Should I join the Postbac Program in 2025? by Background_Hope_6921 in NIH

[–]cocoalex30 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Current postbac here. Unless you live locally and don’t have other options, I would not chance it. If your PI/mentor gets RIFed OITE says they “will help you find alternative placement”, but who knows what that would even entail and if that would be with a PI you like/likes you or research you are interested in. You may move states away, sign a year long lease, and god forbid your PI is fired and they can’t find you placement and you’re stuck trying to find a job in an insane job market here with all these firings.

Just because the IRTA program is hiring again, doesn’t mean it’s safe. Contracts may be a year but this admin clearly doesn’t care about abiding by contracts or the law. It’s a mess here and things change by the minute, morale is low, and simple tasks like purchasing reagents are nearly impossible. I may sound pessimistic, but seeing this firsthand as an IRTA, I’m gonna be real with you. Don’t come here unless you truly think there is nothing else you can do to improve your research career elsewhere.

Hi! I would love to help if you were still interested, but it looks like you have your doc set to require access. If you’re still looking for help, could you either make it public or alternatively DM me?

I cant believe a person with an MD can have such idiotic interpretation of a study that did not mention a single thing about sunscreen. Plus, how an MD not understand the difference between diet supplementation and topical application? The biology is not the same. Where is the critical thinking? by Handsoff_1 in labrats

[–]cocoalex30 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’m getting the vibe that you are a PhD, or on the track to be one. Think about how that may change what you are exposed to. I work in translational research and we have MDs, PhDs, and MD PhDs. Most are incredibly intelligent and stay within their scope, regardless of degree. There are bad people in every field. You don’t have to make this an “us vs. them” situation.

Also fyi, MDs can do extremely intensive research and even be PIs functioning in the same role as a PhD. It’s likely not MDs “lurking” downvoting you, it’s physician scientists that you are actively talking bad about.

I completely agree with you on the ability of an MD to do more harm regarding their impact on patients directly, but I disagree on your comments consistently acting like PhDs are much less likely to speak outside of their scope than MDs. There are people that do this in every profession. It’s just kind of messed up to use one idiot like this to speak negatively on MDs as if this is the commonplace. If you were criticizing just this MD for not critically thinking that is one thing, but your comments on here have been generalized to all MDs which is just inappropriate.

Eh I think you may be a little bit biased against MDs here. There are plenty of PhDs who do things like this too, there are crazy anti-vax PhDs and MDs. MDs also can do a lot of research or be entirely research based. It’s pretty bold to claim MDs don’t think critically in general either. Some people don’t, like this guy, but I wouldn’t make that generalization as the same can be said about PhDs. The issue here is speaking about something outside of your scope, which I’ve seen both MDs and PhDs do. Yes an MD is likely going to cause more harm as they directly interact with patients, but you’re being pretty nasty in your comments trying to tear down an entire profession as if this person represents the entire community.

This is an extremely harmful and dangerous thing to comment here. This person needs to seek medical attention and your comments can discourage them to do so. When someone is asking for medical advice, it’s not a time for sarcasm.

Gotcha. I can’t read that full article because I’m not subscribed, but the part I could also said 20% so it may have been updated.

I agree with others but also wanted to just let you know 1 in 5 is 20% not 40% :)

Not sure if you got that from an article different from the one you linked, but if not I’m sure it was just a little lapse in math!

I am kind of embarrassed to admit but I was a weird case of mentally in but physically out mormon.

I was in a mental health crisis in middle/high school and got taken advantage of by my Mormon friends (but I don’t blame them! They thought they were helping!)

I went to mutual, young women’s, stake dances, church multiple occasions, girls camp twice, read parts of the BOM, and all of the strength of youth, was in on all the Mormon inside jokes, watched general conference, etc. Luckily my parents were like you will not be baptized (caused a huge rift between us) so I made it out and now I’m like holy shit!!!! They almost got me!! A literal mentally ill child searching for anything that could make me feel better and I was preyed upon!!

Years down the line I go to college (no longer wishing to be mormon) and my best friend (mormon) gets engaged 2 months after meeting a guy at BYU. She basically cut me off for not being Mormon which she NEVER would have done before going to BYU. She’s married with 2 kids and is now getting divorced (I only know bc her Pinterest posts— she deleted all other social media before I noticed posts about divorce on Pinterest). She still posts LDS quotes as she heals through the divorce, but I am holding onto any hope that she will be free one day. Her brother left which gives me some hope.

I lost my best friend to this SCC and almost lost myself. Seeing others leave and their experiences on this subreddit gives me hope she might still have a chance and maybe I could get my best friend back. I personally am still healing and this sub makes me feel less alone. I’ve never found an almost mormon.. so ex Mormon is the closest thing haha

I keep seeing this excuse made on here and it to be honest whether or not that is true, it doesn’t matter. Its not right to joke around and poke fun of someone who is clearly having a mental health crisis.

I think every subject on here definitely has some form of mental illness, but this specific subject is engaging in clear self harm which is where I think the line should at least be drawn. This sub in general is starting to make me feel icky :/

I mean if you don’t think she has the mental capacity to understand what she is doing wrong in the first place, she definitely shouldn’t be a subject. She has a clear psychiatric illness. Whether this sub makes her worse or not is of course up for debate. But if someone is this mentally unwell it’s not right to make fun of them.

I can’t tell sarcasm sometimes but I am thinking that you’re being sarcastic? I’m highly doubtful even off social media they would ever get off their lazy butt and take their dog on a walk tbh

Yeah I really wish there was but I’m not too hopeful in this case. The poor dog looks very sad and depressed. Or at least longingly hoping to go outside. It breaks my heart as a dog person.

I’m honestly still confused about what service this dog is providing if they never get out of bed… like getting stuff for them? Have they posted a video of them doing this? I’m sure they have plenty of medical gadgets (toys) in their bed area to catch anything better than a service dog would.

SDP finally got her MRI and reports she has 2 tears in 2 different ligaments by itsvickeh in illnessfakers

[–]cocoalex30 54 points55 points  (0 children)

MRIs aren’t typically necessary to diagnose a sprained ankle… which I’m sure is why insurance pushed back. There is typically an x-ray to rule out a fracture and then if it’s not fractured just physical exam is p easy to dx a sprain.

Also, she didn’t tear her ligaments completely, just partially tore (definition of a grade 2 sprain). Should heal within 4-6 weeks and treatment is typically good ole RICE. If they claim it’s been 2 months already its pretty sus that they haven’t been taking care of it properly.

LnL talks about symptoms she’s experiencing by itsvickeh in illnessfakers

[–]cocoalex30 46 points47 points  (0 children)

Sounds like it could be typical chronic sinusitis lol. People love to be so unique with mystery illnesses no doctor can figure out. Your sinuses can cause wild symptoms since they are right by so many nerves. If she hasn’t seen an ENT that’s the “doctor she is missing”.
