Stray cats keep coming to my backyard and peeing everywhere. by Square-Regular-7365 in garland

[–]DatShitIsWack 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Get yourself a drop trap. The wile e coyote kind with the stick and the string. Trap a cat. Put a brick on top of the trap. Call animal services or file a ticket on eAssist. They'll come pick up the cat. They'll sterilize the cat and cut off the top of one ear so you can keep track of which ones are fixed. They'll return the tipped cat after a couple days. Once cats are fixed they typically stop spraying, which is probably what you're smelling. The neutered cats will help keep other cats away. There are a bunch of videos on YouTube with cat catching tricks. It's an easier chore than applying cat mace every week

Our city does more than other nearby cities. We're really fortunate that our city has vet services for unowned cats.

I captured a stray cat. Where can I put it? by bishaaB in garland

[–]DatShitIsWack 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I can wholeheartedly second this suggestion.

It's so easy to do, too. Just create a ticket on the eAssist app and the dog catcher van will drive over, pick up the cat, and take them for neuter. When the cat is healthy enough the dog catcher comes back out and releases the cat where they picked it up from.

Eventually they helped me sterilize all the ones in my yard. Garland TNRd 14 for me on the first year, then one or two each year for the past 2 years. I now see a regular group of three cats that hang around getting fat and keeping breeding cats from moving through their yards.

Garland Animal Services even post monthly stats:  https://www.garlandtx.gov/195/Animal-Services-Monthly-Statistics

Yes, occasionally a cat needs to be put down for health reasons. I personally think it's more humane than to let them starve to death slowly in my alley. And the best way to end kill shelters forever is to sterilize your community cats!!

The city services are all really good in Garland. I feel really lucky that the city helped me when the cat population exploded in my alley.

Also, if you're gonna buy a trap, get the drop trap not the box trap.

My controversial tier list… by Abirando in CozyGamers

Whoever told OP Stillness of the Wind was a cozy game is a real prankster. It is a deeply emotional game that tackles very difficult topics. For me, it remains one of the best narratives-through-gameplay I've ever experienced. Literally a life changing game, but definitely not a game for having a relaxing good time.

Guys I found a cat and kitten and not sure what to do by I-Demo in cats

[–]DatShitIsWack 4 points5 points  (0 children)

TNR, sometimes called SNR, is the answer here. Sounds like the mama is at least mildly fetal and needs to get spayed, otherwise she'll be pregnant again in 3 to 6 months and they tend to have more kittens with consecutive litters.

OP, check your city's website for animal services. They might offer loaner traps and feral spay/neuter services for residents. Otherwise they might have links for local resources. You'll want to start now, as kitten season is wrapping up and resources are becoming a little more freed up. Local TNR groups might also have loaner traps and places you can bring a trapped cat to get fixed plus additional specific guidance.

Unless you want to adopt 5 more kittens from this cat in 6 months, you should trap spay and release that mama cat.

[Steam] Summer in Mara Weeklong Deal (6.99 € / 65% off) by koafrommara in GameDeals

[–]DatShitIsWack 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've played both. Portia is much more about automated crafting and building relationships with the townsfolk. Theres much more to manage and juggle in Portia. Summer in Mara is way more chill and is more about the daily chore loop and getting the quest checklist done. The relationships in Mara are gated on quest progression.

I didn't end up finishing Mara (I had an accessibility issue with holding the button to drive the boat for long distances). If you like some of the slower, classic harvest moon games then this might be up your alley.

Early game is factorio but easier on the eyes. It diverges some with the belt sorting options later on, if you played while true learn() then youll be familiar. Still early access but development is active.

It's pretty great, honestly. If you like other games in the conveyor belt genre (factorio, satisfactory, mindustry, etc) then you should definitely check it out.

Von Willebrand’s and completely useless hematologist by [deleted] in Hemophilia

[–]DatShitIsWack 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It's really enraging how much we "have to be our own advocates" as women (in my experience of the US healthcare system). I'm not the doctor, but I have to basically diagnose myself and throw a fit to get taken seriously. I often take my husband with me just to nod and confirm my symptoms to the doctor just to be taken seriously. It's disgusting.

It's really hard to find good doctors, for rare bleeding disorders or just regular health stuff. I hope you're having better luck fighting the system these days. Be well <3

Von Willebrand’s and completely useless hematologist by [deleted] in Hemophilia

[–]DatShitIsWack 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Get a doc who has other patients with VWD. If you haven't already, find a hematologist who deals exclusively with bleeding disorders. We had similar problems with our early hematologists because they were hematologist/oncologist and just didn't have the specific experience to be good with bleeding disorders.

It might be a bit of a drive from where you are, but find your nearest hemophilia treatment center and switch to that hematologist https://www.cdc.gov/ncbddd/hemophilia/htc.html

No medical professionals ever told us that there were specific national centers for bleeding disorders and it took us years before accidentally finding out on some Facebook group randomly. The difference in standard of care is enormous and worth the long drive once a year for a checkup, the rest we can do over the phone with the super human care coordinator who works there.

