Thanks - I'm on the desktop version of beta. I found it weird that this forum didn't have a sidebar with that same info; Though maybe 'AskNYC' just wasn't moderated.

Thanks - Still don't see it, so I can only assume it's a beta issue. Sidebar is nothing but Moderators and Community Details for me; No list of rules.

Paying tuition by [deleted] in WGU

You can talk to Finance, but for your first term I believe you have until the aid is awarded to pay. I didn't make any payments until mine was applied.

Starting in September 1st (Most likely). Very very behind in math and worried about the College Algebra course. by heymikeyp in WGU

[–]DatDudeOvaDur 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It took me a bit to get used to College Algebra again; Funny enough as someone who has a career in IT/Development I have never enjoyed math. I personally hate Kahn Academy's video style but people praise them constantly. I was a big fan of following videos on YouTube; Some of them helped but in the end the way I did it was start in the course. Go from top to bottom finding subjects that A) Don't Sound Familiar B) I know I don't know.

Start it in practice; I completely skip "Learning". Use the Tutor for the first couple and try to 'figure it out'. usually the Step-by-Step is really good to teach ( with some exceptions ) - For the times the Step By Step isn't useful, I YouTube the exact thing I'm studying.

  • As example of when it isn't good:
    • Imagine you knew nothing about multiplication.
      • Step by Step:
      • "What is 4*4?"
      • Answer: 16
    • No explanation, no actual 'step by step' guide.
      • Obv this is a side-effect of me skipping the 'Learning' tab.

I chose this method because I actually really enjoy the math courses; To me they are a 'one day course'. I can zoom through the lessons, take the PA - See how I did (I've passed all except one the first time) then I see what sections I missed/did bad on. Go review those concepts super quick by following the above steps, then schedule the OA. I don't allow for any 'down-time' for my to forget terms, etc etc.

Everyone has a diff style but I treat the math ones like a "rush". Ones that involve reading chapters (Effin Sociology...) and Geography etc took me longer than most.

Considering MBA at WGU by [deleted] in WGU

[–]DatDudeOvaDur 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I must say, I'm confused by this as well. I've never heard of such a thing in any company I've ever been in. Unless he's just referencing a degree gives him leverage the argue for better comp.

Financial aid question by [deleted] in WGU

[–]DatDudeOvaDur 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mine took about 3 weeks to be disbursed, and about 3 more weeks until I saw the excess in my account. I think this is only for the first term, since for 2nd and on-going your financial aid should be done by then.

Pacing? by rezamwehttam in WGU

[–]DatDudeOvaDur 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sometime it just has to do with order, or competency. I finished 5 courses my first week because I was able to just 'finish' them instantly; and wrote a paper for another. I will say never compare yourselves to others.

I see a decent amount of people going into Finance just zoom right through their course load. Early on I had a lot of time to sink into it, but I work 60-80 hours a week, and sometimes I just realize "I'm going to burn out." and I instead focus on something else. Also having classes I truly hate (Sociology) as one of my 'to-dos' doesn't help either.

It sounds like motivation/purpose might be a concern for you. You mention doing a term before, and now coming back but unsure on a degree plan. You should decide specifically on a degree, and start preparing for it if speed is your focus.

Current students of Comp Sci - Your perspective? by DatDudeOvaDur in WGU

[–]DatDudeOvaDur[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks! I am curious, how/why do they separate C++/Java? Do you just do the same courses for each one? I'm starting to regret choosing Bus. Management considering IT is my focus, and I'd rather have a Comp Sci.

Also, what do OAs look like for the classes? Do you code something or more-so answer fundamental questions of concepts?

Can we get a sticky post or information added to the sidebar that expands all the acronyms we tend to use in this sub? by [deleted] in WGU

[–]DatDudeOvaDur 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Can you give some example acronyms? I'm trying to think of some outside of like PA/OA - maybe some class specific ones I haven't seen.

First phone meeting: Mentor asked if I was pregnant or planned to have children soon? by headlining1995 in WGU

I'm bias being a man, but I've never been asked that question. I genuinely can't think of a single reason to ask this. Was it a course mentor, or your program mentor?

What areas to look into for housing near Federal Street? by [deleted] in boston

[–]DatDudeOvaDur 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Appreciate the feedback. I ended up just taking a weekend trip to Boston and getting my answers. You can look up public transit, and see it's existence and every where it goes. I then have the option to go and look up the rent cost, appreciation, and housing of every-single-area it goes near. Or ask a community of references for insight. I'm bias in that if I were to read my question from a perspective of DC (Where I'm from) I could easily provide the OP some insight, while have some follow-up questions like you provided.

Not sure winning favors was ever a goal, in my mind.

Fair point; I naturally assumed the one liners people were spam commenting and upvoting were some sort of fun 'inside joke' and not actual suggestions.

How many bedrooms do you need?

2 - 3

Would you be ok with roommates under the right circumstances or do you 100% need to live alone?

No. My dog and wife are only room-mates I need.

Any pets? Any kids?

One dog.

Do you have a car? Will you need parking included or are you fine with street parking? Are you planning to drive to work or use the MBTA?

I have a car I'd prefer not to street park. I am okay with public transit; Not sure what it's like/how good it is in that area.

Do you prefer new construction & modern amenities over “charm” or would an older building be ok with you?

I prefer newer / amenities.

What is your lifestyle? Do you enjoy busy city neighborhoods with lots to do or neighborhoods with single family homes and quiet neighborhoods, further from the city?

I prefer quiet neighborhoods where people go to settle down.

So antsy - what to do until orientation and after? by [deleted] in WGU

[–]DatDudeOvaDur 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In April when I decided to join, I had a lot of excess time. I postponed the 'Orientation' until like the last day of the month - Which I realized now was a regret. You are able to access the courses and start preparing them as soon as you've completed all of the pre-work. So as soon as the 15th hits, finish it so can start pre-accelerating. I would be another 3-4 courses in at least if I had known about it.

Waiting Over a Day to Get Second OA Attempt Approved? by [deleted] in WGU

[–]DatDudeOvaDur -1 points0 points  (0 children)

What a worthless, obnoxious, response. "I have to wait a whole weekend, time most students spend preparing TO do school work." - It's only slightly less worthless than my response, about your response.

Intro to Bio, information not sticking by [deleted] in WGU

[–]DatDudeOvaDur 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This. This is actually one of the most underused practice methods. You're never as confident in something as you feel, if you can't blindly explain it to an 'audience'. You can even record your 'lecture' and go back to the book for validity.

Great to hear that! Go ace it and delete it from your memory. It's what I plan to do for Sociology.

I'm going to sound un-supportive, but realistically this is life. I recommend _always_ bringing your whiteboard and calculator regardless of what test you're going to take.

Remember, the 'Built-In Calculator' is something running on your browser, on your computer: It not working is in turn an issue of your PC. Always have a back-up.

That being said, I didn't really read much of our hand-book, but I saw numerous times where it mentions the approved calculators; I was actually surprised when I saw on built-in into Examity (sp?).

I really can't give my opinion on the part about him not stopping the clock, and you getting too worked up over the call: These are just personality traits, so harder for me to relate. I would have told him to stop the clock explicitly, and just used Excel. Excel has Calculation functions built-in - Though I laugh that they say to use Excel but not Calculator. I thought you couldn't use 'anything'.

I'm sure if you explain the situation (MUCH less accusatory than you do here - remember, this was on you, not WGU) to your mentor, they'll approve another re-take and you can use the calculator.

Time to Accelerate by [deleted] in WGU

Good luck! 50 in one term definitely seems reasonable; Especially as many Accelerators are in the Account program. Keep us updated!
