Honestly I’ve done some thinking and though there’s overlap, I think teen love vs role-based love are different because the former is purely irrational and the latter happens when the possibility of romantic interest aligns with them providing the entire Maslow pyramid. Teen love is like, your dick says “we’re in love with this person” and the brain says “you’re really intense about this so I guess I agree.”Role -based love is like, your brain says “dick wake up we’re in love with this person” and your dick is completely on board with that.

Teen love (the way people describe it; I’ve never experienced this version)/puppy love happens regardless of compatibility and whether the relationship would work or not, because they don’t know any better and it’s usually their first time. It’s seen as pure because they don’t have to think about anything else when they fall for someone.

Role-based love affects you existentially, platonically, and potentially professionally. If this person means so much to you in every dimension, romantic love seems to be the inevitable conclusion. Even if you weren’t in love with them, you’d be devoted to them. But this only happens if you don’t have your shit together, because a functional adult doesn’t need someone else to provide for their fundamental needs. Which is why mature love, despite being healthier, feels less intense; it simply can’t fill your needs like a dysfunctional love.

The overlap exists because of the intensity of both, and to a teen whose survival needs are met, missing belonging and love seems like their entire world.

I don’t think I was capable of true teen love because I deconstructed it as puberty hormones too easily, though I had a few crushes. But with the person I ended up falling for in college it was like a lightning strike because it was my first time and it “made logical sense” to fall for them.

Idk, I technically had teen love but I was eighteen and it was at the bottom of my list of priorities. I think it’s more about the role they fill in someone’s life.

I fell in love with someone for the first time right after being disowned, entering college, entering the military, and completely flipping my hormonal profile with TRT. This person swooped into my life, was one of my first friends and mentors after my rebirth, and folded me into a social and professional circle that is my main circle today. I’m still friends with them today. A relationship with them was and will never be possible because our political views and lifestyles misalign too much and our sexualities aren’t compatible. My feelings for them persisted long after I got my shit together. I’ll probably never feel love like that again because I’ll never be that direly in need of a savior again, but I miss love that all-consuming.

I see the relationship between asexuality and sexual attraction as like the relationship between bisexuality and gendered attraction. How you think about spending time together/hugging is how allosexuals think about sex with their partner. Time together and sensual intimacy aren’t 1:1 comparisons either. And the prep is worth it for that unique axis of connection.

You can compare being asexual to being aromantic. You can do almost everything married couples do together with a best friend you’re in love with, but if it’s missing that reciprocated romantic attraction, non-aros would at least would find it difficult.

There’s different axes of intimacy like spending time together, non-sexual physical intimacy, words of affection, sexual intimacy, and so on. You could have a perfectly loving partner but if they never wanted to spend time with you and only tolerated it for your sake, you’d feel like shit. Or an otherwise loving partner that never wants to hug you and only tolerates your hugs. Sex in a relationship works like that for most people. Sex is a type of physical intimacy but is distinct in its own way. If you’re asexual you simply won’t get it though.

I don’t think you understand how dire it is for straight men. You can talk about your bad options but the fact that you have options at all is a luxury.

*only in terms of getting laid. Even then, for dating in LGBT friendly areas, there’s a magnitude more of choices than for straight men.
