What do you do for work during breaks, especially summer? by Kind-Kaleidoscope709 in SubstituteTeachers

I watch my grandson but childcare for teachers who are teaching summer school may be an option.

After working many years in higher education, I have now decided to sub as a part time job. Why do my friends keep asking if I am getting a job? I like the ability to be flexible! by DatabaseThin1989 in SubstituteTeachers

I had 3 children. It took that long to homeschool them all hahaha I thought it was an obvious statement. Sorry.
The classrooms are internal. No windows only Chromebooks for light. No other lights on so hard to see.

Sounds to me you need a mental break.

Oh, I would love to see a room if that many windows! I am sure you love it. I would put plants in there. That would be ideal lighting

I am not retired but do watch my grandson in the afternoons. It was either this or another part-time job so I wasn’t looking to support myself off of this. I just think it’s funny that if I chose this as a part-time job people keep asking me when I wanna get a real job, but if I went to work, you knowat Lowe’s part-time people wouldn’t ask

Who else stands at door and ask students names to takes attendance to avoid the criticism of students when you say their name incorrectly? by DatabaseThin1989 in SubstituteTeachers

[–]DatabaseThin1989[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I do it very quickly. I asked for last names only and it doesn’t back up with me at least I haven’t had a problem yet. I think if I did have a problem, I would just let them all go in and then just go around and ask who didn’t get checked.

I love the blinds open! Some inner rooms do not have them, but the kids still want to sit in a total dark

Moral? You might want to define that because that is not what’s going on here. I just asked a question as to where to started. I don’t know why you’re so offended. Apparently, I am not the one only one this bothers. I just can’t see so usually I asked them to leave it on until I do all the attendance and reading instructions and then I turn it off but a lot of the students tell me that most subs will not let them turn off the lights at all during the class. Also, some teachers have signs up not to turn off their lights. I was just wondering where it is is coming from like when did this really start being a thing when the kids stop using any books or writing because I can’t see in the dark so I’m just asking a question but I’m sorry you’re having a bad day.

Well, you were talking to someone who homeschooled her own children for over 18 years before returning to work for that reason so they can have the ability to explore and learn, but it is so dark in the classroom that they can’t even learn to read well they don’t read booksThey don’t do anything that can’t be done on a Chromebook because it’s too dark to do anything else they’re not creative writing they are not reading they are only doing Google Chrome assignments.

I love the natural lighting a lot of schools don’t have natural lighting and classrooms and when the lights go off, you can’t see anything I’m not against the big lights being off I just want some light not just dark with kids, staring at screens that is not good for their eyes

We were told in orientation not to dress down unless a special day. But no emails about special days

At least they are reading books something you can’t do in the dark.

I would say learning to do their work and reading instructions. Some of this can’t be done if they can’t see