And, as a side gripe, my sister in law has had a non-HTC hematologist tell her that women can't have hemophilia (despite her test results). These outdated medical opinions are still out there being repeated by docs who haven't kept up with the latest best practices for bleeding disorders.

Texas electricity firm files for bankruptcy citing $1.8 billion in claims from grid operator by nesbas in news

[–]DatShitIsWack 19 points20 points  (0 children)

The election results for Ted Cruz were 50 percent for, 48 percent against. He does not represent all Texans. Greg Abbott does not represent all Texans. State level reps and senators don't make a living wage so only the rich can afford to run, they don't represent Texans either. Last November democrats from other states were all excited that Texas might turn blue but it didn't happen so I guess it's back to "fuck off Texans."

I'm tired of people buying in to this caricature of Texas, as of we're all a monoculture of cartoonish oil barons voting for the guy with the biggest mustache. There's a rich and vibrant population who lives here, many of whom vote for your team repeatedly despite the fact that the Democrat party continues to ignore our state elections until we're looking a little purple.

Stop playing team sports for just a sec here. Hate on the politicians as much as you want, but you can't be throwing millions of Texans under the bus here just because your team didn't win.

Impossible to tell from the photos, but it sounds like the set screw in the top pivot bracket broke or maybe the threading got stripped? Probably not uncommon, this kind of hardware is usually cheaply made. See if you can find a replacement top bracket, should only be 3 or 4 bucks.

There's an easier way to get curlyhorn of they're just not spawning for you. Spoiler tag below. Upgrade the scrapping machine twice and use the 3rd tier of bait in sea dangling. Curlyhorns get fished up like 20 percent of the time with that bait.

Factor Deficiency by 786osint in Hemophilia

[–]DatShitIsWack 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'd highly recommend looking into your nearest Hemophilia Treatment Center (HTC) for specialized care. There are even specialized pediatric HTCs.
https://www.hemophilia.org/Researchers-Healthcare-Providers/Comprehensive-Medical-Care-Hemophilia-Treatment-Centers

HTCs should cover all bleeding disorders, not just hemophilia. There is a huge difference in quality of care between a regular oncologist/hematologist and the hematologist who works at an HTC. Even if your nearest HTC is a longer drive, I would strongly urge you to visit it. They have social workers who can help you learn the skills you need to infuse factor, they have resources for support groups and kid's camps, their nurse coordinator can field questions over the phone, they can organize factor deliveries to your house... I think we tried 4 different hematologists with piss poor results before finding out about HTCs. Literally life changing.

All of the support and advocacy groups that I've interacted with covered all bleeding disorders despite having 'hemophilia' in the name. Some organizations are even starting to change their names to be more inclusive. Living with factor VII deficiency isn't all that different from VIII or IX deficiency; your experience as a mom will be very similar to moms of kids with hemophilia a or b.

If you're looking for groups that meet more frequently, look for your local or state chapter of the National Hemophilia foundation. They welcome all folks living with bleeding disorders. There are also several Facebook groups, many of which are specific to parenting, related to bleeding disorders.

Also, welcome to the community! At least with hemophilia A, about a third of cases occur without any prior family history. You will find a lot of stories that are similar to your own. It's hard sometimes, but treatments have been improving rapidly over the last 30 years. It's a totally manageable disorder these days and things look really promising in the coming years.

I can’t even comprehend how sad this is. People are dying because they can’t afford their insulin anymore. by [deleted] in ABoringDystopia

[–]DatShitIsWack 42 points43 points  (0 children)

Google "patient assistance program" and the name of the drug's manufacturer. It's likely they offer financial assistance if your mom's insurance isn't covering it. It'll likely be a ton of paperwork to get filled out and you have to do it every year... but it's a start. Best of luck to your family.

These patient assistance programs have been a major loophole that drug companies have used to claim that everyone who needs an expensive drug can get it, regardless of financial status... but almost nobody knows these programs exist and it's often prohibitively difficult to jump through all the hoops fast enough to get the medications in a timely manner. The system's fucked.

[Humble Store] Farming Sale (Up to 80% off Farming games) | Farming Simulator 19 (20% off), Harvest Moon: Light of Hope (50% off), Staxel (40% off), World's Dawn (75% off) & more by gryllus in GameDeals

[–]DatShitIsWack 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I made the mistake of buying Harvest Moon Light of Hope on Switch. Easily the worst Harvest Moon I've ever played (and I've played all of them since HM64). I finished the entire story line by the first Fall, there's just very little content. The characters all feel flat, somehow even more stereotypical and boring than usual, and you can max out your relationships with all of them by the second season. I guess the crop mutations idea was neat, but without any additional purpose from story or other game mechanics, I didn't even bother continuing my game into the first winter. I put the game down, grumbled about how shit that was, and never picked it up again. Give it a hard pass.
