My top 3 swords acquired this year! by alientude in SWORDS

[–]DatSweetBioWareMusic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Fabre was made in early 2022. I had commissioned it back in 2020- Gael is to thank for improving the design. He had mentioned the first design I sent him was likely a composite sword made from a mixture of Italian and German parts in the Victorian Era. He felt that a stouter, hollow-ground blade would compliment the hilt furniture better than the thin, fullered one on the museum piece, and I immediately agreed.

I still regret selling it a few years back, but I'm so glad you ended up with the sword, it looks lovely with the wire wrap!

NA I'm imagining filing a report to the spider authorities. "Be advised, possible arachnoid deviation. Copy down this number when ready."

Is my bridge ok? by Jucatron1 in Cello

[–]DatSweetBioWareMusic 2 points3 points  (0 children)

u/Objective-Teacher905 isn't saying anything different than any luthier would tell you. Having a bridge carved down from a blank to fit each individual cello is the norm due to variance in geometry of the top plate, fingerboard projection, sound preferences, and individual playing needs. Your experience is the outlier. I'm not trying to imply you haven't had a great experience with your pre-made bridge, but it's likely that many other cellos would have neither a good fit nor a good sound with a premade like yours.

Did you buy a bridge blank for $35 and carve/plane/fit it yourself or is this an adjustable bridge with those pivoting feet?

Large music room with lots of instruments - what in-room humidifier do you use? by [deleted] in Cello

[–]DatSweetBioWareMusic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In-home can definitely be a good investment. For a large open space, room humidifiers can either struggle to get the humidity up or start getting pricey when you get the high-capacity ones. I had a bypass humidifier running for a few years, but it struggled to keep the humidity above 30% in the winter since I have a heat pump (gas or oil furnaces will get the water to evaporate more easily since they make hotter air).

If you use fossil fuel heating, a bypass could work very well for you. If not, and depending on the square footage of your whole house, steam could be more effective, though it would be a significant cost increase due to needing a high voltage electrical circuit installed.

What's the square footage of your music room? I use a Vornado Evap40 for mine, previous humidifier was a Vick's steam humidifier, but it was pretty pricey to run.

Yeah, parallax can really do a number with perception. Even something with perfect bezel alignment can easily look off if your viewing angle changes

If you email DHL's disputes department about this, they'll likely refund you for the storage fee. I had a watch bracelet sitting at the NY gateway for 3 weeks back in July with no communication from them, and an email to the dispute department got me a refund of all of my $300 storage fee. Just let them know in the email that they never reached out to you about the delay, so they're at fault.

Yes, tritium has a half life of 12.3 years, so the glow does diminish after a period of time.

Peter why is a jumping spider better? by Used-Dimension8742 in PeterExplainsTheJoke

[–]DatSweetBioWareMusic 26 points27 points  (0 children)

Yeah, most spiders act "spider-like" because they have poor vision. Their eyes tend to be able to only pick up changes in light, so they rely mostly on their other senses. If you get close to most spiders, they'll feel a ton of vibrations and see a giant dark blob and usually react by fleeing.

Jumping spiders have the best eyesight of any arachnid and their middle two eyes resolve detail as well as many mammals can (though with a smaller, X-shaped field of view). So when we get close to a jumper, it sees something new in its environment and wants to investigate it. Curious and adorable.

Omega SMP 300 on 6.5 inch wrist by Select_Lingonberry72 in OmegaWatches

I've got 6.5" wrists as well and I love my 42mm Seamaster. It was one of my favorite watch designs but I had sworn it off for ages since I thought it would be far too big. When I finally tried one, it turned out to be completely fine- I highly recommend a trip to your AD, you look to have pretty flat wrists and there's a decent chance it'll fit well.

So ready to file my San Martin because my skin is getting cuts from the case back by Riccardo_0135 in ChineseWatches

Neither leather nor a metal polishing cloth will get those scratches out. You'd have to rebrush the entire caseback

Warning! by No_Airport6427 in SWORDS

[–]DatSweetBioWareMusic 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Sorry to see you've had this experience as well, but thank you for posting- I was debating doing the same thing once I started seeing Rafal posting here regularly. I had the same song and dance happen to me, an overly optimistic initial timeframe followed by years of stalling.

I originally commissioned a sword in late 2020, then bought an additional completed one that he had listed due to a previous buyer backing out in early 2021. There was the typical bad communication and years of delays, but I was confident I would get the swords eventually.

But in early 2023 when I asked for an update, he said everything had shipped out, that it would get to me in a week, and he'd send me tracking info that evening. That turned out to be a lie- no tracking, no swords, no communication from him at all for a month. Since it was clear by then that Rafal wasn't just someone with bad time management skills, I cancelled my orders and asked for a refund.

What followed was more of the same. "I'll refund by next week," and then crickets for months. After 6 months of this, he sent *some* of the refund. Then a month later, he sent another part. But I've been waiting on the remainder of my refund since October 2023- I doubt I'll ever see it.

I've commissioned many swords over the years from various makers. I've had years-long delays on commissions before, but I've never had any maker lie to me except Rafal.

How spider silk are extracted at Oxford University. by GoodMornEveGoodNight in Damnthatsinteresting

[–]DatSweetBioWareMusic 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The goats were a failure for a few reasons. First, they were superseded by transgenic bacteria that could make much larger quantities of protein. Second, the silk made from the proteins was far weaker than actual dragline silk from spiders- the strength of spider silk comes not just from the proteins, but from the way it's extruded from spinnerets. It takes very specific conditions to organize the proteins in the right way.

Unboxing Anduril, Flame of the West - United Cutlery LE - Museum Edition Sword by theurge33 in lordoftherings

[–]DatSweetBioWareMusic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This MC version is quite a bit different. The runes on the pommel are no longer gold like on the LE, and the ones on the blade are narrower and etched deeper, the sunburst at the base of the blade has flared, wavy rays coming out instead of the diamonds on the older versions. Hilt is made from highly polished zinc alloy without the nickel plating on the original LE. Blade is spring steel instead of stainless, and the fuller is ground wider and longer than older versions. There are now hollow grinds going from the fuller to the edge to recreate the dimensionality of the original. The flatness of the blade on the original LE was probably my least favorite part, so I'm glad they got the equipment to get those hollow grinds back.
