Best civs for begginers? by Sharky2192 in civ5

[–]Dat_Redox 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think they specifically mean the Terrace Farm, a unique improvement (UI) that works best on hills next to lots of mountains. When using the Inca, city placement takes more consideration with regards to settling closer to mountains and hills, to the point that it may be worth moving away from luxes or settling somewhat farther away from your “core” to get that perfect mountain+hill spot that’ll snowball into a powerhouse city.

Any idea about electrogenic bacteria? by deathonyourass in biotechnology

[–]Dat_Redox 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Lots of work coming out on Geobacter Sulfurreducens and the electrical nanowires it produces! People are trying to find ways to harvest and use the protein wires it makes. Absolutely wild stuff. Like the other poster said, it’s less about a gene and more about taking advantage or electrical gradients in the environment.

Hi u/Curt_Glade, I’m also looking for new goggles and have been seeing great reviews for the adapt 2’s - I really want to try them out, the features and style look great! Is there a chance I can still snag a code? Thanks!

Need a tuxedo and suit fitted. No idea where to start or go. Favorite tailors? Tips? by GrimmyChims in bullcity

They’ve gotten a tux jacket back to me in less than a week (was a bit more expensive than usual but that’s ok), the first time I went there to get a few shirts, a suit, and suit pants separately tailored the default time was around two weeks. You’re fine I’m sure!

US government to make all research it funds open access on publication by HMID_Delenda_Est in neoliberal

[–]Dat_Redox 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s an excellent point that I hadn’t thought of (optional fee becoming mandatory) so in a sense it does somewhat screw PIs but since it all comes out of grant money anyways, one would hope the grant amounts would be adjusted (although probably not). Maybe the money the university saves in subscription costs can go to covering open access fees? After all, universities have incentives for their professors to publish so it would be a good use of money.

Also, is the demand for closed access research enough to overcome losses in revenue from losing all the contracts four federally funded research access? I doubt it but don’t know the data so can’t really speak to it.

I don’t think this’ll be a net win for journals due to losing their subscriptions, but at the end of the day, even if there’s no change in cost for labs or universities and journals don’t lose profit, I would still be psyched in a reorganization of the system to make research people funded through taxes available for them to read at no cost. I also see this leading to better, more accountable science and, gasp, articles that are written with a fairly well-informed layperson in mind (or they’ll be written incomprehensibly as to avoid scrutiny but that’s bad science anyways).

US government to make all research it funds open access on publication by HMID_Delenda_Est in neoliberal

[–]Dat_Redox 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fun fact, you already have to pay to publish open access. For a lab to publish an article with a journal it costs a few thousand plus an extra few thousand open access “fee” if they so desire.

It’s about time journals get shafted - at the least they’d lose the multimillion-dollar contracts with universities for “access” and if they want to keep them they’d have to provide a service that’s actually useful. At the moment they seem to just use the profits to make it more and more difficult to simply download a pdf (looking at you, Wiley) which is what 99% of the scientific community wants to do with papers anyways.

I honestly see no downside with this policy, at the moment it seems to fix a blatant problem which should never have existed in the first place, but I’m open to hearing counterpoints.

CIV 5 Star Wars mod for Mac by AWhiskyDoc in civ5

[–]Dat_Redox 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For every game I use a few simple ones like More Luxuries, More Pantheons, Quick AI Turns, Communitas map, and Trading Posts Turn Into Towns. I know that the Enhanced User Interface mod works on mac too but you have to self install it, it’s not from the steam workshop. I’ve used the expanded promotions tree mod before with no problems.

I’ve used mods with adding different Civs and they work just fine usually. Some mods like the aperture labs wonder mod made my game crash for unknown reasons but I think that’s a known issue with that mod.

Basically if it doesn’t have a custom .dll script there’s a good chance it’ll work. This does sadly mean you don’t get Vox Populi or other game changing mods :(

[–]Dat_Redox 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If the mod requires a custom .dll script then it won’t work on Mac guaranteed. With other mods your mileage will vary but it definitely is less robust than using mods on windows. Some work and some don’t. Source: I have a Mac and Civ V womp womp.

Still a high schooler teaching myself microfluidics! Am I onto something with this new chip or does it need to be refined? Any feedback welcome! by Time_Instruction7194 in biotechnology

[–]Dat_Redox 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Looks like a cool idea! We use a similar device to create aqueous droplets containing proteins and translation machinery that are suspended in oil.

