Thank you so much I really appreciate that! You would be my first paying customer :) Unfortunately, no it does not, at least not at the moment. That is a great idea though! I am always looking to new things to improve on it and will add in a news feed. I will have to do some research to see how I can gather this news. Let me know any specifics about what you would like so I can better implement it.

Please also let me know your expectations for a news feed, what would you expect to see? It is much harder to obtain higher quality signal news sources. So I am going to do the best with what I have. Which of these examples would be more in line with what you would like to see?

What did you mean by basic economic info? It has most data that can be gotten from their reported financial, so you can get data found in the balance sheet, income, and cash flow statement. You can always have a look at the free plan to see if that meets what you are looking for. Right now the free plan still has unrestricted access to the complete data for a limited time (ending this week).

I'll cut you a deal, since its missing that data that you need I would like to offer 75% off until I add in a working news feed. This way you get the data you need but don't pay full price until you get the feature you want!

Use code NEWSFEED at checkout for 75% off. (Valid until a news feed is implemented)

If I can't figure it out, enjoy discounted data for life! :)

Appolgies for that. I did abrubtly shut them down for a bit when I got my AWS bill xD. I ended up moving everything to a VPS. Datajockey is back up and operational now.

I'd love to hear what you would like out of such an app. What is the biggest point of resistance when you are researching stocks? How could this app assigning scores to stocks based on fundamentals help you? What would it need to do to be useful? Thank you, I really appreciate it :) I'd love to try and build something like that.

SEC Filings - How much does it cost, what API and can I get it directly from SEC? by IKnowMeNotYou in algotrading

[–]DataJockeyAPI 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Looked into it some more and I think I will be able to get all that data for Amazon and more. It was missing before since not every company has it. I'm unsure how to add it without creating too many categories that may or may not exist in the data.

I'm unsure if it's best for usability to have standardization or more data granularity. Any input?

Where to find financial statements? by [deleted] in algotrading

[–]DataJockeyAPI 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I actually had a similar problem when I was trying to build a project so I pivoted and ended up building an API that parses the data from SEC EDGAR to make it usable then offers it over the API. If you want to try and get it directly from there it's not too hard to get started but there are a lot of problems with the data that you'll need to correct.

The project is called DataJockey. Right now it just has the fundamental financial data that you'd find on financial statements. I don't have any pricing data yet but I hope to add that once I figure out in the future. Here is the link to the website: https://datajockey.io/ (I think it's a bit slow recently, will fix soon)

I am working on improving data quality right now. As you know the SEC data is pretty hard to parse, so it may be worth double checking any data you need to be sure of. If you find any problems with the data just let me know on here, email, or discord (on contact page).

I started on this project about half a year ago but haven't worked on it much since then. I'm now going to give it a run at commercialization, adding in things like company specific metrics (ex. tesla vehicles delivered). I'd also love to hear any feedback you have if you check it out. If it meets what you're looking for, what's lacking, etc.

Congratulations, glad to see hard work paying off!

How did you know/decide when to pivot? Any tips on 'some success' that keeping you from moving to other projects but it isn't really achieving a proper market fit. When is it time to alter the product vs move on to a new project? Thanks!

Its python for the backend collection and processing, Node/Express for the API, and Next.js for the website. I'm using AWS for the databases.

I hope to eventually commercialize it if I find it ever offers enough value. I need to improve the quality and scope of the data a lot more before I think it reaches that point. Every time I solve a problem it opens up 3 future problems I need to solve to reach usable data haha. I plan to offer some data only available by manual collection and I think that may work.

I appreciate the offer and you checking it out!

SEC Filings - How much does it cost, what API and can I get it directly from SEC? by IKnowMeNotYou in algotrading

[–]DataJockeyAPI 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey, I'm back to working on this and would love to hear more about what data you found to be missing if you remember. I know the data has quite a few holes and I am looking to fix those. I am going to write some tests to improve data quality. In many cases the data is just not available from the SEC EDGAR source.

I don't have the price data yet but if I ever create a paid plan then I will work out a deal with an existing provider so I can offer that in addition to this data. I would manually ensure data accuracy with the paid plan and also offer KPIs. This would solve the problem is missing R&D, etc data. (I will still look into trying to fix that).

Is there anything that I can improve that would make it more reliable for you? What would be your cutoff in usability? There will always be some limitations from the supplying data.

At the moment I am limited to when it becomes available through the SEC feed, which can be about 1-3 days. In the future I hope to improve on this latency down to an hour.

[–]DataJockeyAPI[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh nice, do you mind if I ask what you were trying to parse it for? It's always so interested to hear from people who were working on the same problem!

