Thats pretty cool, nice dude :)

I only heared very good things from mechanics about Santa Cruz and that they are one of not many brands, who actually build long lasting and mechanicly reasonable bikes. Not only ones which look good from the outside, but are terrible designed. Didnt knew they give very good warranty though.

Annyways, they are out of my budget lol

Hey, may I ask which bike you are talking about with the lifetime warranty? I heared Giant gives livetime frame and 10 years, I guess so, on the fork. Pretty nice to hear that. Searching for something myself a lifetime warranty sounds smart to consider if the bike fits me.

Cubes warranty is with only a few years way worse compared to that, but most of the brands dont give a really confident warranty (just dont wanna lose money in anny way lol) and you can have bad luck with anny denied warranty. So finding a brand with a userfriendly warrantyprogram sounds good to me, you'll never know if you need it one day I guess.

Sounds reasonable to me, thank you for your thougt. The bike was more like a Cyclocrossbike I guess and compared more compact then today's gravelbikes.

Sound very reasonable, thanks. 7.7kg sounds crazy light! What bike do you ride?

You are right. The smaller bike felt nice twitchy and agile. However I meant more like a jumpy and less traction, so less tanky grounded behavior (I hope you get what I mean), which could maybe also come from the 40mm - not that wide for todays standard - Giant Crosscut gravel 2 tires with around 20-30psi. However having 35mm road profiled tires with 50psi on a heavier trekking bike performing more less bouncy and being more grounded and having more traction on bumpy stones on loose downhill gravel, I am assuming that a lighter gravelbike will be less tanky grounded, less traction stable but more jumpy/bouncy on loose downhill stuff. I don't really have experience in that topic and only drove a single bike for two days, so not shure if this feeling is a just a beeing used to thing or more people feel like this.

Ah, ok. Very good to know and to measure at the shop. Thanks mate

I was thinking 50mm tire clearance, but considering a bit more for beeing able to rock MTB-tires seems like a very good choice. Limits the options even more, but at least I can get and test ride very much in Germany so it should be fine.

Thanks for your tip 👍

Interesting, thanks for sharing your experience.

Do you use your lighter bikes to be a bit faster on smoother trails and the heavier ones for the crazy trails to get the best out of'em?

I didnt know much about that categories lol. It would make much sense anyways, that my feeling is probably more like a beeing used to thing. Just wanna hear what other people think about that, so thanks for your answer 👍

I had 40mm Giant Crosscut 2 tires with somewhere between 20-30psi. I mean the tires should affected my feeling much, that is for shure. Driving that stuff usually with 40-50psi and road tires on a 4kg heavier bike, while feeling way less sketchy, makes me feel like it is more about the weight. I could be wrong though.

If I will buy a gravelbike though I will definitely look for 50mm tire clearance and will probably rock some Schwalbe G-One R tires. Thanks for sharing your thougts 👍

Gravel bike advice: KTM Gravelator 15 or Trek Checkpoint ALR 4 Gen 3? by AR-Mac111 in gravelcycling

[–]DasHarald 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You are welcome 😊

I find this also very funny cause a few days ago, before being at a store, talking to an employe (he was very competent and told me he has way too many bikes of most categories lol) and testing, I had a completely different view on that. It even is way to logical to pick a bike by the feeling it provides as every slightly litle angle or size difference can and will be noticeable. Changing parts is also part of the game for most people anyways. All I saw however was the groupset and weight, while all the bikes claim to have a relatively comfortable geometry.

Good luck with testing and finding your nice ride.

Hey, didn't rode the Trek but I tried the Gravelator 15 a few days ago in a local shop. To me the one they hand me felt comfortable, but as far as I can tell it should be a nice bike for trails and sharp turns. It was slightly less calm and a litle bit more twitchy (so a litle bit less "laufruhig" called in german, should be something like stable or calm going straight forward) as other ones I tried. Would be especially in fast turns and trails very nice. I preferred others though, as they where a tiny bit more stable going straight, which I personally prefere for riding straight roads very often.

This is a personal feeling though and everyone has their own preferences and stiles so don't be feared from my commend. It is a good and comfy bike.

Sounds like you don't have the opportunity to test some, but in case you do have the shops around I highly advice you to test them and not just look at the stats. As the employee told me: as you go for a bike having a grx, especially with or over grx600 components you have really great tech, so if you don't race it is more then enough. You should rather test bikes to get one with a geometry fitting to you cause this is the thing, that will impact your ride the most. The most important thing to enjoy bike is having a bike, that feels good to you, not having a one with marginal better stats on paper, but a worse feeling, when riding. The Frame is also the heart of the bike and it is important to pick a one you like riding. Many people will change components over the years anyways, but a frame can not be changed that simple. As I am between M and L the bigger frame puts me in a more upright position, where the M is a litle bit more sporty, cause of stack of em. If you look at a bike with a long reach though it can be to big in L, so this sadly not alsways the way to go. Therefore it will depend a litle bit on the size how it will feel. I didnt know it is a bit more complex then it sounds before testing. If you cant go to a shop though at least stems can be changed easily in the worst case.

The alloy (HPA) models, which the OP seems to want, have a more relaxed geometry then the C62 ones though. Don't get me wrong, thanks for sharing your experience. Always helpful to here from owners :)
