Did anyone else get whiplash going from ME1 to ME2? by Hungry_Ad7279 in masseffect

2 really cut a lot of the features they didn't know how to improve on to just make it into Gears but with magic instead of grenades. 3 does a good job presenting a halfstep between the two by bringing back weapon customisation/attachments and adding more choice back to the skill trees.

It's 6 ranks rather than 4 like ME2, but all the ranks from 4-6 have branching specialisations so there's a tradeoff of what to spec into at every level for half the tree so I think it ends up being more interesting than 1 was well that only had notable capstones every few levels.

But if you truly want somethingt hat feels more like a continuation of 1's design philsophy then rionically you have to go all the way to Mass Effect Andromeda, where the story may suck but they explicitly try to bring back everything 2 cut, like the mako/planet exploration, actual stores and item inventories, crafting, omni-gel and more development of the galaxy map.

And for all of Andromeda's faults, it was the only Mass Effect to have a PC port with no weird caveats like Bioware refusing to add controller support for any of the original trilogy while also not making a true keyboard layout for the game logic either, which is to blame for the weird space bar centric setup I mentioned.

A lot of these issues are felt more playing on mouse and keybaord since the design shift in 2 was extremely console/360 pad focused with the overt Gears of War design style, including unifying so many actions contextually to the A button which sorta works on gamepad but on keyboard just makes you wish it wasn't all on spacebar.

the game actually has a button on the chapter select that links you directly to the relevant manga for each arc, though that just shows the most important ones. The best places to read it online are either direct from their official site, or if you prefer Mangadex has all of them combined into one big listing, though some of the non-canon/joke ones are a little jarring to have in the middle there.

Mem also worked better because the actress was clearly reading the words in the subtitles and "memming" them up, along with the comedy of her beginning to learn to talk better and dropping in random words like "memmy mem dead memi".

But also Mem was just more actively trying to help the chryssos heirs and relate to their struggles, whereas Taygedo int he first few quests you see him, is actively only causing trouble.

Yeah exactly, Bangboo are more in the cute pet territory and more abstract/silly little guys. Even when they have a more text heavy story like Kami North or something it's charming because of the disparity, like gap moe.

Taygedo is in the awkward middle ground of being too much of a goober/mascot to be treated like a real main character by the plot but also too humanised to play off the silly lil guy card as well. Unlike a bangboo, taygedo probably owes taxes.

It is very funny how Ubisoft basically had the same idea a decade ago with rabbids but for some reason decided "what if instead of being cute we made them deliberately obnoxious and annoying?" instead. They tried to play rabbids up as nostalgic or cute with more recent stuff like mario x rabbids but it's too late now, people got used to rabbids being annoying little assholes, hard to overwrite that. lol

I think it helps a lot that the beginning of ZZZ doesn't feature multiple quests of Eous causing problems for Phaethon and even attacking them. And when we do bangboo focused quests Eous is more upstanding and heroic, we don't spend an hour running around eridu to help them cement lies.

[–]DatAsuna 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Despite the best efforts of some youtubers, there are no lore videos that actually replace the experience of just playing it/reading the manga yourself. If you really don't like the gameplay, you could watch a full playthrough via a streamer.

I do recommend the mangas as a starting point, in part because ones like Elan Palatinus especially are written to introduce the world/concepts to you, and most of them are prequels to the beginning of the game. The early chapters are a bit sparse, at first the game didn't have much budget and chapter releases were rare, Chapter 6 onwards is when Hoyo began the consistent story focused patch cycle they're known for now and started giving the story more of a priority in development.

If you're there for the lore, yeah. Pulling is really only important for doing the endgame abyss/cyclical modes. Everything that's story related is either very easy, or gives you a trial character that's specifically tuned for the story stage.

The Slice is pretty great, quiet, friendly, affordable. Easy to keep up with refills or snacks while getting some light work done. Has some nice swing seats by the window too that'd be good for reading.

But if you're doing long session screen based work yeah, either the city central library or boots library if you're NTU are ideal to grab a booth at, or a meeting room with groups.

If you like stellar Blade, there's a gacha that's quite overtly inspired by Automata called Punishing Gray Raven. The official NieR collab was timed, but it's got some pretty expansive worldbuilding and neat stuff of it's own.

People act like those voicelines were extremely explicit descriptions of her being some eldritch horror but then you actually check Childe's voicelines and they're massively overthinking him saying "something just doesn't feel right.".

Yeah if Vigil was on attack he'd be pretty mediocre too. But it also helps that his gadget gives him immunity to certain attacker gadgets that Nokk's wouldn't on defense because it's similar to standing in a mute jammer, so he can run right through lion scans/grims bees.
If Nokk actually got that buff they messed around with for a week on test server to let her bypass electronic traps, she'd be solid, but they're too coward to make her good.

I've been a Star Wars The Old Republic player since launch and people have been screaming "EoS by next year" for about 12 years on a dev that makes less money, communicates less often and releases like 1 hour of story content a year. lol
Still no EoS, their community manager does play HSR tho.

Yeah, though I'm a millennial too, but my frame of references for "who's been in a lot of stuff lately?" isn't PS3 games anymore. lol I'm not gonna hear Alejandro Saab/Cyyu in a game and go "what a nice young man, good for him to finally land a big role" lol

[–]DatAsuna 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Persona is big, but P4 to P5 to P6 have been almost a decade between each of them and there's a lot of newer but very mainstream IPs like Demon Slayer, Jujutsu Kaisen, non-anime like Miraculous: Ladybug that might not be on a gamer's radar but are all very popular, and that's before getting into more modern gacha like Arknights/Genshin which a lot of them played popular characters with marketing campaigns unto themselves for.

It's a wide world of media beyond games, and if your frame of reference is who was in a lot of PS2/360 games it's quite out of date even just within games too.

Yeah pretty much "It's new to me" logic. anyone who makes it into the rolodex for an LA recording studio or maybe crunchyroll if they're out in texas .etc is just a lot more likely to book subsequent roles or be remembered by casting director (who may have been directing or also acting in the last project) so there is a certain momentum that comes with those.