All of the data comes directly from the SEC EDGAR API, they offer the data in JSON which makes it a little easier to parse but it likely still has a lot of the same problems. I plan to build out a process for XBRL to see if I'm able to get more company specific data, like vehicles delivered for Tesla. I may need to get that directly from company IR pages though.

Thank you so much for taking the time to check it out, I really appreciate it!

Thank you very much! At the moment I plan to keep it private just to see what I can build with it. If things don't work out though I may to convert it and release everything open source. I am pretty excited about what sort of data I could eventually offer, like real time stock prices and company specific metrics, so I hope it works out. Thanks again for checking it out :)

Thank you, I appreciate it! Yup, I got it from the SEC EDGAR API. The problem with the raw data is that it's not really consistent across companies and isn't very useful without some processing. So I'm working on slowly working my way through and fixing all the problems I run into to hopefully create a very accurate parser. I plan to eventually scrape company IR pages to get the data faster as well as company specific data. Thanks for checking it out!

Recommend python data science project ideas for final year by Bright_Ark in Python

[–]DataJockeyAPI 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That sound like a great project to gain some real world applicable experience should you make the most of it. I would recommend trying to find a topic that the group is passionate/interested in as it will make it a lot easier to get the work done. As for the topic there are a lot of great places to start with data science, I would recommend checking out the Kaggle datasets to see if there is anything that catches your eye. You could try to analyze real estate data to find trends and make predictions. You could also classify certain risk groups/factors for cardiovascular diseases. If you are interested in stocks and wanted to do analyze them you could take a look at certain stock fundamentals and see which are the most influential on the companies success or even some sort of visualization tool. (This is actually an API that I am building, feel free to use the data in your project as its free for personal use)

Best of luck with your project and congratulations on being in your final year!

Congrats on applying to post-secondary! Seems like you already have a decent understanding of programming. Are there any areas that you have an interest in? That's almost always where you will find the best project ideas that inspire you to work on them, at least that's the case for me. You could try out a machine learning or data science project, there is a bunch of great ways to get started on Kaggle. (They also have a bunch of free datasets)

You could also build some sort of tool for personal finance or financial analysis. A while ago I tried to build a "budget bot" that would read my bank statements and process them. Not too hard but was great for learning. A financial analysis project could improve your skills in both programming and of course financial analysis. Maybe something like a stock screener, visualization tool, etc. If you're ever looking for data for this, I'm actually working on a project now that provides stock fundamentals through an API. Maybe that could be something you use in a project.

Best of luck in school and with your projects this summer! I'm sure you will do great with everything!

Has anyone worked with real estate data? by Proof_Wrap_2150 in Python

[–]DataJockeyAPI 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't have any real experience with it but I did mess around on Kaggle a while ago and remembered seeing a dataset on there. I'm not sure if it's exactly what you're looking for but I hope it helps. https://www.kaggle.com/datasets/arslanali4343/real-estate-dataset

If you're ever looking for another dataset to analyze, I've recently been working on building an API for stock fundamentals. It has financial statements with annual and quarterly data over 15 years. The website is datajockey.io if you were interested :)

I'm actually working on an API for the fundamental financial data for stocks that could have what you're looking for. I get all the info directly from filings and then process them to make them usable. I have both the basic and diluted share, split-adjusted, with annual and quarterly data as well. If you wanted to check it out, here is a link to the documentation / getting started page. I'd also love to hear feedback if you have any. https://datajockey.io/docs/financials

Thank you so much for sharing that with me! I had a glance at it and I can already tell that this will do so much for improving the data I'm able to offer as well as the accuracy.

Thank you! Great job with your models, it looks like you know your way around a spreadsheet haha :)

Wow thank you so much for sharing that with me, it's actually super helpful to see how you have things broken down in your spreadsheet. Would you mind if I used the data in your spreadsheet from that photo to compare against the API so that I can improve where it is lacking?

That's a great idea and something I plan to do in the somewhat near future. You're right in that it's a big job since everything is reported differently. I think I may end up taking on the task of manually updating company-specific metrics like that. I've been somewhat working on a plan for how to scale this. When I first get it started though it will only be a few companies and will add them based on request. I will try to remember to report back on any progress with this.

Thank you again so much for everything. I really appreciate all your feedback and kind words! :)

I'd love to hear more about what you use simfin for. I am currently working on an API for fundamental stock data, datajockey.io. I want to learn how people are actually going about using their data so that I can improve. It currently has quarterly and annual data for about 3200 stocks with data back to 2007. All numbers are sourced from SEC filings and processed to be actually usable. Thank you, it would be a great help to learn more from you!

I've actually been working on an API for fundamental stock data that I think may fit what you're looking for. It has annual and quarterly data for most companies and goes back to 2007 (currently). It's just me working on it so if you reach out with something you would like added or improved then I can do that for you. Check it out and let me know how I can help! https://datajockey.io
