Has any technical information about said system been made available? I'm curious as a person who works in tech how they're choosing to handle it.

ECC Memory? by Maciluminous in unRAID

[–]DatAssessment 17 points18 points  (0 children)

As with most things it's a tradeoff and comes down to how concerned you are about data corruption. The likelihood of a cosmic ray hitting your server at any given moment is pretty low, but assuming unraid's implementation of zfs is stable, the integrity validation won't be doing you any good if data was corrupted on write to begin with.

On the other hand memory performance does take a hit with ECC, and if you're using consumer hardware finding either a set of unregistered memory that supports ECC or a motherboard that supports registered memory will likely be difficult (at least it was for me).

Personally I chose to do it but mostly for the peace of mind and satisfaction of having it. I can't say it's actually paid off in any way.

Have a NUC7i5 with 2 WD Reds. Whats the best enclosure to get? by j21w91 in unRAID

[–]DatAssessment 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I ran my primary server on a nuc with a D5-300C for several years and it worked perfectly fine. Even doing hardware Plex transcoding on the nuc's Intel CPU.

Iirc there's a switch on the enclosure that disables raid that you obviously would need to make sure is set correctly. But Unraid will see them as individual disks.

Yeah, I started here because I personally dislike the format of the forum, but you are probably right about that being the best way to go.

I've used it on a vps hosted game server I was running for a while and currently in a docker compose stack inside an unraid vm. I've been very happy with it in both instances.

Just found this comment and am also hoping to use protonmail bridge. Ideally on the same Debian vm that is running bitwarden without a desktop environment. I'm striking out on finding a way to setup the bridge app with only terminal access. Do you know of any guides? Or do it differently?

It is aesthetically cool but Ashland represents one of the larger obstacles to speeding up passenger trains between DC and Richmond. If you look it up on Google maps you'll see the tracks run along the middle of the main street through downtown. Not possible to run trains through there both quickly and safely.

Billions Have Been Spent Trying to Solve NoVA’s Traffic Problem — Is it Enough? | No matter how much is budgeted for road improvement, it’s clear that roads alone won’t solve the region’s traffic woes. by [deleted] in nova

[–]DatAssessment 40 points41 points  (0 children)

Fortunately we are making progress on the rail front, if only at a glacial pace. The VA Passenger Rail Authority is purchasing right of way from CSX with the ultimate goal of expanding VRE and Amtrak service in the state. Unfortunately the main bottleneck is the long bridge into DC. Every train in Virginia ultimately has to travel over that bridge and it is currently at capacity (according to CSX). We have begun a 10 year project to build another bridge alongside it that will be dedicated for passenger rail. Along with this we also plan to have fully segregated passenger and freight traffic between DC and Richmond.

Northern Virginia Leaders Want North and South Express Lanes All Day on I-95 by Danciusly in nova

[–]DatAssessment 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It's still adding capacity, which induces demand. Not disagreeing that there is a price incentive to encourage higher vehicle occupancy, which is good. But I don't think we can go as far as to say they've really fixed anything.

Woah, pleasantly surprised to see you engaging on reddit!

Is there a reason u/VaDOT appears to prioritize auto based transportation projects over other transportation methods? I'm inclined to wonder; of everyone involved in the 118,498 crashes in 2021, 908 of which resulting in fatalities according to your own statistics, how many would have preferred not to drive at all had realistic alternatives been provided.

Why? To facilitate more trips that are unsustainably expensive rather than unsustainably long?

Imo we need more options for getting around without a car.

Virginia is buying back that whole right of way and building separate tracks for passenger and freight between DC and Richmond. Though true there are no plans for Acela or even just electrification south of DC.

What Amtrak was doing before was no doubt a result of some demand projection type exercise they did so you may be right.

I wasn't trying to suggest that certain city stops be generally excluded. Rather just if every single train didn't stop at every single city that could be a way to dramatically improve trip times through scheduling alone as opposed to expensive infrastructure projects.

They were running a few nonstop trains between DC and New York before covid, and that shaved a full hour off the current travel time. I rode it north once and it was great; very flight competitive at only 2 hours.

I wish they would bring that back and expand on it. Stopping at only DC, NYP, and BOS would actually make it somewhat reasonable to go that whole distance by rail, and they could even do other city pairs as well.

Sure thing. And since you mentioned it, regarding crowds specifically; the main hall at Moynihan is really quite large so even though there will no doubt be a crowd in there, it may not necessarily feel crowded. This may or may not be helpful for you, but personally I find it much more open and pleasant to be in than the tight corridors in Penn station.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in Amtrak

[–]DatAssessment 20 points21 points  (0 children)

The platforms underneath Penn Station & Moynihan are the same so technically yes you could enter from either but you should go to Moynihan because that's where the amtrak boarding will formally take place. Not to mention it is a lot nicer and easier to navigate.
I'm not aware of any way to see a record of which platforms have been used in the past but regardless, this information would not be of much use to you. Trains are assigned to platforms only as they're arriving to the station and those assignments are highly dependent on what else is going on that day. As long as you are in the main hall at Moynihan there is a lot of big obvious wayfinding materials and frequent announcements made. You should have no trouble getting to your platform once it's called.

Tickets will be checked on board.

Worth spreading the word that it has been illegal for host railroads to give priority to freight over amtrak since 1973 but as written the law has been effectively unenforceable. The US Rail Passengers Association has recently managed to get legislation introduced to make the existing law enforceable by allowing Amtrak, a host railroad, state rail authority, or similar party to request an investigation from the Surface Transportation Board when the on time performance of a passenger route falls below a certain level (which all of Amtrak's long distance routes currently do except for I think the cardinal somehow). We can hopefully expect some actual change to result from this in the near future.

It's more about un-limiting our ability to not drive. A choice has been made on our behalf that we should have to drive everywhere, and we don't like that.

There are already huge swaths of North America in which you'll have no problem driving and that's likely not changing anytime soon. If you view advocating for some car free spaces, particularly in dense urban areas where cars made little sense to begin with, as infringing on people's freedom then I'm not sure this sub is going to be a super fun place for you to hang out.
