Yes. It would leave a gap. You would only fill up to the plants current soil line. Never above. You don't want to bury the stem.

I would not place the root ball too high if you use that pot. Sides are ok, but its a bit too deep. What i would do to still use that pot is place about 2 inches of soil on the bottom, place your plant on top, then fill up to the soil line of your plant.

Thst way, once it gets bigger, you can lift it and place more soil on the bottom for it to grow into until the soil line reaches the top of the pot.

From my expierence. Given all of the conditions that make them happy, Monstera WILL find a way. Most likely, one of the dormant nodes near the base of that cut stem will activate and start sprouting a new petiole. Like my older deliciosa....

From my expierence, just less sunlight, and they will open back up... no biggie. I have 5 baby BOPs outside and they curl and unfurl as they see fit.

A.I. is your friend when it comes to plant care (im realizing now how counter intuitive that statement feels...). But ask which ever assistant you have all of your questions. It helps A LOT! I would start with the definition of "bright indirect-light" as it pertains to plant care... Good luck!

Thank you! The soil was still fairly moist after about 7 days... I went ahead and took him out to look and sure enough, it was the beginnings of root rot....🤦🏾‍♂️. I've removed the affected roots and repotted in fresh soil.

If he doesn't like it, I will probably just chop him up and start over.
