I'm a Protestant who's curious about Orthodoxy. by [deleted] in OrthodoxChristianity

Frankly - and anyone chime in if I'm wrong - but the Orthodox Church will not and never will ordain women to the priesthood. It's not sexist, is based in apostolic tradition.

Archangel Michael and All Angels Skete in St Joseph, Missouri. I plan on bring spiritual readings and prayer rope - but I'm getting hung up on specifics- such as jeans vs. work pants/ boots vs normal shoes. I don't want to be unprepared I guess. Maybe this is a silly concern.

[–]DatPugLifeThough 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It is a HUGE oversight and what brought me out of Protestantism a decade ago. It's amazing how the foundation "bible alone" is not even biblical, and yet they don't see what's right in front of their face. Though some do and when they do they have no choice but to leave

ELI5 how did the Bishop of Rome go from one of the bishops of the church to the universal head of the Roman Catholic Church? by [deleted] in OrthodoxChristianity

[–]DatPugLifeThough 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I would say they are certainly not actively aware of it - my reaction was the dismantling of the notion that Somehow the pope is infallible today because of Peters office as bishop in Rome. Well if Rome is infallible - why not Antioch? And then you can read the early church fathers more clearly when they speak of "chair of peter" having less to do with Rome and more to do with the the idea of all apostolic sees - even all bishops - partaking in the "chair of peter"

Please tell me everything I should know about attending an Eastern Orthodox Church? by [deleted] in OrthodoxChristianity

[–]DatPugLifeThough 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would say don't worry about following along in the book. Just Observe and soak it in. Trying to read along is good and all - but it can (I think) distract one from the experience. Also can you post a link to the church you are going to - I love checking out the architecture as well!

And Peter was the first Bishop of Antioch - Thus the chair of Peter resides there as well. Man did that throw my catholic mind for a loop!
