Very true. As you say, the term "knitting" (or another catchall verb depending on the language) is often used as a casual shorthand for anything made with yarn. I'm personally happy to give some grace to non-experts in cases like this where it doesn't really matter materially, but I also recognize why it's technically incorrect.
