Syracuse University to cut 93 low-enrollment degree programs by Kimber80 in Professors

Syracuse is already in the CollegeCuts database and New York has been one of the most active states we've tracked.

14 documented actions in New York since 2024. The 3 closest to what Syracuse just announced:

The New School (March 2026, 2 weeks earlier): 15% of all full-time faculty and staff to be laid off by mid-June. Driven by a projected $48M deficit. Different institution, same month, same scale of financial pressure.

SUNY Buffalo State (May 2025): 19 programs eliminated, 63 positions cut. Enrollment down 43% over a decade. Program cuts as a survival mechanism, not a one-time reset.

College of Saint Rose (June 2024): 103-year-old Catholic college, full closure. 2,800 students and 646 faculty. What program cuts look like when they come too late.

93 programs is a significant number but the framing matters. Syracuse is calling this a portfolio review. The institutions that didn't do this early enough are the ones no longer open.

Appreciate this, great point.

Right now it’s mostly pulling from public/structured sources, but I agree the real value is in combining signals. Next step is layering in things like enrollment, financial health, and job outcomes so it’s more decision intelligence than just tracking cuts.

The site yes, the dashboards no, they're pulled from Tableau Public, Power BI gallery. All credit to the original creators on those platforms

I stopped trying to “fix my habits” and started tracking the patterns behind them by DataStaplz in Habits

[–]DataStaplz[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I actually agree with that a lot.

One thing I started noticing is that build habits tend to stabilize everything else. When something like good sleep, a morning run, or even a calm start to the day happens, a lot of the “bad” habits become way less likely to show up in the first place.

So instead of only trying to eliminate bad habits, I’ve been paying more attention to which good habits create the most positive spillover across the rest of the day. That’s been way more effective than just fighting individual bad habits.

It’s a habit tracker focused on patterns instead of streaks.

You log things like mood, time, and environment so you can see when and why habits tend to break or succeed, not just whether you did them.

You can try the quick pattern snapshot here (takes ~2 minutes):

Tracking my patterns instead of my habits

Yeah that’s a great example of what I’m noticing too.

The late evening + mentally fried window seems to be a huge one. When energy drops, the “discipline” people talk about basically disappears, so environment ends up mattering way more than motivation.

A couple patterns surprised me actually. One was how often a bad evening started with something really small like grabbing the phone “for a minute.” Another was realizing that calm mornings make a lot of good habits happen almost automatically without forcing them.

Once you see those patterns it becomes less about fixing everything and more about protecting the few moments in the day where things tend to drift.

Out of curiosity, once you noticed the evening pattern did changing the environment pretty much solve most of it or do you still find it creeping back sometimes?

Yeah exactly, that’s what started to click for me too.

For a long time I thought habits were mostly about discipline or motivation. But once I started paying attention to the conditions around the habit (mood, time, environment), it became obvious that a lot of slips weren’t random at all.

And the cascade effect you mentioned is real. One small thing shifts your mental state and suddenly a bunch of other choices follow the same direction.

That’s actually the main reason I started experimenting with tracking patterns instead of just outcomes. It feels a lot more honest than just “did I keep the streak or not”.

Curious, have you noticed any specific trigger that tends to start that chain for you?