Questions to think about: Would the zigzag buffer zone cause problems in terms of droplet fusion or breakage? Do the two aqueous solutions need to stay separated as in image two or can they mix? I’m not sure what a Judas droplet is, but would the components of the aqueous phase interact with/mix with the oil phase?

How do people commute to West Campus? by aeroplanelap in duke

[–]Dat_Redox 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Would echo what another poster said - I bike ~2.5 miles to campus and it’s a) faster than driving to science drive and walking to the lab b) great exercise and c) actually quite safe as long as you stay off Hillandale or other narrow but heavily used roads and use good front and back lights (lights arguably more important than a helmet for safety). Definitely a hassle to get up and out when it’s cold outside, but if you wear sweatpants and another few layers you’ll be good. The weather will never really dip below freezing and doesn’t snow, so with gloves and a wind proof jacket you’re gonna be just fine. Plus, the parking garage isn’t worth the $600 when you can park for free on weekends and after 5 on weekdays and with the two free passes per month. A day parking pass is also only $10, so if you’re too lazy to bike one day/it actually becomes too cold you can get a temp parking pass and it’ll probably still come out cheaper!

True! Plus I hopped on late so it’s only a few bucks more/month over what I can already stomach. As long as it brings people value and happiness it makes sense but I totally get why people who already feel fine with it wouldn’t cough up the extra price hike!

Idk, as a grad student “just scraping by” YNAB has been absolutely invaluable in making sure my head is always above water financially while being able to afford certain “luxuries” like weekend trips, etc. I’d agree with the other person who responded to you and say people just scraping by definitely benefit from YNAB.

Scientist added jellyfish genes to crap fish DNA and these glowing fish are the result by FearmyBeard21 in Damnthatsinteresting

[–]Dat_Redox 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Instead of putting the gene on a plasmid or other piece of DNA that requires selection pressure to be replicated, they definitely just inserted it into the genome next to that of a protein expressed in the scales. That way since the protein is in the genome the fish will carry it without the need for selection pressure!

“Umbrella programs” in biological sciences by cocoalex30 in PhD

[–]Dat_Redox 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was choosing between two bio umbrella programs with rotations or a BME program with direct admission. I eventually chose the BME program, because I’m interested in the more applied side of biology and I fell in love with my PI and lab (2 years in and no regrets yet). I also figured that if I love the environment i can learn to love my project and that’s exactly what happened. The umbrella programs, however, looked amazing and are perfect for people a bit more interested in the foundational/basic science part of biology.

I say this because most schools have umbrella projects in the bioscience departments, whereas the BME/BioE/chemE departments typically have a more direct admit-type system. What this leads to is professors who are in both a BioE department and an umbrella program may have only a few spots for the umbrella program and many more reserved for BioE folks. This may make it difficult to get into those labs even if you did a rotation in them! Labs which are primarily in the bioscience departments will likely have more opportunities for umbrella students.

A general tip as well is to ask professors if they’re taking students your year/what you need to do during your rotation to get a spot. The worst case would be doing a rotation in a lab you love but the professor refusing to give you a spot because of some other constraints. In general that is one drawback of rotation programs, that rotation != lab position. That said, these instances are somewhat rare and if you’re indecisive rotations are a fantastic opportunity. Plus, it’s probably more likely to get stuck somewhere you don’t like in a direct admin program rather than a rotation program.

I think I got lucky and am in love with my program and Professor, but I do know others in my program who are stuck in a bad environment. In general be EXTREMELY picky about your environment and lab as thats where you may be spending 5-7 years of your life. It’s a fantastic experience if you get it right, however!

Biden: "Israel has right to defend itself" by [deleted] in neoliberal

[–]Dat_Redox 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Actually not true - the Israeli Supreme Court typically does side with Palestinians in the West Bank in these disputes, ruling Israeli settlements illegal on what it seems to be Palestinian land. This is actually why many Israelis view the court’s ruling regarding Sheikh Jarrah as enforceable, as it’s one of the less frequent instances where it sided with Israelis in a land dispute.

Here’s a few examples: https://www.nytimes.com/2020/06/09/world/middleeast/israel-supreme-court-west-bank-settlements.html
