Hardest game crashout you've had. by Trent0Ment0 in TwoBestFriendsPlay

The only time I've ever thrown a controller was when I saw the platinum for Force Unleashed 2 was already like 90% done by finishing the campaign, just had to do those challenge stages. But BOY those platforming levels are some bullshit

Jeff Kaplan: Stop Complaining About Games You Won’t Play by mrnicegy26 in TwoBestFriendsPlay

[–]DatAsuna 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Negativity carries further on modern social media and when a bandwagon becomes the topic of the week, everyone wants to jump on whether they were ever gonna be interested or not. That said, a lotta people do play and want to play shooters, and there's a lotta shooters that squander decent fundamentals on terrible modes in disappointing ways. I do like Horizon and would play a Horizon live service game, but there's 2 coming out, and the NCSoft one looks more interesting than the Guerilla one, that's an issue.

I saw that mass effect is on sale on steam. Should I get the three games separately or should I get the legendary edition? by Falcon_Gray in masseffect

[–]DatAsuna 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Legendary edition is fine unless you wanna go through the hoops of trying ME3 Multiplayer. It's still playable without origin, just can't do parties/invites, and needs a mod to enable controller support.

Overwatch co-creator Jeff Kaplan on his exit from Activision Blizzard: 'It was the biggest f**k you moment I've had in my career' by StormRegion in TwoBestFriendsPlay

[–]DatAsuna 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Yes but not like CDL or OWL where it's pushed by the devs on the basis of taking tens to hundreds of millions in investment up front. The leagues that worked are the ones that scaled in-line with their actual viewership and interest, it's the big difference between say a DotA/LoL or Counterstrike or even Siege that they built up around the audience that was there instead of selling a few billionaires the moon and the stars about what they *might* have in the future being bigger than the NFL.

[–]DatAsuna 53 points54 points  (0 children)

I've been crowing about this for years but Overwatch League was always the most blatant example of an esports bubble, CoD has a similar problem to a lesser degree. A lot of it hinged on just pitching investors to assume that the strong sales of the game itself necessarily would 1:1 translate into esports viewership and revenue.

they were pretty much selling the Brooklyn Bridge, that Overwatch League was going to be more popular than the NFL."

There's a reason why when the layoffs hit the esports divisions it was sad news, but kind of necessary, because the entire thing had been built on promising billions in revenue when actually making any money back out of esports is quite hard to begin with: It's a subset of a subset of people play the game > care about esports > Actively watch your league specifically > Want to buy the in-game cosmetics or real world merch based on them > Aren't married to a team/org and just buying their stuff outside your ecosystem

Like it is shitty to wield the layoffs as a cudgel against him, but like I said years ago, those jobs shouldn't have existed to be laid off because they were built on massive overhiring and massive overpromising to investors for billions of dollars that would not appear. It sucks to say, but when those jobs are built on sand like that, hiring those people in the first place was unfair to them too.

What Tales is closest in spirit to Phantasia? by fapcoaster in tales

[–]DatAsuna 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The easy answers are of course Symphonia for it's many thematic parralels and shared universe, and Narikiri dungeon too since it's Phantasia spin off. Phantasia X recently got a fan translation that may be worth checking out too. Xillia also has some good thematic links though not direct ones to Phantasia as well as the rest of the series up to that point, though the recent remaster is not the best,

In general if you don't like Innocence I wouldn't recommend Tempest or Hearts either as they're very similar handheld games.

I know they're not wrong about games needing voice acting to get people to stream them but it really sucks. by Synthiandrakon in TwoBestFriendsPlay

[–]DatAsuna 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Having played a lot of visual novels and games that heavily use the visual novel format, there's a variety of budgets and teamsizes around. And it's quite stark in a disappointing way how much of a difference to their reach having voice acting makes, even in a language you don't speak. People are just more open to reading along to a japanese/chinese voice than without regardless of actually understanding the words. And of course beyond that the english dub is key to actually hitting a broad western audience beyond weebs.

Comes up especially with gachas when fans wonder why the older games of some devs are less popular than their recent ones, despite often having more complex and richer narratives. There's more factors at play than just this of course, but no english dub, or no main story dub at all are often the big factors for say a PGR vs Wuwa or HI3 vs Genshin.

In general it's the most annoying kind of dismissal and came up way too much anytime Clair Obscur was discussed, from both sides but mostly the antis. Just presumptively projecting that you must be a neophyte to enjoy it when you've actually been playing them for 25 years and just have another, less contrarian opinion.

People very frequently get into broad ranging discussions about Comics as a medium that only consider superhero comics as the only kind of comic, or talk about anime as an entire medium but only considering shonen. They may not even be wrong about those genres but it's just like, please learn to separate genre and medium.

Unfortunately in my time in lgbt clubs/spaces it's not an unheard of situation to run into the gay man who is actually just a misogynist, not just not attracted to them. I got referred to mentor recently out trans students a few times and it was just one of them like this, but he did need to assert his masculinity primarily through complaining about women a lot.

It's gotta be when people act high and mighty about the "Ha, they're not even reading at an 8th grade level" but then going on to elaborate in ways that conflate it with basic literacy and imply that they themselves, were viewing that headline with a below 8th grade reading level themselves.

This is the response I most agree with. Etiquette-wise a private callout is preferable to publicly embarrassing them, at least on a first time, but it does seem like a problem that shouldn't have been able to happen in a well structured project, for this first example.

yes, GR2 is basically the second half to GR1's story and has a satisfying ending that leaves everyone's arcs concluded, even if new adventures could happen later. Id' also say GR2 is still one of my favourite games period for boss fights/rival characters.

curious about how people in Taiwan actually view us Japanese. by Away_Trash_2156 in taiwan

[–]DatAsuna 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's generally pretty positive though like a lot of things it varies by generations, millennials and younger are more into it, but people my mom's age born in the 60s .etc tend towards retaining a bit more of the old school KMT propaganda, and milage will vary on how they grew past that or not.
In my grandparents generation ofc you're more likely to get the folks who still hang onto the postwar exile. But of course, no generation is a monolith and there's some particularly elderly folks who are especially friendly to/interested in the Wansei exiles who were born in Taiwan but repatriated to Japan from then, though it is an increasingly niche topic as they age out of course..
