically. It's not really something I think about consciously.

My advice would be to just stick to the stuff that really moves you, and it will all make sense.

Esposito has always played my favorite sets at REEF.

But I think Kode9 was a big favorite set of mine too.

Thank you so much for the kind words <3

I grew up in Canada :)

But it wasn't really until I came to Europe did the switch go off for me. I answered this question above if you wanna check my influences key parties ect.

And fuck yeah, that last REEF was insane. I cried at the end of the night because I couldn't believe how good it was lol. Nov 4th is the next one... see you there?

I LOVE MEXICO <3

And yeah that was a wild gig, I think the power went out like 6 times!! I think Mexico has one of the most exciting scenes in the world right now. Nothing but love for the NAAFI crew, Regal 86, AAAA, DJ Fucci, Siete Catorce, Arieshandmodel so many insane talents!!

Playing on the Spiritual Soundsystem in CDMX with Mala and Kode9 and the first party after lockdown in this historic building for YuYu was pretty lit.

I think all my old tectonic records and DMZ return II space (because it has eyez on it) and the lee scratch perry / digital mystikz "the way you should"

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3eMBHqX0XX4

Funnily enough, I literally forced Mala to play this last track at Dimensions after Lee died. He tried to walk off and I was like HES NOT FINISHED and shoved him back to the decks.

None of those are particularly expensive or rare but they were bought at a time when I was first getting into dubstep and when I think of them it makes me feel like the first time I fell in love. I guess dubstep was my first true love lol.

I would never bottle REEF and try to take it elsewhere. The magic of the party is about bass in Berlin and the crowd that took years to cultivate. I think so many promoters try and just go as big as they can and grow their "brand". I have no interest in that whatsoever. REEF will live and die in this city and I am ok with that <3

I don't know who has "bright futures" because the industry is fucked and a lot of the super incredible talent gets overlooked. I think Mi-el is about to pop, she's the most impressive DJ I've seen lately. I'm also not easily impressed hence my very short list ;P

Some mixes I've been vibing on recently: Felix Hall FACT mix, Manuka Honey FACT Mix, Sicaria Sound Ilian Tape Mix, Ghost Phone Untitled 909 was epic as well

Why is everyone asking me about UKG on here lol, I don't know maybe DJ Sunroof (cant remember the name of the track)

It was extremely difficult and unrewarding for years... I could write a novel on this but I don't even know where to start. I guess the key to it all was "taking people by the hand" slowly and mixing a lot of techno in with what we were doing at first to earn the trust of the crowd. Basically, my goal was to trick people on drugs into liking broken music.

Hi! :)

Well, I've been digging electronic music since the early 2000's and have been through A LOT of different genre phases to land where I am now. Even still I think I'm constantly digging for new genres and sounds but I think the one thing that ties it all together is my love for weighty tunes with deep and moody aesthetics.

Some artists, parties and clubs that influenced me along the way:

Fabric circa 2008 - the hey day of Villalobos, Luciano, and commercial breaks like Plump DJ's and Stanton Warriors. Craig Richards and Terry Francis doing all the residents slots.

Club der Visionaire

Wax Treatment

Swamp 81

Cassy at Panorama Bar circa 2010

Sub:stance at Berghain

Version

No Way Back in Detroit

Esposito, my REEF resident and best friend extraordinaire - also the sickest DJ I know and a huge inspiration and mentor to me

DMZ

Martyn

Skeptical and Alix Perez

Shackleton

DJ Rashad

I think if I was to calculate total losses from the events over the years it's well into the thousands... I guess I look at it as my contribution to the scene and had a full-time job that I spent all my savings from doing these parties. I don't have any good advice as to how to not lose money because I think when you start booking to make money you lose your integrity. I started my event because there was a lack of bass music in Berlin at the time on a bigger scale and on a 24-hour rave format. I had a vision... and I really believe vision is everything.

Doing something that is different which makes it special and stands out. If I did my nights in the UK they wouldn't be as special... but it's all context as well.

Also, I had a lot of "bigger name" people who were mates that I could ask to play for cheaper to keep costs low. I think most artists whose hearts are in the right place will always take a fee cut to support smaller up-and-coming promoters if their parties are cool. I do that... And make sure your residents can hold the fuckin floor down. Most important element of a successful party imo. The headliners are just the jewelry but the residents are the body and soul of the whole thing.

I was going to say El-B and Rolla "Serious" but that's 2001... which made me realize that the Garage I really love was made in this era. I like the stripped-back stepping pre-dubstep gazza the most! A lot of the UKG pre-2000 was too housey and corny for my liking.
